Update on Identical Items

Sep 3, 2008 11:46 AM
Hi Everyone -

On July 30th, we posted here about eBay’s identical item policy for listings. Since the change we have been monitoring the impact on buyers closely. We’re encouraged by the results we’ve seen in Fixed Price but haven’t seen the same improvements in buyer metrics for Auctions. As such, we plan to make some changes to the implementation based on these insights.

Starting this week, the display of identical, fixed price, non featured items will be limited to one, but featured items and auctions will all display reardless of whether they have identical titles or not.
Of course, if you prefer to see all identical fixed price items, a link will still be provided at the bottom of your results to expand your results to view all items, identical or not.

In summary, all the following items will display whether or not they have identical titles:
Auctions
Featured Fixed Price Listings (all Fixed Price items with the Featured Plus and/or Gallery Featured upgrade)

For more details about what it means to have an identical title and when your item is no longer considered identical, please see our previous announcement here:

We appreciate all the great feedback you have given to the Finding Team. Please post your questions here so we can continue to address them. Some of you have noticed the change already, I will answer your questions and any others on the identical items topin, on this thread.
We look forward to hearing from you,

Neelika--from the Finding Team

How about returning all auction items to their rightful places? (the 10 items per page per seller rule)?

Any chance?

So...basically....now big companies can put 100 listings up (since there is no 10-item rule) and flood out small sellers because they all will show now?

I don't know who ebay thinks they are. People must feel that they can trust a site, especially if they are going to spend money there. You can't change things every week or two and expect anyone to feel secure to conduct business there. I don't have any faith in anything ebay says anymore. Even if they mean it and think it is true, they might change it again tomorrow afternoon. Anyone that has any experience in sales, knows you cannot do this. I guess ebay thinks they can change the rules of human nature, too, but they can't.

I think it's time to pull back BM as default search on auctions as well. BM makes no sense as default search in auction environment.

What about people using same listing many times but changing order of words so they still show up 10 plus times?

You keep on changing your mind every 5 minutes.
We can't trust any policy change anymore because it always seems to be changed or reversed subsequently. This is leading to a completely unstable business model and sellers simply will not be able to cope if you keep changing your minds.
...
I think most sellers liked this policy changes, it prevented large sellers from flooding certain categories, the change enabled the rest of us to get a look in.
...
But eBay have changed their minds yet again, only a couple of weeks after changing the policy.

I dont understand what the OP is even saying, does anyone else? If we can't understand what you are saying, why would we bring any good stuff to this site. It seems to me people can still make a living selling garbage around here, and that has less risk. I dunno, maybe with all these changes the rule of thumb for the selling community is: list what you can lose here and list the good stuff elsewhere.

Really ebay, can you just tell me how much money you want me to pay you each month so I can pay it and you can let me list in peace. At least then I can build it in to some kind of business plan. The amount of time involved in learning you is really the most inefficient waste of my businesses' time

Woot!

I have a competitor who sells an identical product to me, but has at any one time 100 active listings for it. They are 45% more expensive than me and always list 30 - 50 available. When the identical listing filter worked, I had a massive increase in sales, now, I am 3 to 5 pages down the search and sales have plummeted again. This is not good for sellers (unless you are massive) and is not good for buyers either. I'm just so glad Amazon has taken off recently.

Hi chops,

This is how I interpret it in a nutshell:

This means that there are now no rules about the number of identical-title listings that can be listed, and if they're in auction format, they will all show up.

If identically-titled listings are in fixed-price format, only one will show up, as before.

And if somebody lists identically-titled featured listings, they'll all show up.

As a buyer I love not seeing identical items. I was searching glass paperweights last night and item after item of the same things kept showing up, page after page.

I don't want to see identical items in fixed price or in auctions.

Give buyers a choice! Let them decide whether they want to see identical items or not. That is the best answer.

Finding team:

What improvements in metrics for auctions are you looking for?

Can you see buyer frustration if the SR have too many identical items?

Can you describe the results in Fixed Price that you are seeing that are making you happy?

Counterpoint to parsnany's excellent message: I want to see everything because sellers may use "glass paperweight" as a title and every one of their paperweights may be different and simply inadequately described.

Hence, I want the rule back restricting the number of actual identical items a seller can list, so clear-cut abuse can be reported and dealt with.

Failing that, I want the link or checkbox to show or hide fixed-price duplicates to be obvious before the search, not hidden in micro-type at the bottom of the page and forcing you to do the search twice.

Well, they never enforced that rule when they had it.

Personally, though I think it is wrong to hide any listing, I'm not nearly as concerned about the hiding of identical listings as I am about the hiding of more than ten items by a seller on a given set of results. That is insane, and stands a GREAT CHANCE of hiding STUFF I WANT TO BY from me, AN ACTIVE BUYER.
