A question about the returns I offer to buyers...

A question about the returns I offer to buyers...
Jul 26, 2012 07:23 PM

I sold an item to a person, they changed their mind once they received it and would like to return it.  I, of course, offer returns and state my policy in my listings.

My policy is that if it is defective/wrong I of course pay the return shipping and issue a full refund.

But my policy also states that if they simply change their mind, they are responsible for shipping both ways.

Here is where the problem comes in.  I offer free shipping on all of my items, but of course, as we all know, that price is built into the selling price.

Common sense would say that I let the buyer know I will issue them a refund minus the cost it charged me to ship it to them originally.  Buyers are usually fine with this.  BUT, if I do this, I cannot open a "Cancel Transaction Request" through Ebay to cancel the transaction...please correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't found a way to do that.

So if that is the case, I am also out the Final Value Fee.

Feedback is much appreciated!

For what its worth I've spoken to eBay CS on 6 different occasions (figuring that each rep will have a different answer) on what the definition of MONEY BACK as shown on Return Policies is. All 6 reps said it meant all money that the buyer paid. The MONEY BACK would be the combined total of item price and shipping. Given that definition it wouldn't matter if you had free shipping or not.

Side note on your Return Policy Details. You are not allowed to select the 14 day return option and then contradict it with 7 days to return. eBay addressed what could or could not be put in the Return Policy Details in their 2012 Fall Update Discussion. Go to:

Hi, I have considered this problem too when I offer free shipping. Its a risk you have to take whenever free shipping is offered.Maybe the best way to deal with this problem in the future, is to not offer free shipping anymore.By the way, you look beautiful in your listing photo :) Have a nice day!
