I am totally NOT getting it!!!

Nov 5, 2009 4:47 PM
I've been a Seller (and buyer) on eBay for a decade now. I have been a PowerSeller for the past three years, never had a negative, have the latest little icon for Top-Rated Seller, DSR's are 4.9, 4.9, 5.0, and 5.0, blah, blah, blah.

In spite of all that, my sales have dropped nearly IN HALF during the last couple of months. For the first time in three years, my sales dipped below the minimum for PowerSeller. The icing on the cake came when my two top selling items, which I used to sell 4-5 per week, have now dropped to maybe 2-3 a month!! So I did a little search of my own and (gasp!) my items appeared on PAGE 15 of the search results!!! Tucked away neatly, with SEVERAL of my other listings way back where no one will ever see them!

I went to My eBay and did a "search visibility analysis" and got this nifty little chart that has percentages for such things as sales/impressions, unique click-through rate, and sales/unique click throughs.

Is this supposed to mean something to me??? I'm sorry, but I just don't have any more time to spend on eBay's ever changing policies. I wish I got paid for the countless HOURS that I had to put into changing all my listings manually to get rid of first the money order/personal checks, and then again, for the insurance option.

Now I'm going to have to take a college course to understand this impressions garbage? From what I can tell, the more a potential customer 'looks' at my item, maybe to purchase or compare, the further back eBay will boot it. But they decorate my ID all up with these cute little icons to tell customers to check out my stuff!

I then tried to "find my listings rank by keyword". I typed in the main two words used in my title. The response came back that "The keywords that you searched for didn't return your listing. Please enter keywords that match the title of your listing."

This is totally insane! For crying out loud, put it back to listings ending soonest and forget all the GARBAGE and analytical crud so we Sellers can list our items, have customers look at them and make a few sales!

I even received an email from a potential customer ASKING me if there was a way he could do a buy it now for my item! I gave him the listing number, but wanted to tell him to just go to PAGE 15!! This item has always appeared on page 1 or 2 before this last round of changes.

Am I missing something important or really easy to see that I'm just not figuring out? I'm totally at a loss here. For being what eBay ranks as such a pristine Seller, then why are they making it so HARD to sell something???

Ive noticed a drop in sales (basically in half) also...happened to me about 2 weeks ago and its frustrating. I have also typed my listing in the search engine and nothing UNLESS i specifically type 3 or more words which is stupid since most customers never get that specific. I dont know why they punish us sellers since WE drive the market and EBAY profits from us.

"search visibility analysis" is a crock because buyers can't find what they want and just give up.
I have found that just recently they are ignoring my title search words when searching "time: ending soonest". For example my search for…canvas tote bag…brings up 5,238 items (I did not click on to include stores) many are without the word canvas but all have the word tote.

When I do the same search using "canvas" tote bag I get 2,162. Ebay expected me to wade through over 3,000 extra listings. Canvas was my most important search word.

I know to use the parentheses when searching but many buyers do not. Even when they use Advanced search it looks to them like they are searching..All words any order, which is what is entered in the box. That particular search should read…Some words any order. Many don’t use the drop down to find ...Exact words, any order, and just give up. My husband stopped searching and buying on eBay because of this as I'm sure many other casual buyers have.

Welcome to the true meaning of "best match". The hand that fed you last month is now the hand that has you by the throat.

Maybe this explains why I haven't sold anything in 2 weeks. I had sales every week. Sold over $1500.00 since the beginning of September and then all of a sudden it's as though I don't have anything listed.

I searched for my more popular items and found them buried. No wonder I have very few hits and 1 lousy sale.

I even copied the exact title another seller was using, offered free shipping, did the BIN and still got nothing. This other seller is making 250.00 sales a day and I now have to take money out of savings to pay last month's Ebay bill!

I know what you are all saying. I have 5.0- 5.0-5.0-4.9 as well as the horse ribbon. Sales have dropped like a bomb. My sales on the river have picked up steam however.

At least now I can see I'm not crazy. Since those ribbons come up all 3 of my accounts sales have dropped. Not much we can do it's Ebays game and Ebays rules.

They did tell me on the phone they are getting lots of calls on this and they might change it back. I hope they have a brain and do it before the holidays are over.

