Update: New Search Experience

Feb 10, 2009 11:02 AM
Hi Everyone -

I hope everyone is having a very happy & healthy New Year.

As you probably already know, last year we introduced a new search experience to the site. In the New Search Experience, left hand refinement is even better than before. More areas have refinements available and you can multi-select the values that are important to you. We also offer the snapshot view where you can window shop for items as well as a more robust set of customizable options from which to choose. And soon, we will be able to offer refinement on the Seller's added Item specifics in certain areas! If you have not had the opportunity to look at the New Search, you can opt in to the experience by clicking the link at the top of the search pages to try it now.

Try it Now O9
We wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that over the coming months we will be rolling out some key features to the New Search Experience that you have been requesting.
These features include but are not limited to:

  • Adding the "Get More results in Other eBay areas" you can see currently at the bottom of the classic search pages as well as the Tools Section

  • Upgrading the Category selector on the Advanced search pages to reflect any subcategories you may have used in your browse path

  • Including a new customize your preference function so that you have more control over what you see in the left navigation

  • Updating the drop downs to change your sort and view to make them easier to use

  • Creating a more user-friendly experience when your search returns 0 items.

  • Supporting the ability to do a negative search in a lower level category

Last but not least, we wanted to let you know that we will continue our ongoing efforts to incrementally increase the site speed.

Once these features are available for you in the New Search we will start taking steps to discontinue Classic Search. We also plan to follow up with a more formal post on the Announcement boards in the coming weeks.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to let us know how you feel about the New Search Experience. We hope you continue to let us know your questions, comments and concerns.

I will continue to report your issues back to the team so that we can take all of your suggestions into consideration for future enhancement to eBay's Search Experience.

Best Regards,

MarniSue

Best thing about the New Search today is that the 'Opt out' link is back... I will continue to do so until the last. New Search remains slow, stalls on page loads, and is clumsey from an intuitive standpoint.

Marnisue? That's the scariest thing you've said in here so far. If you'd read any of the feedback from the users, you'd know by now that the biggest single enhancement the users have asked for is to keep the OPT OUT link working because we don't like or even want the new search. Every time you see a negative remark in here about the new search, you ignore it completely. Every time you see a thread with possibly hundreds or more messages in it detailing a problem, you -might- pop in on one of them with an "I don't understand your comment. Could you spell it out a little better..." type of response.

The messages in every thread of the discussion board run thousands of negative comments for every handful that aren't, so please don't sit there and thank us for letting you know how we feel and then make such a show of openly ignoring every bit of it. It's rude and it doesn't fool anyone in here.

So eBay has stopped allowing the old search.

I have been going to Ruby Lane more and more. So pleasant there; easy searches, fast loading. Researched the fees for setting up a shop there, too. Not bad.

Today eBay would not allow me to Opt-out of the new search. Ruby Lane now has my vintage business. Amazon has the rest of my business. eBay can have the remainder (not much left). Oh well, it's not like people didn't try to let you guys know.

Hello MarniSue,

This may not be exactly the type of "Search" issue that this thread is designed for...however, it is a "Search" issue, and although there are other threads on the boards that address this issue, thus far, there aren't any Pinks giving any answers.

I was hoping that, if you cannot address this issue, you can direct me to a thread that has a Pink who can.

Specifically, it appears that recently (the past 2 weeks or so for most based on the other threads mentioned above), Google Base Data Feeds are failing during upload to Google Base. In most cases, I am reading that Google isn't accepting the links that are being generated from the listing feeds...specifically...

Your Google Base-specific file will be located at Link

Can you give me any insight into this? or guide me to a thread where we can get some answers? The community itself seems to be at a loss, and it appears some eBay Moderation is required.

Thanks...

Well, there is that old saying, their education exceeds their intelligence. The whiz kids at ebay design are designing ebay right out of existence. The old search was great. This new search is slow and annoying so I've started buying from other sites. The complaints on the new search that are on the discussion boards are just the tip of the iceberg with the public. Ebay could do a poll on it with all sellers and buyers they currently have and design accordingly. Customer retention is EVERYTHING in today's economy. What attracted and kept the past customers is a real clue to getting new ones. My age 30's children with very decent incomes never buy on ebay altho they will scan thru it now and then, lose interest and move on to other sites. I think they are the buyer crowd ebay hopes to entice with the new search and that generation isn't all that interested in buying on ebay. With the new search being so annoying to the old customers, what do you think it is doing to new buyers?

Thanks for taking the time to post. I have, in fact, read every thread on the previous post & although I was not able to respond as often as I would have liked, I have been logging your complaints and forwarding them to the appropriate team or teams for review.

As a result, we have made many incremental changes to the Search experience including but not limited to

  • Adding the Tabs back into the experience
  • Updating Advanced search to require less scrolling and an addional search button
  • Changing the sort for the Search Expansion
  • Integrating the search Expansion more closely to the search results
  • Including stores by default in the BIN tab
  • upgrading the left side of the page to make search options more discoverable
  • Returning the Global search bar to the very top of the page
  • Adding related searches to the new search experience
  • Reducing pageweight to make the experience more agile & increasing the loadtime of the page
  • Adding opt out to the top of the page consistently
  • Fixing issues with Size, Brand, Condition & Color as reported by the community
  • Amending the identical listing policy:Link
  • Adding the store & powerseller icons to the sellers other items page
  • Showing the watch items link by default in the search results
  • and most recently, changing the way sort & view operate from hover over to drop downs

I am sorry if I have given the impression prior to this post that we are not listening to your issues with the new search. We are. That being said, in order for us to begin to make Custom Item Specifics searchable, we need the New Search Platform, so our focus is on improving the experience based on your suggestions and our research.

