*** Test: Making Buyers More Efficient - A Redesign of Search Results ***

Aug 15, 2006 12:09 PM
Hi everyone,

I’m Nico Posner with eBay’s Finding team. As you’ve seen and heard from us over the past few months, we’re working on a number of projects that drive new buyers to the site, and that ensure that -- when they get here -- they have the best shopping experience possible. An important project we’ll be launching as a test later this month is a new search results page. The new design shows more information for each listing than our current pages. We’ve also improved the look-and-feel to help buyers be more efficient as they make decisions about which listings they want to click into.

About The New Search Results Design

In our new search results pages, the space allotted to each listing will be bigger, and we’ll be doing more to call out key information. For example, price information will be shown in a larger size and a new color, making it easier to scan through listings. We’re also including an “Add to Watch list” link on each item, so buyers can add interesting listings to their Watch lists right away.

Most listing rows will also have a link called “See quick details.” When a buyer clicks this link, or hovers over it with their mouse, they’ll see a new section pop up that contains key information such as the shipping & handling charges and accepted payment methods.

And just as they can today, buyers will be able to customize what information they see on these pages according to what is most important to them, by clicking on the “Customize display” link at the top of the item list, making modifications as desired, and then clicking on the “Apply changes” button.

Our Test Plan

Later this month, a small percentage of buyers (selected at random) will start seeing the new search results pages. An even smaller number of buyers will also see the new design on eBay Motors.

We will keep you informed about plans to launch this new design to the whole site after we complete our testing period.

If you’d like to see what the new design looks like, please see our information page. Please provide your feedback, questions or issues regarding the new search results page by posting your comments to this thread. We will be reviewing and responding to your comments and questions on this discussion thread periodically throughout this test phase. I will post a link to a Community Workshop that we will be hosting on August 24th from 12noon - 1pm PT to gather your feedback.

Thank you in advance to for your help and support during this test! We hope you find the changes we have made both fun and helpful in improving your finding experience.

Sincerely,

Nico Posner

Senior Product Manager, Finding

Question 1: I don’t see the new search results design but I would like to. Is there a way for me to opt in?

Answer: A small percentage of users are selected at random who will see the new design and functionality. There is no way to request to be in a test group.

Question 2: I used to click on the links at the top of a column to sort the information. What do I do now?

Answer: All available sort controls can be found in the Sort by dropdown control at the top of the item list on the right. Sorted information displayed in the center of each item will be highlighted to help you scan through the item list more effectively.

If your test proves successful, will these search changes include store inventory?

As it is now, gallery pics for store inventory never show in a search. Would this mean a gallery pic would show up in a search, only after a buyer clicked on the item or never?

If each item receives more space does that mean that fewer items will show up on the first page of results?

I guess I don't get IT, how does shuffling around the same old data draw more more buyers?

Seems to me that IT would only confuse the buyers currently using the site and put them off from trying to figure IT out.

The never ending story of let's change everything and see who cares.

Every time there is a change, which is often, we are all supposed to go to a workshop to learn how to use eBay with the new changes? What ever happened to *user friendly*?

Fix the broken search and stop adding more bloated features that don't work half the time!

Like the idea, hope it doesn't slow down folks who still use the old slow dial up for searches. I'm lucky to have satellite connection, but even THAT bogs down in searches.

One more suggestion/problem to be considered. Have noted when searching for items myself and end up looking in someone's 'store', I seem to get 'STUCK' in the store and can't get back to my original search. I usually end up having to start the search all over from 'home', which is a real time waster! If objective is to make searching easier & faster for buyers, maybe this could also be addressed at some point.

Good luck with the new and improved endeavor!

I'm disappointed to learn that eBay is making even more changes!!!! And, it will be quite frustrating to those who are "chosen" to be included in the TEST.

This is just becoming such an un-friendly site, with all the constant changes that are not asked for by either buyers or sellers.

I just want to throw this into the mix-we want (need) buyers to click into the description and if this discourages that, it's going to cause problems. I have a website that shows just the pic and title and then "click for more info". A buyer bought $140 worth of my towels thinking the picture was the whole towel. Had he read the description, he would have seen the dimensions of the design. It took some time for me to figure out what happened. So I hope you have facilities to see if a buyer is buying without clicking into the description using this search and understand that that kind of buyer behavior is going to hurt both sellers and buyers because buyers are not going to understand the item and terms unless they see the description page.

Hi Nico!

Thank you for presenting this. I think it looks good, but a few more questions (in addition to the above re: load times and SIF gallery pics):

1) Most listing rows will also have a link called “See quick details.” What do you mean by "most"? Is it a cat specific thing? Or a future pay-per-listing enhancement?

2) Location: What will you do with still thousands of users that have gimmicky Location slogans, and not actual, geographical locations?

3) the space allotted to each listing will be bigger Are the Gallery pics going to be shown at a larger size?

Thanks!

Just my .02 .05 .10 .25 When will it end?
The marketplace has been overwhelmed with identical, often poorly-priced items that have diluted the magic of the eBay experience
Also, in response to the requests of many large sellers, we're raising the 10-item multiple listings limit to 15

I'm having a difficult time trying to view the examples. Is there a "number of bids" column????

If there is box to choose "watch this item", can I assume that the box will somehow indicate if you are already watching and/or bidding on the item? I made a suggestion some time back that it would be very helpful to not have to open up the item's page to find out you are already watching and/or bidding on the item - if it could be made apparent on the list page.

Hi
Here is a feature this should have but does not.
You should have the option of searching the questions and answers section where seller posts thier replies to buyers questions. Here's just one reason why. Lets say I search for an item by it's part number. The seller did not post it in their listing, but did post that number in the answer to the buyer question at the bottom. Currently I would miss that item I want becuase the search will not bring it up.

Therefore you should have the option of searching the questions and answers section where seller posts thier replies to buyers questions.

Thanks

Thanks for the watch box on the summary, a much needed feature. I agree with the other writer it would be nice to have a watching indicator.

I also like the feature that auto computes the shipping. However, why doesn't that work the same in my watching list and in the actual auction page?

Speaking of shipping...
Please do more to encourage(force) people to use the proper shipping entry and/or calculator so shipping shows up in the search results. Something like not completing the entry until the field is filled or assessing a large "premium" for not supplying shipping.

My main reason for this, not to mention that it is a pain to have to keep asking sloooooooow-replying sellers for a shipping quote, is...
Shipping has become quite the scam on ebay!!!!

I have been seeing more and more auctions that are BIN for a $1 or so and then have several tens or hundreds of dollars for shipping for an item less than a pound! Of course, they proudly proclaim their "money back guarantee" (excluding shipping, of course, in fine print)

I would think that it would be easy enough to insert software that could compare what is being offered in most cases to the shipping and at least set some flags for your own people to look over the listing.

Why has the "distance from me" issue not been address for the last six months? I do a lot of buying from bargainland-liquidation, and used to be able to get ONLY their Phoenix location by specifying "within 200 miles". Now any distance specification shows nothing. And now I am forced to individually look at the 10K items per day to determine which items I want to even consider bidding on.
Why pay shipping from elsewhere, often bringing the total cost up to higher than buying new retail locally?

If the problem is not resolved, by either eBay or Bargainland, I will quit buying anything from them!
So the search "features" are driving away customers!