I noticed the same thing with the 3 WORDS, last year it only took 2 WORDS to have my items pull up higher in the search.

They don't even respond to my emails on this either.

Oh well looks like if they don't fix it we'll all get plenty of rest during the holidays :(

YEP! I am a buyer only......if one lists in the categories that I am searching with my advanced saved searches, and have multiple DOG Show ribbons come up in my search results, I then look at 2 listings, confirm the seller id and resave the search with that seller EXCLUDED forever. They are an annoying distraction when looking at results pages. Also, the purple juicy juice box popup...if you are behind it I ignore you, just tired of clicking to get rid of it and scroll down several lines so it disappears topside..lots of people sometimes get ignored that way. You might call ebay again and tell them to make a way to block the purple box AND the ribbons from search results, so you don't lose as many sales. Congrats on being a great seller, but I can look at your feedback DSR's and tell that without the distractions!

It's not the Seller's fault nor is it something we have control over. You're angry with the wrong people. That's like not tipping the waitress because the cook screwed up the order.

My issue is more that our items for sale are being pushed to the back pages if someone looks at our item and doesn't buy it. (I'm glad you're not contributing to that if you are blocking all Sellers with ribbons).

Ladiesemporium -

I tried a few things with my listings, such as listing with Buy-It-Now with seven and ten day listings and they came back to the first and second pages. I also changed my title. From what I can tell, eBay wants us to use LESS search words to get better page rankings. They are DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! I thought my old titles were concise and included all the words a customer might use when doing a search, but as soon as I took out some of the main words, my items showed up again. I sold $400 in items that night. I can only guess at how much money this has been costing me by eBay making my items disappear to the back pages. For as greedy as they are anymore, you’d think they would want us to be able to sell our stuff so they can get their chunk.

If you can make any sense out of all of this, here is the page given by eBay that is supposed to help:

Link

If anyone else has any suggestions, I’m all ears. It’s like walking a high wire trying to figure out the perfect formula to be able to get your items where customers can see them. I am totally in the dark as to why eBay is complicating this site to where no one can sell anything.

sandeeland...your position is completely understandable. I am not reacting out of anger , but am fed up with the ebay pinks deciding how everything will work in the new world order when they used to have something that worked for everyone. Then that stuff on the number of search words etc, only applies when buyers accept the new world order "best match" sort .....NEVER! I only sort two ways: first is newly listed (only looking at what has been listed since my last search) and 2. ending soonest (so I can reconsider anything that I might have overlooked). The middle pages are not even looked at when I search, and anyone who believes that "best match" has anything to do with what I am hunting is naive. If I need something that might have been on page 3 or greater (I default to 100 items per page), I will run a search defining that one exact item by enough keywords to find it if there are only 1 or 2 listed in all of ebay. All of my saved searches are definitive enough that if there are 10,000 items listed, I will see fewer than 500 of them. I do not EXPAND search results, as when I was learning programming 40 years ago was taught less is more, letting the computer do the work it was designed to do instead of me reading page after page of results. I don't want to see something "sorta like" what I was hunting (ebay's alternate matches).

A view point from a buyer;

All I can say is that this new search sucks. I can use the exact same search three times in a row and many times get three different item quantitys
Many times it shows ZERO ITEMS FOUND and then shows items in stores this usually shows up on the first search. Hit the search button again and hundreds of items show up.

Search has also been weird
1. it will change your search criteria. ie, from cell phones to all categories.
2. it will change your spelling to something odd even though your spelling is correct
3. it randomly selects it's own sort by as you search for different items or the sort by box comes up empty.

I now have to set up my searches in a minimum of 4 different ways in order to find all the items that are listed under "widget".

What I do find every time at Ebay is IRRITATION to the point of saying F it. Then I go somewhere else.
Sorry I'm not buying today color me GONE.

Sounds like eBay's on a roll here. The Seller's aren't happy and neither are the Buyer's. Now THAT'S a true recipe for disaster! Nothing personal to the Buyer's who just posted, but I am glad to hear that you're sick to death of all of eBay's changes also. We Seller's have been P-O'd for quite some time.

eBay is playing with us like we're all a bunch of experimental rats. The ones that figure out the new eBay formula to list your item, get the cheese. If they lose a few rats along the way, oh well....there's always more rats, right?
