Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Jul 30, 2008 4:41 PM
Hi Everyone -

On May 19th, Trust & Safety’s John McDonald introduced a number of updates to our listing policies that our sellers have appreciated. Two changes that he announced have the potential to save considerable time and cost for our sellers:

-The removal of the Choice policy gets rid of the restriction that has required sellers to list individual listings for each size, color or configuration of the same item.

-The removal of the Multiple Listings Limit policy ends the 15-item rule that has governed how many identical listings a seller can have listed at the same time.

What is an identical item?

An item is considered identical if it is from the same seller, has the same title and the same listing format.

Where can you expect to see your item(s)?

The listing chosen for display will be determined by the sort option that the buyer chooses, such as Time Ending Soonest, Newly Listed , Total Cost, and Best Match.

Note:

When multiple auction-style listings with the same title have a different number of bids and different prices, these are no long considered identical and will all be displayed.

When can you expect to see these changes?

We are currently rolling these changes out to the site and expect to complete by next week for all the sort options.

If you have questions about how this will work with respect to your items in Search, please post them here so we can address your concerns.

We look forward to hearing from you,

The Finding Team

Hi Everyone -

Adding a little more info.

You can find John McDonald's original post here: Link

Why are we changing the search results to accomodate this change?

To prevent buyers from being overwhelmed by identical listings, advancements in Finding will limit the display of duplicates from the same seller.

For more information, please read our Frequently Asked Questions here: Link

Marni Sue - Just making sure that the "display of duplicates" applies to IDENTICAL titles. If I have a postcard listed: "Times Square @ Nite New York City NY 1907" and another postcard listed "Times Square New York City NY 1965", are these considered duplicates? Obviously they are not the same postcard.

Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Jul 30, 2008 8:23 PM
My problem with Identical Items is that eBay does not factor in the sub-title when doing the match. There is a category where I have many listings where the item has the same title but further descriptions in the sub-title that make them NOT identical items.

The title bar does not give me the space to do a brand name, brief title of item, size, metal type and gauge of metal, therefore I use the sub-title to further identify my items. These are not identical listing.

The Identical Items policy has virtually eliminated 90% of these listings from the view page.

Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Why is this link not placed higher on the page, so that everytime I do a search, I don't have to immediately scroll way to the bottom and click it?

Why is this even a link? Why is it not a customized option or preference, so that I don't have to waste time re-doing every single search that I make? And, then wait for the search results to load again. sigh. Every single time, I will likely resent the fact that eBay has made my searching experience a needlessly lengthy process.

Identical listings (meaning listings with identical title, listing format, and bidding activity) appear only once per search or browse results page.
To view all identical listings, please click here.

--------------
FACT: When I do a keyword search, or browse a category, or view a Seller's items, I do NOT want eBay hiding listings from me!

I would really like to see the count displayed differently; more informatively:

288 items total (142 identical listings not displayed*. View all.)

The * would be a footnote indicator, and when one went to the bottom of the page (where footnotes belong), they would see what is there now:

* Identical listings (meaning listings with identical title, listing format, and bidding activity) appear only once per search or browse results page.

Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Jul 31, 2008 7:32 AM
Although eBay has said many times they've put measures in place to prevent "gaming" of search results, it's pretty easy with how things are today. Simple changes to your item title will allow extra listings to become viewable, and if you also list in another format (IE auction format in addition to fixed price) one of each of those will become viewable also. In fact I'd say the way best match is today promotes gaming which is a scary thought. If the idea is to prevent search results from getting cluttered it won't take long for sellers to start changing their titles to get their items shown in search concurrently. So in time buyers will be confused seeing a bunch of identical items with slightly different titles. How does that improve the buyer experience? Sellers that don't do this will be disadvantaged.

So at this point for those of us like myself that sell primarily with fixed price listings, there isn't much, if any benefit to running more than one or two fixed price listings concurrently per day (with multiple qty) that I can see (unless I game the system and change all of my titles). This would be a significant savings on listing fees. While I'm sure this change is viewed by eBay as a way to unclutter search results for buyers, eBay has probably unknowingly forced a change to the site that won't take sellers long to take advantage of. (listing less to maintain the same search exposure and sales) And eBay gets a lot less in listing fees. Why pay to list items that may never get one single view?

It's really hard if not impossible to develop any kind of a listing strategy or business plan with constant significant changes to the marketplace! I called my eBay acct mgr yesterday and he knew nothing about this site change. No communication internally..sad

This is an Outrage. PAID listings not being... 'listed'.

If you have numerous TIMED AUCTIONS- let's say 20 that will end in an hour- only ONE will show up- in only ONE place on ONE page on ALL OF EBAY.

The outrage is growning- Read and REPLY to this post, AND to these 3 (of many) posts started by other victimized sellers:

Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Hi Everyone
Sorry for not responding earlier. Thanks for taking the time to look at this feature and offer your thoughts adn suggestions. Please come back with more comments and questions:

-Neglus
You are right. This applies to identical titles only. So in your postcard example these listings would both show up.

-Bbbargin
Maybe I did not understand your question. But we would not hide listings which have different prices. For this feature, identical item means the same title, price and format and of course from the same seller. If there is a less expensive item we would show that as well as the more expensive one.

For the auctions example you bring up a great point. But we have seen a lot of buyers wait to bid on auctions if they see another auction from the same seller for the same item ending later. We are hoping to induce a sense of urgency by showing only one of the identical listings.

-Kjswtn, Stoneware3 and Glenda
Thanks you for taking the time to look at this carefully and share your thoughts. All are excellent suggestions. I will forward your recommendations to the team working on this feature.

-Ottercreek
My apologies for the internal communication issue. We will make sure the account managers are aware of this change ASAP.

-Easy_buys
Your auctions will show up if they are different listings. You can have up to 10 different listings on each page. We will show one only if the listings are identical.

Best Regards

Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Hi Glenda and evrybody.

I'm confused, why would you want to ever see the identical items? In the categories I shop this will stop the spammers and prevent me from having to add a new minus (-) word to my searches to get rid of the duplicate clutter

if sellers have more than one, shouldn't they just list with multiple items in the same listing anyway? maybe sellers will start doing this instead

Not true. Yesterday I had identical titled fixed price items. Pottery Barn Cottontail Mobiles. One has a slightly banged up box, so the price is $63. The other is in a perfect box it's price is $65. In a best match search only the $65 showed up UNTIL I added 1 to the title of the banged up box mobile. now they both show.

I should clarify that I was searching n best match for pottery barn cottontail mobile. 1 page of results, 4 items total, only 3 showed up because two of mine had the same title, and DIFFERENT prices.

Identical Items from the Same Seller in Search Results

Jul 31, 2008 4:14 PM
I was asked to move my question to this thread.

My question is about the 10 similar items by any seller showing up. It is just wrong to do that to any of us, but my question is this:

What if my page is set at 50 items per page?

What if it is 200 per page (which I keep mine on)?

Will I miss out on a ton of records and postcards that are on the site but I can't see them just because YOU think it is best to hide similar items by a same seller?

These are different. Just because my search is broad doesn't mean I don't want to see every single solitary item matching that.

I don't want to go into 50 sellers listings to try and dig out that one item I am looking for.

And, as a seller why have hundreds listed if only 10 will show and all are similar themed and might come up with 50 or so for any search?

How does your search engine adjust for different size page views (or does it)?

And, again, this is just plan wrong. As a result I will not be restocking my store here but will move it all elsewhere and maybe run a few auctions per week here to pull my customers there. Is that what you want? I want a 25,000 item (all different) store here. Why don't you want me here?
