The Official Elmo Live Thread

For those of you who have secured an Elmo Live...Congradulation! I have baught more than 1.

We must act now. We must come together. This is the year of Elmo. We need to make the market strong for Elmo. TMX was oversaturated on eBay. Chances are...this Elmo will be plentiful on ebay too.

Elmo started strong last time. He was selling for $200+ the first few weeks. Then the market bombed. Why? People tried to outdo eachother and capture the market with lower prices.

We must agree to create a strong elmo market. We must agree that Elmo is worth $150 or more.

Dont settle. Make the market strong all season.

I think there’s a term for what you're suggesting…oh yea…Price Fixing! It's illegal. I’ll pass…good luck!

That maybe so on the primary retail market. Ebay is not a primary retail market. It is secondary. It is an auction. This means people have a choice to bid or not.

I will take a snippit from that wikepedia article: "Under U.S. law, price fixing is only illegal if it is intentional and comes about via communication or agreement between firms or individuals. It is not illegal for a firm to copy the price movements of a de facto market leader called price leadership, which has been seen to be the case in markets for breakfast cereals and cigarettes."

We are not going to agree to price fix. We will agree to copy each other's prices without and verbal or written communication.

Did you unintentionally communicate to other individuals?

Price fixing or no price fixing, here's what cracks me up about all of these "we must act as one" threads.

Suppose every single person who procured one of these things decided to sell it on eBay. Suppose they all decided to sell for the same BIN of, oh I don't know, three times retail.

Now, never in a million years will my last two sentences ever happen, but hey, I'll play. Suppose they do. What happens? Why a few sellers will get their price. Most will be sitting around going "Gee that was a stupid idea."

Toys (even HOT HOT HOT TOYS!!!) are not food, gas or water. They are subject to the rules of economics and artificial price manipulation ain't one of the rules.

Actually, I really don't care if everyone decides to price Elmo at the same price. I just feel sorry for all those little pre-schoolers who will be crying uncontrollably Christmas morning because Santa could not afford Elmo Live.

I'm all for free enterprise, but I think all the greediness around the Christmas Holiday is pretty low.

I have a theory. I think this stuff primarily sells to resellers until the last layer of them is left holding the bag.

I have preschoolers. They and their peers lose interest playing with these Elmo type toys within about a minute and a half.

Agreed with Cocky, the kids lose interest in 5 minutes. We just unearthed the Elmo that falls over and laughs and such. His batteries were so dead that he made crazy moaning sounds and moved all crazy like, THAT was the most fun my kids have had with it.I still haven't changed the batteries^^

cocky_cpa & lickcheez you are 100% on the money. My kids play with boxes and little twist-tie thingies, the toys are discarded.

I just found the OP’s overzealous excitement about the prospect of making a few extra bucks humorous.

Has anyone ever used one of the "hot" Christmas toys for a fundraiser? I pre-ordered 2. 1 Elmo I plan to donate for to raise some funds for a local organization to purchase a particular item. Figured maybe I could sell the 2nd. one here, to make just enough profit to pay for the donated one.

I'd prefer not to run the fundraiser auction here because then Missionfish gets their cut of the money & I'd rather see it all go to the organization.

Wondering if anyone else ever tried using "whatever the hot toy" for that year was in a raffle or silent auction type of fundraiser & how it worked out?

Avoid the Elmo fraud, buy them a big container of Lego, it never goes out of style, you can add to it as they get older and it grows with them, it doesn't require batteries, makes them use their own imagination, and when they are done with it you can save it for the grandkids or sell it on e-bay and get a hunk of your money back. I have a ten year old and he has never fallen on the floor crying because I could not find a certain toy. Sounds like some parents need to do a little more parenting and a little less spoiling. And yes, I sell hot toys at Christmas, and no, I am not effected by the poor little Johnny stories.

SILENT AUCTION: HI, I run our schools chinese raffle every year at the holiday festival. I donated the year before last a TMX elmo to raffle off and it was a huge hit! Brought in lots of tickets and made it fun! . I had to buy it off ebay when prices were high though to secure it, i won the auction where someone was selling it for like only $60 to the person with the best story of its use. Last year i wanted to donate a WII, that i buoght retail but wanted the organization to go in on it with me and they were afraid to put out the money.. Darn shame it would have brought people to the event.. IM in real estate also and wanted to advertise they could win a wii if they bought with mee! but thats illegal in real estate.. now i see blockbuster and car dealers doing it...
