no insurance

Nov 3, 2009 6:49 AM
if I read right, a seller can't recomend insurance to a buyer to insure their purchase. I think that is wrong of ebay to drop that option.as a seller we can't rely on mail service to deliver.I've not only lost my merchadise, but had to give refunds for merchadise lost in mail. How as a seller are we to know that the buyer did recieve item then claim not to just to get money back? most of the time no feedback is left. I'm not saying that everyone is dishonest but in this day of age there are plenty of people that think of ways to get around the system and get things for free... money is tight for everyone.I am not a pwer seller.I just dabble but what little money I do make here use to be fun.just short of offering no refunds at all which i don't think is right either I don't know what else to do to protect my money.

No you can not "recommend" insurance, but why would you want too, since NO buyer should ever even consider paying for it if the choice is left up to them, considering that insurance does not do one single them to protect them.

What you can do when you feel it's necessary, is "force" the buyer to pay for the insurance the you need to protect you, by including the cost of insurance in the shipping price or listing price of the item.

"How as a seller are we to know that the buyer did recieve item then claim not to just to get money back?"

That has nothing to do with insurance, that's what Delivery Confirmation is for and you should have always been getting DC on every package you have ever sent. If you had insurance, without DC, the buyer could STILL have always made a false non-delivery claim and won.

"just short of offering no refunds at all"

Which is pretty much a moot point, since Paypal will ALWAYS force a refund for items damaged or not received, or not as described; so not offering refunds will do absolutely nothing to protect you.

First off, the sellers are to provide insurance. They buy it to insure it doesn't get lost or broken. Buyers no longer obligated to buy insurance. Really it never was. I always thought I had to have it, but later found that the seller benefits from that.
Second, are you sending packages with "signature confirmation". That will help tremendously. It's worth every cent.

Also, whether sellers state no refund or not, you are proctected under Paypal. If you received it broken or not at all, you can file a dispute.(SNAD) You have 45 days to file the SNAD. Do not wait. It has to be done before your 45 day window expires.

"First off, the sellers are to provide insurance."

Okay, I agree with everything else you said, but that part is not quite accurate. Sellers never have to purchase insurance, and on items where they feel the need to have the insurance they are perfectly within their rights to add the cost into the shipping costs(or listing cost) and charge it to the buyer, as Insurance IS a legitimate part of the shipping costs.

And buyers ARE obligated to buy it, If(and only if) it's factored in correctly.

We know because we use Delivery Confirmation.

I don't know what else to do to protect my money.

Start by reading the PayPal User Agreement. Specifically, the Seller Protection Policy and Buyer Protection Policy.

Right, so that's why you can insure, if you want, to protect yourself. Buyers don't need insurance. Their credit card and/or PayPal protect them.

As a seller you can protect yourself from false item not received claims by using delivery confirmation. You protect yourself from lost or damaged mail by buying insurance of just planning absorbing a few losses.

Your wrong, sorry.

New minimum standards for all sellers: Starting in October, there will be a new minimum standard for all eBay sellers based on the number of low DSRs (1s and 2s) received. The minimum standard will be stricter in April, 2010.
A new Selling Practices policy will define guidelines for professionalism and accuracy in all aspects of listings and transactions.
Optional buyer charges for shipping insurance will no longer be allowed. Sellers can still buy shipping insurance and add the cost to the item or shipping price.

factored in correctly.

No, nothing I said is wrong, and the policy you quoted proves it. Read the last line again:

"Sellers can still buy shipping insurance and add the cost to the item or shipping price."

This is the same as "requiring" insurance, buyers never have the right to negotiate shipping costs, so again, they are "obligated" to pay the insurance IF(and only if) it's correctly factored into the listing or shipping price.

I understand what your saying. I 'm saying it's hidden in the shipping or the listing. I don't how, if the insurance is not listed, how the seller will to get remberst. If it's not mentioned anywhere, I really don't know how the seller will be able to claim damage, lost what ever. Now with Paypal, it's a different story.

"Sellers can still buy shipping insurance and add the cost to the item or shipping price."

I still see listings where the statement of insurance is mentioned.

This is the same as "requiring" insurance, buyers never have the right to negotiate shipping costs, so again, they are "obligated" to pay the insurance IF(and only if) it's correctly factored into the listing or shipping price.

Whatever. I don;t see that anywhere. I just a pulled this sentence from the notifications. There's much more to it. You can not list insurance. Your misleading the buyer thinking if something does happen , the buyer is SOL. It's the sellers choice, not the buyer. Whether the buyer wants insurance or not, the buyer is covered. If something happens, damage, lost it is the sellers lose. How are you going place a claim when insurance isn't posted anywhere? In the past, buyers requested insurance and it was not hidden in shipping or list price. That is the point I'm trying to make. I must have misunderstood you.

One other thing. Seller puts a starting bid on the auction as .99. We know it's (insurance) hidden there. Also, if placing the insurance in shipping, you might break the rule of excessive shipping amounts. Right?

wrong, you are just charging the fee that's in the cost to ship. so it's acceptible to charge for that cost in shipping.

We may walk a different path , but may be headed to the same place. So walk with me awhile when our paths cross. let's ease each other's load.

How are you going place a claim when insurance isn't posted anywhere?

Well I've been self insuring for 9 years so I will request a photo/return & issue a refund/replace. If tracking shows no delivery I either send a replacement or refund.

It's not rocket science.
