"Unhappy eBay Members Plan Global Boycott
Carrie-Ann Skinner, PC Advisor

Monday, April 21, 2008 8:04 AM PDT

EBay is facing a backlash from its users in the form of a global boycott on May 1.
Founded in 1995, eBay last year generated £3.8 billion (US$7.6 billion) in revenue. However, president and chief executive John Donahoe, who joined the company in March this year, has implemented a number of changes that have made users so disgruntled they have resorted to boycotting the service for one day.

Previously, sellers were able to leave comments about buyers. Under Donahoe's new rules, however, sellers can only leave positive but not negative or neutral feedback. Although some users are concerned that these changes will make it difficult to alert other users to fraudulent or malicious buyers, eBay claims it will make it easier for sellers to report 'bad' buyers and will remove unfair feedback.

And while users have seen listing fees reduced, the fee eBay charges on completion of a sale has risen to 7.25 percent of the total sale price, from 5.25 percent.

"We are a marketplace founded on trust. If people have a bad experience on our site, caused by a poor seller, then they will no longer use the site. The changes we announced recently are unashamedly focused on protecting buyers," an eBay spokesman said . "

Ive seen these stupid things before. No one will leave ebay. At least not enough to actually matter. If you think your 1-2k sales (number of sales)over the past couple of years means anything to ebay than your sadly mistaken. If you think that 5000 of you people with 1-2k sales means anything your sadly mistaken.

It comes down to one of two things. Quit bitching or leave. Either way ebay does not care.

Yea, we know why Yahoo failed. They decided that it would be much more profitable and cozy to cuddle up with e Bay.

Now... when potential buyers do a search for an item, (if they can even find what they're looking for with the new "best match"), they can be swayed by the big flashy banner from Yahoo stating "Click here and get this same item cheaper!".

So everybody gets paid but the sellers. Simply put: We pay to list items so Yahoo's "click" banners can take the buyer out of e Bay to make their purchase elsewhere.

It's much more profitable to let the sellers drive traffic to the click banners with the items they're selling. People click on the banners, and e Bay gets paid for the click , and Yahoo gets paid for the lead.

Great business for them... Bad business for us... We have to pay listing fees to generate leads for them.

Hmmm well if you would stop being so negative you would see the REAL reason yahoo auctions failed. There were no buyers. Items listed on yahoo did not sell. Why you ask? Because there was no paypal or equivalent integration. Quite simply people do not want to send checks or money orders to strange people 500 miles away. However with paypal they can pay instantly and know they are protected from fraud.

This is the reason alternate auction sites will fail as well. If you look at then there are items listed. But no or little buyers.

As for the ads placed on auctions, I do agree thats crap.

But the point still remains that without paypal an auction site must fail.

WeBidz.com us a great example. They have categories with 2-4k listings in them, and guess what ...... 95% of them have 0 bids.

"As for other auction sites, they will not do well, rember YAHOO auctions, it failed in the US. Can you guess why or do I need to tell you?"

and

"Items listed on yahoo did not sell. Why you ask? Because there was no paypal or equivalent integration."

Well, one thing is crystal clear... you never sold anything on Yahoo auctions before they retired (yes, that's right "retired", not "failed", after striking a deal with greedbay)... the reason I know you never sold on Yahoo auctions, is because I did, and had paypal (yuck) as a payment option in every ad.

Yahoo still has "Yahoo Shopping"... those are the ads you see plastered all over ebay in direct competition with ebay sellers' ads, the same ones that are posted on every ebay search results page now, just like buyernator said "It's much more profitable to let the sellers drive traffic to the click banners with the items they're selling. People click on the banners, and e Bay gets paid for the click , and Yahoo gets paid for the lead." Plus Yahoo makes a sale and the ebay seller gets screwed out of one.... do you see the money trail connection here?
(not that it matters, most ebay items don't even show in the fabulous "best match" search, so sadly ebay is just stealing the seller's listing fees from them)

I believe (even though I try to stay away from paypal as much as possible) that when you select what/where you're billing a customer for/from, Yahoo is even still an option... don't quote me on that though, as it may have changed by now and as I mentioned I try not to frequent anything that is "ebay" these days.

I did leave, as far as selling on this site, but will never stop helping others to make the best move of their lives too :)

Thousands, upon thousands of sellers have left ebay and they (the ebay execs) do feel it, otherwise they wouldn't be filing suit against little old craigslist, whining like the bratty, selfish children that they are, just because CL kicks their disrespective buttskis in the classified sector of the internet... they're not happy with their 28%, they want it ALL!!!

Typical and pretty much predictable for the gluttonous, greedy monsters.

I hope Craig and Jim mop the latrine floor with them.

Hi something4all and buyernator! :-D

My 2 cents for the week... have a great one all! :-D

Oh... one last tidbit...

Another part of the deal Yahoo made w/greedbay... Yahoo had to close their free classified section as well, so they didn't directly compete with ebay's flop of a classified site... whose name I won't even mention, because they're a joke and another huge reason ebay is attacking Craigs.

Very informative, thanks for all the good info, YAHOO was a bad example it seems, I did try and sell on yahoo a few times but nothing ever sold. I dont rember paypal being an option but i may be wrong, The point still stands though that other auction sites will have a very hard time without a paypal like integration.

I am only boycotting Ebay's Feedback. I disagree with the new FB rules that will be placed on May 1.

So far there are just as many new listings started within the past 24 hours that end well after May1. Are sellers listing as much as possible then stopping after the date?

:) hello hello shire.... it's me "sum"... been thinking about ya... well made it through yet another heart attack plus... i'm shooting for the Guiness book of records... but i'll admit... the pain is a son of gun...
My trust in hospitals is about equal to that of ebay...
a real joke... i wounldn't have gone to the hospital.. (waited a few weeks).. but the pain was too much to handle..and the jaw ache was making it hard to hear.. i finally gave in.. - took an aspriin and a nitro (which hasn't worked in yrs) and a plavix... before i went.. but didn't matter... they wanted to hit our insurance co for their $75 aspirin, and $60 for the nitro... only to lay on a gurney in the hallway of a private hospital that deals with heart.. they have all my records.. that's why i went there...
what a joke... I've got stronger pain meds at home and what they gave me had the effects of baby aspirin..

I'm now convinced a heart attack will not kill a person.. it's the hospital bill that will... rofl.
they thought they'd convince me into get those icd and pacemaker implants... not a shot in u know where.. I did my homework... NEVER... qulaity of life is gone once yo get the double pack.. between getting debfibed.. and not being able because the numbers were set right...
I'm leavig this earth with what i came in with.. plus the 6 stents...
good to see ya shire... I hear everyone jumped ship and ran to ola - i hardly recognize anybody here...
how's your toys? lol

treasured (sum). Good to hear from you! You must be heading for the record books! In my rural area of Wisconsin I've never seen anyone with that many! Must be your constitution keeping you going! Hope your recovery goes well.

I suppose most people have just left to a number of sites. I wish them well. But I keep checking those other places out and just see so little with minimal activity. I know my "toys" aren't over there.
