Agreed. All of the auction sites are a joke. That includes Ebay.
Ebay is not convenient. It's a hassle.
Most people can get to the stores that sell Ebay things for less than it would cost to ship and they can buy multiple items while they are out so the gas argument doesn't work.
The prices for new items on Ebay are not any better than the stores around me and I can make instant returns or exchanges.
The correct response would be people are broke and Ebay is a bad place to shop.
There are alot of free shipping deals on company owned websites like Walmart.com, TRU.com and any other corporate website. Free shipping on Ebay depends on the seller and sellers cannot afford to offer free shipping. Ebay is taking chunks of the profit already.
Ebay has a HUGE problem with shill bidders/bid pushers. Ebay doesn't seem to mind. Higher bids = more money for Ebay.

i JUST HAVE TO GET THIS OFF OF MY CHEST. I GIVE DETAILED DISCRIPTIONS AND MEASUREMENTS. MANY PHOTOS AND MY SELLER DASHBOARD SAYS DOES NOT GIVE AN ACCURATE DISCRIPTION. I AM TRYING TO HELP MY CUSTOMERS BY GIVING THEM ALL THE INFORMATION AND THEY USE IT TO SAY I DO NOT GIVE ACCURATE DISCRIPTIONS. THANK YOU FROM DONNA MAE ROBINSON ID

The reason sales are down is because the word is out. It appears that after our economy (U.S.) went down the toilet and Obama bailed out all the crappy banks etc., new sellers decided ebay was the place to sell defective junk. This year alone I got ripped on 5 motherboards and two computers. Some sellers now wont ship an item if the winning bid was too low. Things on ebay are worse than ever by far. I have been shafted out of $400 by ebay/paypal . ebay needs to have a system in place to protect against "shill" bidding. Shill bidding is when the seller or an agent acting on the sellers behalf bids up an item. This is a federal violation (ebay sells across state lines). I cant make it anymore dealing with ebay.

At least in part, you are not getting any questions as eBay somehow has dropped out the 'Ask Seller a Question' on listings. If I have any questions as a Buyer, I pass on that auction.

You might ask eBay why the 'Ask Seller a Question' option on listings has somehow managed to disappear!

I for one won't bid anything if I cannot ask questions, and I think other potential buyers feel the same way. If eBay was a fair business, it would/should return the listing fees on all auctions that did not include an option for asking questions.

Does eBay REALLY expect a buyer to purchase something sight unseen and no questions asked? I think not.

Our sales started going down in August. We were selling our products 3 times a week but since August we are lucky to sell something once a month. We've been wondering what is wrong also. We sell sanitizer/cleaner for frozen drink/dessert machines and sanitary lubricant for these machines. So it's not a "I would like to have item" it's a "need item". Is it a combination of ebay's changes and the ecomomy? We were wondering if it was us or was everyone on ebay experiencing the same thing. We really needed the extra cash this was bringing in. We have posted on another auction site this week, we'll see what happens

Most of the overseas shipping was knocked out by the post office 3 years ago with that major increase.

Then ebay comes up with the idea that power sellers will pay less for their listings and get better exposure. That came with the big dsr's attitude they fondle.

I decided at that time I am not going to be a slave for ebay, paypal and the post office.

I only list very occasionally when I am curious about an item and only as an auction. If it gets any worse I will stop even doing that.

Since it's a need item, could it be that some of your customers would have discontinued using their machine (less demand for the product: frozen desserts/drinks are not really a "need item"), or some of them might have gone out altogether of business? Hope things get better!

I too have experienced a decrease in sales as well as interest in some of my items. It's obviously due to the recession in general, many people are cutting back including ebay buyers. The best thing to do is keep trying and, like many of you, hope that perhaps in the future there will be a better venue than ebay to sell our wares. Good luck to all!

These forums enable eBayers to vent their frustrations: they are safety valves. We vent our gripes and go on selling and buying as before. Puffs of steam get blown and eBay keeps on making money as usual.

eBay is now a multinational megacorporation, with a minimum of $8.541 billion in yearly revenue. The list of countries where eBay is implanted is awsome: India (population: 1.2 billion), Indonesia (pop. 230 milions), etc..
The US is now only a small part of the big picture.
See:
Link

eBay's power and momentum are such that it can now do exactly how it pleases, whenever it pleases. eBay's gravy train is not going to stop for any one of us, for any thousands of us, nor for any tens of thousands... For the hundreds few who'll fall by the wayside, thousands more will jump in.

With Capitalism comes Freedom of choice:

eBay rules... we leave or oBey.
Our choice.

The CEO did state during an interview on NBC's financial channel that 50% of their revenue came from outside the US.

Another factor that surely doesn't help sales is when it is impossible to ask a meaningful question to the seller.

I went to the following auction:
INDIA 1948 1st Flight Bombay to London First Day Cover

Now, I already have several (a dozen) of this specific type of covers and I am now only looking for certain numbers to create series. There were over 1800 such envelopes produced in 1948 by an Indian philatelic merchant. The numbers being on the back of the cover, it is not shown on that picture. If I do not know that number I am absolutely bidding blind.

The questions I can ask are all preprogrammed, no other question is possible. Well, I'm not going to bid "in the dark".

This kind of extreme control smothers the bidding process.
Everybody loses.

Sales are down the most I have seen in my nearly 10 years as an Ebay seller with most at the Power Seller level. There are many different opinions as to why sales are at possibly the lowest point ever on Ebay. Ebay does not seem to be concerned, leaving us sellers to fend for ourselves. Ebay does offer some extremely useful selling tools, but of course with extra fees. An example: why do we have to pay a "fee per click" for an enhanced search service that will help generate more sales resulting in more fees for bay? Ebay should provide this service free for both our and their benefit. They don't seem to understand that the more they promote their sellers and the more FREE sales assistance they provide, the greater our sales will be, thus more fees paid to Ebay and PayPal. Unfortunately, the free services they presently offer, do little towards increasing sales.

It would be extremely helpful to sellers if Ebay would provide ( without charging us for the service) useful information on an ongoing basis such as:

(1) Average Ebay sell -thru rate for each category
(2) Average domestic and international shipping & handling fees applied by sellers in each category
(3) Average selling price realized in each category, expressed in three sales ranges; low, medium and high end.

My firm belief is that if we all pull together, much can be accomplished, but it will be a long, uphill grind if Ebay does not come to the assistance of sellers in this extremely troubled economy.
