Best Match Test in 5 Categories

Jan 16, 2008 3:42 PM
We’ve been working to improve how Best Match works to enhance the buying experience. We wanted to let you know that beginning today, Best Match will be tested in the following five categories:
  • Consumer Electronics
  • Computers & Networking
  • Cameras & Photos
  • Cell Phones & PDAs
  • Toys and Hobbies
We’ve provided FAQs below in anticipation of the questions you may have about the enhanced Best Match functionality. We also encourage you to post additional questions to this thread.

Regards,
The Finding Team

Question 1: What is "Best Match"?

Answer: "Best Match" is a new sort feature that gives buyers another way to organize their search results, helping them more quickly find what they are looking for.

Question 2: How does "Best Match" work?

Answer: When "Best Match" is selected, each listing's Best Match score is calculated using a number of factors, and is tailored to each buying situation. Along with the listing keywords and other information, one of most important elements in this calculation is the historical buyer behavior on the site for similar searches. One thing to note: Best Match scores are only used to sort listings, and won’t be shown on the site.

Question 3: How do I change the sort back to “Time: Ending Soonest”?

Answer: You can simply change the sort by selecting your preferred sort option from the “Sort by” dropdown menu in the upper right corner of Search Results. You can also customize the sort options from “Customize Display” if you want your preferred sort option to be the default option.

Question 4: I don’t see my item in the Best Match sort - why not?

Answer: The "Best Match" sort doesn’t change which items get returned for a particular search - it just changes the order of the items themselves. If your item isn’t appearing at all, please check this page: 'How can I find it'.

Question 5 (for eBay Developers): How do API users take advantage of the "Best Match" sort option?

Answer: The "Best Match" sort option includes additions to the eBay unified schema API. The GetSearchResults and GetCategoryListings calls will enable you to specify that the best matches are returned first.

Best Match Test in 5 Categories

Hi julie_lavee@ebay.com

Best Match was set the default sort in browse for the following five categories as of around January 7:

Collectibles
Consumer Electronics
Cameras & Photo
Computer & Networking
Toys & Hobbies

So now if a person does a search in these 5 categories, they will get Best Match sort (with the ability to change to another sort), unless they have used the Customize Display function to set their preference, correct?

Consumer Electronics
Computers & Networking
Cameras & Photos
Cell Phones & PDAs
Toys and Hobbies

And is it also correct that if a person searches for Buy It Nows only, they will get Best Match? That became effective last week, I believe. Is the Finding Team aware that the Customize Display preference setting does not override that default, and was that intentional? And if so, why?

Welcome Julie,
I guess that you didn't take a quick look at all of the threads on the search board here commenting on best match prior to posting this. Perhaps you could tack it to the top?
I'm sure there will be other regulars along soon to comment on how best match has already impacted their ebay experience.

Hasn't the "historical buyer behavior" on the EBay Express site shown that buyers DO NOT like best match? Why the rush to bring this as the default search site wide? An option maybe, not a default.

julie -

i know you mean well BUT best match does not work!
the follow is clear & convincing evidence that any court would accept as proof that it doesn't work:

1) 10% drop in ytd listings
2) a huge drop in inactive members ytd
3) stock is at it's lowest point since 2004 & 2000
4) search results include everything but the kitchen sink
5) amazon beat ebay in holiday visitors by 1/4 million
6) 63 pages of complaints on just 1 search thread alone
7) sellers are leaving due to NO SALES
8) buyers are leaving because they can't find IT

GUINEA PIG TESTS - OPT OUT links are buried at the bottom of a page, don't work, or nonexistent. many members get opted back in too. why not put opt out links at the TOP of each page in clear view?

please advise donahoe that the entire universe uses KEYWORD SEARCHES and that no BUYER wants to be told what to buy because their choices have been preselected by someone other than themselves. this is rude too!

Hi beachgal707

I would agree that eBay's test/NSE/Playground search may have affected the things you detailed, and it is what people have complained about for the last 6 months - but the test/NSE/Playground is NOT Best Match.

Mind, I'm not in favor of either of them.

Does that mean you have taken the best match OFF as a default in the original 5 categories?

I have no way of checking because I'm one of those stuck in best match for everything.

If collectibles has been freed from the insanity I can safely list again. If not, I'll just sit back and watch as the despair spreads.

What is/was the rationale (and I use that term very loosely) behind Best Match in Collectibles?

How could a rare or OOAK item ever be found and sold?

Hi, The long and short of your test is that it sucks. Why don't you leave things alone when they are working. If you want to do something constructive add spell check to listings, let feed back remarks have more spaces, go back to using when you reach the bottom of a search you hit go back to the top box so you can start down the next set of listings with out scrolling your way to the top. This was a great feature took away. AND FINALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE DEAD BEATS AND SCAMMERS . wildturkeyhunter

I haven't been able to get rid of the best match sort. I make a change in the drop down menu and it still reverts back to best match. I don't like best match at all.

Same thing to report here - best match is NOT what I have checked in my settings, but that is what shows up, whether I try to change it or not. ALSO, this is for every category - not just the five listed. I understand that some people may like it this way, but I find it a TOTAL PAIN.

Please please please, someone UNDO THIS HORRID THING!!!

And, yes, I have reported it.

Your best match test is the worst. It is affecting more catagories than you have listed and your custom display drop down menu doesn't fix the problem. Get rid of it. I want my previous method of searching restored. You people keep tinker with things and have no common sense on what you are doing to the system. The only thing you create is frustration. wildturkeyhunter

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE RESOUNDING REMARKS!! THIS IS THE WORST THING EBAY HAS DONE AND I'VE NO DOUBT THAT SALES HAVE BEEN LOST BECAUSE OF THIS RIDICULOUS FEATURE...PUT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS!! BEST MATCH HAS STOPPED ME FROM BUYING AS MUCH AS I WOULD AND FROM SELLING FOR FEAR OF NO~ONE BEING ABLE TO FIND MY ITEMS WITHOUT LOOKING THROUGH THOUSANDS OF LISTINGS. THERE ARE NO SEARCH OPTIONS ANYMORE...IT'S STUCK IN BEST MATCH MODE!!!!