Thanks, as always for taking the time to post.

I am not sure, I will see what i can find out.

Hi Transistor

The opt out link should still be available should you feel so inclined to use it.

Please try the url Link. It might make it easier to see as there are no search results on that page.

If for some reason you are not seeing it on that page, please email me directly to MarniSue@ebay.com (using email as opposed to my eBay messages, please) so that we can investigate.

Thanks for taking the time to post,

IMO listing on ebay is like flushing money down the toilet UNLESS you happened to be one of the top volume sellers in a particular listing category!

I wish Ebay staff would just come out with the truth for once and admit you just dont care if most communitee members like any of these new changes you've forced upon all of us in your ultimate quest to cater to a rather small niche of mega sellers and power buyers.

Interesting how the variety of unique, interesting, one of kind type items just keep disappearing in searches as more and more long time ebayers get tired absorbing listing fees on item not getting any best match exposure merely because they lack recent multiple item sales.

SO instead....you find the same repeative listings over and over again in best match day after day. It's interest ebay claims recent sales are critical to listings getting high exposure in best match every single day that may get one or two sales monthly which obviously doesnt equate to a POPULAR item.

No matter which searches I do, I find mass merchandiser/high volume sellers getting majority in best match the have pathetic sell thru rates, while smaller volume sellers offering unique merchandise totally excluded from ANY best match exposure which is where Ebay purposely drives all the eyeballs.

Hi dcsbodyjewelry,

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Auctions and Fixed Price listings are sorted using very different criteria, and it is important for sellers to consider this when choosing a format for their listings.

The Auction format is sorted with Time:Ending Soonest at the main criteria. We recommend that sellers with unique or hard to find merchandise list in this format. On average, Auction listings get more exposure on the first page of search results than Fixed Price. All of this insures that our unique items – the ones that make eBay truly special – continue to be seen.

Our fixed price format is more suitable for multi-quantity, commodity type items. Recent Sales – a measure of popularity - is the most important factor in sort for the fixed price format, insuring that the fixed price items that our buyers want the most are more visible.

Re: Update: New Search Experience

Feb 11, 2009 5:04 PM
I have 6 listings running. All listings are fix price, offering free shipping, have a quantity of 10 available in each listing, my DSRs are 4.9, 4.9. 4.9, and 4.8. I have over 7000 sales with 99.9 lifetime feedback rating and all items I have listed had nearly 100 percent sell thru rate back when ending soonest was the default search engine.

All 6 of my 3 day listings are scheduled to close within a few hours, and I couldnt even find any of my listings search 3 page (600 listings). Yet listings not scheduled for many many days are on the first page of best match that have dismall sell thru rates.

This is the primary reason my fiancee (EX 6 year silver Power seller) and I (ex 6 year bronze power seller) closed our stores and stopped listing here back in Oct.

It got really old shelling out $1000s in fees monthly between our two stores and all our listings and still not getting much listing exposure in the new default searches watching our sell thru rates drop from 70-80 percent on most anything we listed in core to less than 25 percent as soon as best match evolved and 10 item rule went into effect (especially since we are niche sellers that only list in a few categories).

It amazes both of us how we have great SEO on our website, and our 2008 website sales were the best we've ever had, YET our ebay sales fell apart losing money 3 months on a row after factoring in the massive ammount of fees on listings getting little or NO exposure on search.

It is so blatantly obvious that ebay only wants to expose listings of a selct small group of sellers in each listing category, and your company dont care of many 100,000s of reputable sellers that were once strong ebay loyalist are upset.

It blows my mind ebay claims all these changes were to improve the buyer experience, and that ebay listened to the buyers. There are quite a few alternative sites out there now registered as many as 10,000 new mebers on a daily basis, and most of these memberships are ex ebay sellers most of whom USED to regular shoppers here on this site.

I have no idea what ebay has up their sleeve....but driving off so many loyal shoppers (ex small volume sellers) to cater to a select small group of larger vendors just dont make any sense to me. Heck, my fiancee and I may not be top sellers in the categories we listed on, but over 6 years, we did generate over 22,000 sales, made 783 purchases between us...yet we didnt get as much as a follow up questionairre from ebay asking why we no long buy or sell here. Pretty sad!

I decided to list a select few 3 day listings just to see of best match was any better, and since I didnt get even one listing exposed in bet match using solid keywords, multiple quantity fixed price listing with free shipping and above average DSRs....I can see our decision to close our stores and stop doing business here was a smart decision on our part.

We've gone from being some of ebay's biggest cheerleaders over the years motivating many locals to buy and sell on this site to not having a positive thing to say about your company after the poor seller support we recieved most of last year....which doesnt appear to have improved any.....just the same old retoric about how most buyers and sellers like the new ebay experience, or that the new ebay is somehow vastly improved which is a joke in our opinion and the opinion of 100s of 100,000s of other once loyal ebay members that have been leaving this site at an alarming rate.

Less than a year ago, there were 11 local small businesses that I'm aware of and know personally that used to do business on this site, and now none of us have stores here. That seems to be growing trend no matter wich seller site, social network or ecommerce blog we visit. Really sad ebay totally disreagards they very same small vendors that helped build the company into the behemoth (many of whom bought 10 times more than they sold....but stopped shopping here once they were basically forced of the seller platform. Very sad ebay places so little value on it customers.
