Viewed links are not staying highlighted

Jun 19, 2009 9:50 AM
I am so sick of this problem! I call Ebay everyday to report it but to no avail. Now I received a condescending email saying that I have to adjust my history settings on Firefox. I have been using Ebay since 1999 and have never had this sort of problem. Then all of a sudden it happens to everyone and they think we're total idiots that do not know how to change our internet settings? We'll see who the real morons are when bidding starts to diminish. Nobody I know, including myself, wants to sit on the computer for hours viewing items we already saw one hour ago.

> "... with more than 98% of you now using the new search we'll be retiring the older technology in April 2009. "

WOW. 98%!! I misremembered it. (Was that even a word pre-Dubya?)

And I remember the distinction between "using it" and "loving it" but I swear that at least one of the ebay announcements had the chutzpah to claim, if not love, at least "prefer."

And the truth or lie of the 98% was borne out when the uk users came over to our search discussion board to vent because they were forcibly converted a couple of weeks before we were.

*bump*
Well I just did my search for a certain book Title Only and a got about fifty results and looked at about four listings.

I IMMEDIATELY redid the search with Title & Description which returned about 80 results and low and behold:

3 of the 4 listings I had looked at were NOT highlighted.

The one that was highlighted was listed on the Australia eBay site which apparently isn't yet subject to the lovely multiple URLs for the same exact listing that we yanks are subject to in the New Search Experience!

Oh and another thing, while it's nice to actually be able to go to Page Two of the search results it really is disconcerting to be slammed up to the top of the current page first: even if you know that it was a compromise in the code so that the cursor wouldn't always force itself into the top search box when you went back to the results page after viewing a listing.

Will it be enough of an off-putting experience to new users/bidders/buyers on the site? Who knows? As Rummy famously said on multiple occassions.

Now I received a condescending email saying that I have to adjust my history settings on Firefox.

That's funny, because when I wrote them about it they told me that it was a browser problem caused by some Firefox deficiency and that I needed to use Internet Explorer 8.0 instead.

Of course, it doesn't work there, either...

Still broken. I am SO tired of looking at the same items over and over because the links don't get highlighted correctly. The links should be direct links to the auction. This would fix the issue.

The only reason this is so difficult to fix is because the developers defiantly refuse to let go of the way they are tracking where people are coming from and going to. Apparently, keeping their "method" is more important than keeping happy customers. They need to either get rid of all the garbage in the link or get rid of the customers.

Like I said it my earlier message, I don't spend as much time on eBay anymore because of this and the changes to the way stores are done. I've gotten back over an hour per day by never searching stores. Sorry, sellers. You want me to look at your stores, get eBay to fix both pieces.

With the less time I spend on eBay, I now also spend alot less money. So, at least I can thank eBay for my checkbook recovery stimulus plan. Heh. I guess you could say the new search DOES save me money; just not quite the way eBay planned.

Blast-off Girl, calling eBay every day is wasting precious minutes that you will never get back. I've always operated under the assumption that eBay has no customer service so I never call and rarely email them.

anothersillyman, you're absolutely right about the real problem here.

honestly, do they really need to track that one time I used Title only and immediately after that I used Title + Description? What possibily can that tell them that's useful?

The only reason the highlighted links do not operate properly is because of the advertiser links on each page - those annoying ads generate revenue for every page refresh.
ebay won't tell you this is the reason, they just dance around the problem to "reassure" buyers, because having multiple page hits = more $$$ revenue for ebay, and their advertising clients.
I doubt this will be fixed.

I agree with you. It's been months since this problem emerged and they have done nothing to rectify the situation. That's ok...I pretty much gave up on Ebay and rarely buy stuff anymore. Thanks Ebay for screwing up a perfectly fine website. My wallet thanks you for saving me tons of money.

Just bumping to keep this thread alive.

I too can't stand the fact that I am wasting time looking at the same items since visited links are not staying highlighted.

Thank you for keeping this thread alive. I honestly do not think Ebay technicians even bother to check out these forums. They clearly do not care about us. I think it's pretty obvious that the staff will not correct the problem. It's been months and nothing to show for it.

Absolutely right. In fact, I haven't even done a real search since my last posting. I just keep putting it off because of the wasted time. Naturally, that also means no buying if I'm not searching.

The sellers are wondering why their numbers have gone through the floor? The new search...

eBay: How much revenue do you have to lose before you correct the problems? We've shown you where they are.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous. I do one search, click the link. Do a completely different search 2 minutes later where that item also shows up and it doesn't have the "visited" link color. Considering that my searches come up with hundreds of VALID items, not having them show correctly is unusable.

This needs to get fixed ASAP. I can't take much more of this. I haven't bought anything in a couple weeks now and I've spent way too much time just to not buy anything.

Ebay is run by nothing but IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will continue to screw up the site until it becomes TOTALLY UNUSABLE by both buyer and seller. Then my almost worthless ebay stock will in fact be totally worthless, just like the idiots running the company. I'll be damned if I'll keep looking at the same items over and over because the links won't stay highlighted. FIX IT, YOU IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It willl never be fixed.

why ?

advertisement $$$$

Ads are now embedded with the search.

Everytime you will do a new search, the URL link is never be the same, the ads are refreshed everytime you click !

No ads = no $$$$ for ebay

Dohanue wants ebay to be like "Costco"...big sellers infront....small mom 'n pop aren't welcome anymore.

The flea market felling is gone

Hallelujah, the problem has been fixed! All my previously viewed links are now highlighted. I'm crossing my fingers that this is not a temporary fluke!
