Define your Search Preferences, Sort & Settings

Jun 10, 2009 1:01 PM
Hi Everyone -

As you know, Classic search was retired today.

We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some ways you can customize the new search to work for you.

Customized View: you can customize your search results so you can see what is important to you. You can set your default preferences to include the watch link or item's location under the item title in the search result. You can customize to see additional item information and seller information, as well as setting your default sort for both search and browse. Just start by clicking the Customized View link at the top of your search results pictured below.

Customize View 0309

For more detailed information on customizing your search results, please look at the post here: Link

Customize your Preferences the Left Navigation

Just click the link to customize preferences at the bottom of the Preferences section on the left side of the page. A window will pop up, and you can decide what you want to display on the left side of the page in the Preferences section:

Photobucket

Now you can specify the sellers that are returned in your Search results from the left side of the page. Just click the Specify Sellers link just above search preferences, check the box to "only show items from," select include or exclude from the drop down & enter the seller or sellers you would like to see or omit from your search results.

specify seller

Should you notice any issues with search, or ways you would like to see search improved, please post here and let us know your thoughts.

Best Regards,

Hi takman0

> Again, while I understand you can exclude specific sellers when yo do an advanced search, I have a saved search where there are 10 sellers (that was the limit) that I found liked to flood the listings with almost identical auctions (same pic, same description, maybe just a starting or BIN price a penny off). I have a saved search where those sellers are excluded, but when I do the next search from that screen (i.e. I search for "princess diamond", then I type in "marquise diamond"), THE EXCLUSIONS ARE GONE!!!

I know you don't want to go to the Advanced Search screen, but what if you use the Advanced Search page as your "home" and do ALL the searches from there? That is, after you do a search, then click on the tiny Advanced Search link and change the search words - does the excluded list remain on the next search, or is it wiped out?

I cant believe nobody has addressed this issue yet. I never had this problem until this new search was launched. How many people out there who dont probably even know about this forum are having the same problem. Hello MarniSue can you get back to us with why the problem is still there. Do you not understand that we can not search past the first page which means we can not buy anything. I am sure wddurango and i are not the only two that have this problem. If buyers are unable to buy things do you think they will stay. Absolutely unbelievable you would launch this mess with before things are fixed

I used to be able to search using autocomplete with searches i've used over time. It appears the "suggestions feature" change has eliminated that functionality from the browser. I don't want to spend time retyping my searches over and over from each page that comes up. Not everything used at Google or Amazon is suitable for eBay with all the different items and combinations of items for sale here. I'm like a lot of those preceding me I used to opt out but with that option gone i'll be spending less time on the site. Which i guess is not necessarily bad because i'll also be spending less money here.

Here's a problem I ran across in the new Search. If you go into US Coins and search the year 1995 you get some Brazilian crap that shows up. It doesn't matter if you search at the US Coins level or somewhere else such as Quarters , Dollars etc. It always comes up with the Brazilian crap. It doesn't seem to happen with any other year but I don't have time to try them all.

For MarniSue:

When you go into Link - that is, Buy > Coins & Paper Money > Coins: US

and do a search for 1995, the only 'result' is "Bonecos [IMPORT] (CD, 1998, Franz)"

The only tie-in that I can see is that the UPC is set to 1995. And I guess because it's a "Product" it's not looking at the rest of the database.

Hi Everyone -

Thanks so much for taking the time to post. I am going to do my best to address some of your concerns.

wddurango

How about letting us know when ebay will get the search to work past page one for many of us?

We are doing our best to get this fixed on the site as soon as possible. Some members have reported that if they change the number of items per page they are able to use the page links once again.

I will post back when I have confirmation that the solution has been rolled out to the site.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

I cannot get the size of the photos to change from small. I tried the little boxes at the bottom and there is no difference in the three sizes, they are all showing small photos and due to a suggestion as I posted this question, I went in to customize view and changed the size to large but the page once refreshed, still shows small photos.

To change the size of the photo you need to use the latter approach of changing your settings in customize view.

