***Coming Soon: More Search Expansions***

Mar 14, 2005 3:25 PM
Late last year, we added search expansions in several Business & Industrial categories to help buyers find more of the items they're interested in. Starting this week, we’re going to add more expansions to other areas of the site, gradually increasing over the next few months.

What Are Search Expansions?

Many buyers who aren’t as familiar with searching on eBay will often type in a general description of what they are looking for into the search box (for instance, action figure). When this happens, the results they get are often only a portion of the relevant listings, because many of them will not have action figure in the title.

With search expansions, when someone uses the search box to find a particular type of item, we’ll display those listings that have the keyword in the title as usual, but we’ll also show all items in a relevant category that we’ve mapped to the keyword. So, for instance, in our example the search results would show all items with action figure in the title, as well as all items in the Action Figures category. Or, if the buyer types in Superman action figure, we’ll show all listings with Superman action figure in the title, as well as all listings with Superman in the title that are in the Action Figures category.

If you don’t want to have the expanded results shown, simply use quotation marks around any single keyword in your search terms (for example: “Superman” action figure). To let us know your thoughts on these changes, please comment below on this thread.

I don't think this is a good idea. There are already too many items that come up when someone is searching for what they want, this will only add to that and make it even more overwhelming with the possibility of what a person is REALLY looking for getting lost in items they don't want and having them simply give up. Instead of automatically adding items to a search, why don't you have a red notation come up instructing the person to add more words to define that search or a link they can click on with a brief search tutorial. Unless you specifically tell people to put words in quotes, they are not going to know this can help them to eliminate unrelated results. Why would ebay want to ADD more results to an already clogged search results system! As a seller I already have a hard enough time getting my items found when search is exact let alone being lost in items simply because they are in a category and have the same word.

"So, for instance, in our example the search results would show all items with action figure in the title, as well as all items in the Action Figures category."

So basically you are saying that buyers searching by keyword will be directed to the entire listings in the catagory that the keywords pertain to?

In this case keywords are useless. It sounds like another attempt to force buyers to use the product finder only to
find things. I know my buyers are not using it.

I think it will both be positive and negative! I search for all kinds of products all the time on ebay and it is really frustrating when I cannot find what I am looking for. This is usualy due to the listing fees and the cost of each category and that the seller wants to save as much money as possible. Some times I just cannot find what I am looking for due to the fact that so many items will apear and I have to browse for hours to find the exact thing I am looking for.
I think the better the description from the seller the easier it will be for buyers to find what they want! It's all about promoting your items for sale! If sellers did that the search expansions wouldn't be that nescesary!

Re: ***Coming Soon: More Search Expansions***

I am thinking Search Expansion is a very good thing.

I know myself as a Buyer when I am searching for something I type in my key words in the search box.....seldom do I start searching by trying to figure out what category I should be looking in.

Once my key word shows many items then I start narrowing down the list by either using more and more 'search words' and at some point I might click on a specific category. I do not choose to use category first because as a Seller, I know sometimes it may be very difficult to try and choose a category and it is too expensive to list with 2 categories and many times an item will be listed in the wrong category due to lack of knowing which one to choose or through error of forgetting to change category.

As a Seller....this will be very helpful to me with the type of item I usually list as I need as much space for my title as possible and now I am thinking I will be able to eliminate some words to make room for other important descriptive words.

I usually sell postcards.....I list in one category (postcards) but many of the postcards have very nice and sought after collectible postmarks or stamps.....but I have been unable to list properly to help the Buyer find their little 'treasure'.....

...The reason it is difficult for me to list these little postcard treasures properly is because I would have to pay second photo fee (back of postcard scan) and list in 2 categories (postcards and some stamp or postal history category) which would end-up with way to high listing fee for these low $ value items....but these little postcard 'treasures' are of great 'historical value' and.....

..... anything that eBay could do to help these little historical beauties find their proper home would be GREAT........

So, at first glance and thought I believe if Search Expansion is set-up properly by eBay for many different scenarios.... this could be a very excellent opportunity for Sellers, Buyers and eBay......

I am interested in what others have to say.

Cheers!
p.s. sorry for mistakes as I didn't have time to re-read

I applaud you for your diligent efforts in this arena. There can't be a more important issue than the correct avenue of disposal or use of this equipment. My hat to you and yours. Keep up the great work.

I'm most interested in how this change will affect items from stores coming up in searches. Store items now come up when less than 20 items show up from a regular search. It sounds like this change could wipe out many store items being found through the eBay search function.

