The New Search Experience Update

Sep 8, 2008 4:37 PM
Hello Everyone!

We just wanted to take a moment to let you know that beginning this week, we will be directing more traffic to the New Search Experience.

Based on your input, we have made some key changes since we initially introduced the New Search Experience back in May, including:

  • Updating the look & feel so that you can expand and collapse modules on the left side of the page.
  • Making Preferences even easier to find in the left side of the page.
  • Re-integrating the tabs to filter by BIN & Auction only
  • Including Store items in the BIN Tab and BIN filters

Information on the new search experience in general
Why are we introducing a new search?
The new search is intended to make it easier for buyers to find the things they love. We want a more engaging, dynamic experience that is fundamentally driven by buyers.

We've focused on three major areas:

  • Recall –improving which items are returned in a search
  • Navigation - helping buyers expand and narrow a search to make it easier to find just the right item
  • Relevance - making the entire experience more relevant for each individual search event. This includes using the right recall and navigation for the search, but also in sorting the most relevant items

To Improve Recall
In the new experience, we expand the items returned in search (recall), by including item specifics, categories in addition to the item’s title, to show more of the items a buyer is looking for (Sellers: this is why using Item Specifics is so important!)

Try comparing a search for a few of these keywords on the old and new search and you’ll see what we mean.
  • size xxl sweatshirt
  • nwt dress size 8
  • birthstone for january
  • widescreen tv
  • shawshank redemption widescreen dvd
  • left handed clubs

To Make Navigation / Refinement Easier

There are more than 125 million items on eBay today and still growing! The new search experience makes finding what you want in this incredible abundance even easier. Whether you know exactly what you want and need to refine right down to it, or want to browse and be inspired by the unmatched selection from the worlds most diverse marketplace. We’re also focused on providing the best experience in each category, so you may have visual experiences in some categories where pictures are especially important to buyers, such as Clothing, Shoes & Accessories, Jewelry, and Art and more ‘productized’ experiences in Books and movies

Relevance: to let the community of sellers and especially buyers drive the experience.

The new finding platform is fundamentally built to be driven by the activity of buyers and sellers. For example:
Sellers define and select item specifics that improve search recall and drive the site navigation. Buyers who use navigation based on these then ‘vote’ with every purchase, which also ranks the importance of item specifics and other navigation elements. Some of our tools, such as Search auto-complete and related searches, also aggregate successful buyer activity and provide it to other people searching on the site to help them refine their queries, or discover new potential areas of interest.

Best Match uses buyer activity to rank items. Items that buyers buy more often will get higher rankings in search. For Fixed Price listings, item relevance and detailed seller ratings will continue to be important factors in Best Match, but instead of Time Ending Soonest, the focus will be more on total cost (price plus shipping) and recent sales history, favoring items that are selling the fastest. For Auction-style listings, item relevance, detailed seller ratings and time ending soonest will continue to be the most important factors in Best Match search results.

For more information on how to promote your fixed price listings please look at the FAQs here:

How do I get the comparison check box to show up with my my search results. I looked through all the options on the "customize view" link and I couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks.

Hi cmburke0804

The comparison function in search is not popular and, I think somebody implied it causes server issues - it is not going to be implemented in the new search.

There is a comparison function in the Watch section of the beta My eBay, however.

Hi marnisue@ebay.com,

I'm not enamored of the "Too many results? Click below" slide-down box with blue bubbles at the top of the sidebar. My initial reaction was one of vocal dismay, actually, since I thought it was yet-another advertisement ....

Hi marnisue@ebay.com,

Is there any likelihood, do you think, that the quotation mark method of circumventing expansions could work on item specifics in descriptions? I *think* that's the only expansion that is ignored by the quotation mark method of turning expansions off ....

I'd like to be able to be able to bring back un-expanded, un-tweaked, un-fixed, un-helped, listings that match exactly the words I used to search - not always, of course, but on those occasions when eBay's software does too much thinking and reinterpreting of what I might want. :)

If it's not broken, don't fix it. Don't like the new seller pages. Your eyes scroll through the old way better than jumping around on the new one. Looks like the webmaster need something to do.

Hi, I can't get the shipping cost to show up so I have to click on the link to see the shipping. I do not like the new search. The old one was much better and quicker for me. I have clicked the opt out a bunch of times but it does no good, I still have the new search. This version is much harder and takes to much time.

Would you stop changing me back to your new search experience? I am tired of having to opt out.

Once someone opts out, that should be it.

Hi heidelberg_reece

Did you click on Customize View and add the Shipping to the display? The Shipping Amount has displayed for me consistently - yesterday I moved the column around (though it didn't stick; the display is back the way it was - marniesue@ebay.com, are you reading?), but the Shipping column is still there.

Hi anniestoo and heidelberg_reece

There are, according to some folks, different cookies for search opt out. Those people who opt out at the bottom of search results but end up back in the beta search seem to have had more luck when they opt out here:

eBay Inc. (EBAY)

Wonder why eBay thinks that the never-ending changes are working? Stockholders seem to have lost faith in eBay.

I cringe every time that I browse through search results. I know that I should not see the same exact item (yep, same item number) show up on pages 1, 4, and 7. eBay has to know how broken their search engine is.

I am encouraged by the changes that are being implemented in the new Search (and by the dropping of the cringe-inducing name "Finding Experience.") It is clear to me that the team charged with making the changes is listening to the users and being guided by those very people who are using the Search.

Special kudos to marnisue@ebay.com for listening and acting, and for exhibiting patience and understanding. Also to Glenda, who has such a talent for cutting to the crux of a problem, and suggesting effective ways to solve it.

Well I am DISCOURAGED. There's no hope. MarniSue shouldn't even have to be here to explain anything to us. If it has to be explained, it must be too complicated.

Go back to this:

I type in a keyword, ebay gives me all items with that keyword, in the order *I* choose. By the way I'm looking for collectibles, so I don't have to wade through a thousand items of the "same thing", so I DON'T NEED all the fancy baloney filtering things. And I especially hate Best Match, but most people do.

No matter how much spin MarniSue puts on this, it stinks for me, and I'm a buyer. Aren't I the type of person they're trying to please? Well, MarniSue, you're not pleasing me, nor are you making my buying experience any easier.

But thousands of us have already told you we hate the new search, yet you and ebay proceed to shove it down our throats.

Whatever.

The New Search Experience Update

I've got to agree with the general concencus here, did we ask for this change? Why do we need this change? Let me choose and stay chosen on the unimproved way. One of my favorite features that seems to have disappeared is the picture gallery. I could look for an item, then choose to see it, along with its listing title. It's just too much of a PITA to try and find things now.

Wish "Yahoo" had auctions still, maybe they'll bring them back if they read these posts?

NO MORE OPTING OUT.

USERS DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT THE NEW SEARCH EXPERIENCE IS REALLY BEST FOR THEM.

COME ON, Ebay KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU. TRY IT FOR 30 DAYS.
AFTER THE 30 DAYS IS UP AND YOU STILL DON'T LIKE IT, QUIT USING Ebay.

AFTER ALL, EBAY KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU.....
