I won't make any Wii predictions for this year just yet, but the new Star Wars game will be a good tell.
It's on multiple platforms, but the Wii version uses the motion control for force and lightsaber powers. I think it's due out in September.
That, if the motion controls are good, could be enough to make Wii the front-runner for a 3rd year. In addition to the usual crowd who like it (pretty much everybody), this might push the undecided into finally taking the leap.
Additional games that utilize the Wii controls well may also push it. Consider that the Wii has defied expectations 2 years running, and that when more than half the games are ports with abysmal tacked-on motion controls.
There's a bit of anti-wii bias in the game development industry (lazy hacks!) but I think this year they'll finally start to clue in that the money to be made is with the system working it's way into every nook and cranny.
I, personally, am extraordinarily impressed with the quality of the Wii controls. Far better than I had expected for the first big experiment in this style of gaming. The only failure currently is in the game development side of things.
A few good, strong titles with well-designed interfaces... yeah, that could definitely boost Wii sales again.
So at this point my Wii advice is to keep an eye on upcoming releases. The bulk of the 1st-tier purchases are done now after 2 years so the third year will be software-driven. It might also be an idea to consider making hot game picks and getting one to package with the Wii to boost sell-thru.
That way somebody, say, convinced that the new Star Wars game is enough to take the plunge might be more likely to go after the package. Use your own discretion, I don't sell 'em so don't necessarily take my word on it. It's just a thought put out there.
Anyway, hope people selling the Wii this year make out well again. Best of luck.