The difference between the small & large pictures is fairly subtle. Is it possible you are thinking of those photos which offer the "enlarge" option?

Here are a few screenshots so you can see the expected difference.

medium

large
Large Picture

An extra large picture is only available for those items where there is an enlarge icon.

If that is not what you are seeing, please email me, at MarniSue@ebay.com. Please use email as opposed to my messages.

Thanks!

Now, for instance in Sporting Goods, when I search "used" in the description only, I get thousands of returns. THOUSANDS! And many of them aren't used! They're NEW!

The new search expands to include those items where the seller has indicated in item specifics the condition of the item. If you search for used, you may get items that were titled Never Used and indicated as New in the item specifics.

If you want to turn off the expansions, you can use quotations around your words.

That said, we will investigate to make sure we are returning the appropriate items.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

postalmadness

I collect baseball cards and using the old search with -(xxxx) I could eliminate mostly everything I wasn't interested in,

The new search should support this query. When you have a moment, if you could post back with the URL, we will take a look.

everynineseconds

I notice that the first screenshot in your post includes "Opt out of the new search experience."

Where can I find that option on my search pages?

I apologize, I used an old screenshot from before June 10th. The Opt Out links are no longer available.

I will be back later or tomorrow to address more posts.

Thanks for your time,

MarniSue

Following up to amend my comments.
I do see the issue you described, where some New items are coming back in a search for used, and we will work on fixing it as soon as possible.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Back later or tomorrow,

Hi vincent2920,

This is happening because of our UPC mapping feature. When you input a UPC you go to one of our product pages. Unfortunately this particular product has a UPC of "1995" (I've never seen a product with a UPC like that. Who comes up with these numbers?! :) ). Technically it's not broken, but it's a bad user experience.

I'll talk to our engineering team to see if there's anything we can do to improve it.

Regards,
Matt

The new search results pages load too slowly. Old search was instantaneous whereas the new search takes 8 to 12 seconds using high speed DSL connection. Visited link colors are lost after a couple of hours with the new search, whereas they would retain the visited link color for however long the auction ran previously. Have history set to 15 days. Why would eBay drop the old search when the new one has not been refined and does not work properly?

This new "search" system is the worse idea eBay has ever implemented...Now to shove it down our throats? I want to "opt out" NOW!!! ...After all these years I am seriously considering leaving eBay...Would NOT recommend to anyone at this point...Can't find a damn thing...:( I HATE IT!!!!!

Vincent, this same "mapping" feature is the reason why the new search no longer supports searching completed listings by UPC. When you input a UPC and click "completed listings only," it still redirects you to the product page with active listings.

Do you know if this feature will be restored? It was a very valuable research tool for me.

Thank you.

Me - Again, while I understand you can exclude specific sellers when yo do an advanced search, I have a saved search where there are 10 sellers (that was the limit) that I found liked to flood the listings with almost identical auctions (same pic, same description, maybe just a starting or BIN price a penny off). I have a saved search where those sellers are excluded, but when I do the next search from that screen (i.e. I search for "princess diamond", then I type in "marquise diamond"), THE EXCLUSIONS ARE GONE!!!

Glenda says - I know you don't want to go to the Advanced Search screen, but what if you use the Advanced Search page as your "home" and do ALL the searches from there? That is, after you do a search, then click on the tiny Advanced Search link and change the search words - does the excluded list remain on the next search, or is it wiped out?

Me again - Hi, Glenda. The only problem with launching all my searches from one "home" advanced search page is that I have to go back to it after each search instead of changing the search words in the current screen. Going back to the "home" screen keeps the excluded sellers but basically doubles the screens since I'm constantly going back. It's still better than searching dozens more screens w/o excluding sellers though, so your suggestion is helpful and more so than Ebay is right now with this new search forced upon us.

P.S. In case I misunderstood and you didn't mean to go back but rather click on the "advanced search" on the current screen, it still has the effect of doubling the screens I'm hitting to do the same thing I used to before the "new improved search". Again, still better than not excluding these "flood the listings" type of sellers that I've excluded.
