It is creepy.
Pictures of the dead go for big money on Ebay, though.. or they used to.
Postcards, photographs.. egad. I want to remember my loved ones alive, not cold, stiff and with makeup on.

I think it's very odd.

But my grandparents generation seemed to practice this. They have photographs of all my great-aunts / uncles in their coffins with rest of the siblings gathered around, solemnly posing in the picture....

I know it's more common with older people. And it was almost routinely done a couple of centuries ago, especially when a child died, because the family often didn't have any other photograph of that child. It just seems odd today....I can't imagine wanting to look at that picture later.

Back in those days -- my grandparents generation -- the only pics they had of their parents were in thier coffins. Taking pictures just wasn't that common, and was the last and only chance some people had, just like with kids.

It is creepy, though. I saw a pic of my own great grandmother in her coffin -- she died at 28, and it was just like looking at myself at the time.

My Kentucky granny had a very formal organ in her parlor. It had various niches on the back and each was filled with the picture of a dead relative, dead.

teach, did you just attend such a funeral? I'm curious why you began this thread?

Thanks,

Yes, Lynn, I did. I don't want to go into detail, but I was just very surprised when I saw someone take a picture of the deceased.

Teach, I didn't read all the responses and can't answer for anybody else, but...

My mother died 2+ years ago of COPD generally, and emphysema, specifically. Since 2004 she'd been on oxygen 24/7, even though she was actually diagnosed in 1984 and kept it a secret. In fact, she worked sooooooo hard to keep that secret that she never saw another doctor until 2004.

Mom was 74yo when she died, but looked at least a 100 years old, due to ill health. She weighed maybe 70-couple pounds; we'd been told that all the calories she took in was going towards the effort to breathe. I'm just explainin', sorry it's so long.

Anyway, the funeral home did such a wonderful job of making Mom beautiful that that IS the picture I try and carry in my heart. Nobody thought then of taking a picture, but ever since we've all said how sorry we didn't.

The new thing nowadays is to have the funeral videotaped. I can understand it on the one hand -- the family is too grief-stricken to really pay attention to the service and can watch it later when they can take it in better -- but on the other hand...who wants to watch a funeral over and over?

I come from a "don't look at the dead -- heck, the dead guy doesn't even get to come to the memorial service" kind of family. DH is Catholic. I haven't been to any funerals for his family yet, but I'm not looking forward to the whole viewing stuff when those days come along. Dead folks don't bother me, but I don't know why anyone would want to put a loved one "on display," so to speak. I've told DH that under no circumstances am I to be at my own service.

I was with two of my grandparents when they died. I can't remember what my grandfather looked like at that moment, because he really just seemed to have gone to sleep. My grandmother, however, looked awful, because for some unknown reason the nurses in the hospital had stuck in her bottom denture and she looked like a bulldog. I remember that as clearly as if it was yesterday. I sure don't need a picture for that to be burned into my head. Yuck.

Thanks for the reply, Nature. I guess I've never seen anyone look good enough that I wanted to remember it.

I remember people asking my mother why she had my dad's glasses put on him at his funeral, because he didn't "sleep" wearing them. True, but no one ever saw him without them, either. I mean, it's not like we bury people in their pajamas, even though they "sleep" that way (although I think I should be, cuz they're my favorite clothes). :)

I have a lot of pictures of relatives in their coffins. It was very common in my grandparent's culture as was an open casket that was opened yet again for viewing at the gravesite.

At the turn of the century it was quite common to photograph the dead and especially the children who died at an alarming rate.

I really do believe generations before us were more in touch with death and treated it with more respect.

Zoy, we already talked about circumstances a hundred years ago. And obviously I'm talking about an open coffin. But I'm asking about today. Have you ever taken a picture of a dead person in a coffin?
