Question about item damaged in mail
May 15, 2012 08:45 PM

I recently made my first ebay purchase. A computer. It was damaged in the mail and the seller told me he would not only give me a refund but he didnt want the computer back. I think it's just the mobo that was damaged so i was going to try and replace it but i was told that i "might" have to give over the damaged computer to the usps.

Does anyone know if this is the case and under what circumstances i would be required to give up the item? It's really a nice item aside from the mobo not working.

You might want to contact ebay and see if you can get it repaired from a reputable pc shop and get reimbursed from the seller for it. If ebay says this is OK get it in an email so your covered.

Other than that you have two options. 1) Keep it and fix it on your own. 2) Open a SNAD case and request to return to make sure you are reimbursed for shipping both ways. You should not be out any money as the item is not as described due to it not working. Make sure to send it back Signature Delivery Confirmation to make sure there is no funny business while returning it.

If seller is willing to give you a full refund and does not want the item returned; it's yours to dispose of. Did the package come via USPS and if so, was it insured? If so, seller may file a claim against USPS for reimbursement, in which case, you may have to give the item back to USPS. If there was no insurance, once again, the item is yours. If it was shipped via FedEx or UPS, and there was no seperate insurance on the item, they only insure the item up to 100 dollars and I don't know if they have a policy of the recipient having to give the item back to them or not. You could call your local FedEx/UPS and ask them about their policies if that is the route the seller delivered the item to you.