Are store items going to be fully integrated into the search results? If not, as a storeowner I HATE this idea. It will result in store items being totally overwhelmed. What storeowners (me) pay for a store should dictate that our items come up equally in the mix of results.

How will the inexperienced buyer know to do all your complicated gyrations? What provision for explaining this, much more simply than you did here, will be made? Are you going to send everyone of the 2 billion eBay user id's an email?

The extension is probably a good thing for buyers but since you've been too cheap to do it up til now, why would anyone expect it now? THIS requires more thought and planning than your organization normally gives to things. Or did I miss that deadline already? Cause afterall you announced it today, it's probably going into effect tomorrow.

For god's sake, can't you guys plan discuss things openly with more lead time?

Why is everything rushed into production without any conversation with sellers or buyers?

No, no, no.

More clutter in search results, including items that don't match the search criteria.

Stores will suffer, as fewer and fewer searches have less than 20 matches (the threshold for any store items showing in basic search).

I can't recall anyone asking for this.

NO! Please do NOT mess with the search function again!

As a buyer, it has become difficult enough to sift through all the many listings that come up in a search as it is.

As a seller, I take the time and effort to make good use of my auction title space, and I will resent my items now becoming buried in a huge list of items from sellers who are not so creative or knowledgeable about effective keyword use.

Wasn't the last time you changed the search function overall something of a major disaster? Not only that, but can't eBay find better ways to spend our money? I read about, and experience, glitches of all sorts right here on these boards. Maybe you all should spend some time perusing the boards and taking heed to what needs to be worked on rather than dreaming up ways to fix what ain't broke.

The search function is fine now, just as it is. Please don't break one of the few things that still works around here.

Oh yes, let's not forget the impact this will have on Store items coming up in searches. Changes such as this will effectively obliterate most instances of Store items being included in searches.

Gee thanks, eBay - raise the eBay Stores fee and then downgrade the service. NOT a good move (but not unexpected considering eBay's usual, totally unnecessary, most likely to be catastrophic, half-baked ideas).

I doubt this will be a good idea for a buyer who is seeking a very specific item. It appears that eBay wants to present more and more items to a buyer despite the buyer wanting to search for specific items. This is another example of when eBay removed the ability to search for an ampersand (&). Now when I search for C&O items which are related to the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad, I get all kinds of useless garbage like every item that has a Certificate Of Authenticity as they usually have "C.O.A." in the title. The "C.O" portion meets the eBay search of "C&O" as eBay treats the ampersand as a wildcard. My search used to produce a couple of dozen hits. Now it produces over 1600 hits and I don't have time to sort through them all. It is so bad that I don't bother searching any more. I guess eBay thinks this is a good thing.

As a shop owner, I don't like this idea at all, for all the reasons above. Also, someone said they thought it might be a good idea for some of the sellers who can't stuff all their keywords into the title as it might allow them to eliminate some of them. Where's the benefit in this if your listing is returned in the new 'enhanced' search with those of a zillion other sellers whose irrelevant listings would never have shown next to yours under the previous search circumstance?

As a buyer, I think it's plain insulting. It says 'Your carefully crafted search string has returned many unexpected results because we've virtually re-written it for you as we believe you clearly don't know what you're doing.' Nice.

The only real benefit in this idea is that it brings the day closer when the site is indisputably exposed to the whole world as the mess it actually is - eBay might then be forced to spend it's resources cleaning it up instead of spending them on trashing the few things that are still functional around here. In which case, bring it on.

Overall, I'm very much against this idea and I don't think I'm in the minority. Regrettably, examples of eBay really listening to its users are few and far between.

***Coming Soon: More Search Expansions***

Ivan,

I am making the sincere suggestion that eBay spend its time and (obvious) excessive resources to implement a department solely devoted to getting rid of scam and otherwise inappropriate listings.

It's way past time for eBay to quit relying on its users to report scam artists and those who circumvent/ignore eBay policies. EBay needs to take more responsibility for what is listed on this site, rather than bombarding bidders with even more listings, many of which could very well be rip-offs.

Take a portion of your programming staff or, preferably, hire new ones considering the past performance of the current staff, and create a department devoted to helping to make this site a safe place to trade.

Choose to spend our dollars wisely and in such a manner as to help keep scammers away from our bidders and to be able to respond to reports of fraudulent/inappropriate listings. As it is, it's nearly useless to report scammers since it takes forever and a day for eBay to do anything about it - if they choose to do anything about it at all.

Screwing up the search function isn't going to accomplish anything but waste our money, cost us sales, and drive away potential bidders.
