Re: TA vs. auction houses
May 13, 2012 01:01 PM

I have to agree with you 100% on this post!  From personal experience... I recently bought a "lot" of 600 Disney pins at an auction house for about $2000 (so lets say the original owner made about $1700 after fees taken out) .... i took those pins home and sold them on Ebay for about $7000!  if that owner had originally contracted a TA to sell them and split 50/50 he would have ended up with about $3500!!!

Plain and simple rodgers? I'm not knocking it so please don't take my curiosity as such, just never seen it done this way before.

There is a one time $20.00 set up fee any job of 10 items or more.

Fees:
•35% on items from $1.00 to $99.00
•30% on items from $100.00 to $499.00
•25% on items from $500.00 and up.

Terms & Conditions:
Listing fees will be the sole responsibility of the client. At the time of pick-up of your items or our meeting to discuss you items we will give an outline of these fees, which are, but not limited to the following:
•Listing Fees
•Buy it Now Fees
•Final Value Fees (once an items is Sold)
•PayPal Fees

No doubt you let them know by the time all those fees are factored in they will paying close to 50% if not more with the $20.00 set up fee. I've never heard of a set up fee before so that is a new one on me. The question I get asked is, "well exactly how much will I get when it sells?" When you answer them how do you estimate the percentage if/when you have charged the set up fee? I'm interested in how you explain it to your consignors since they don't understand the process much anyway.

Thanks

Great thread with good info. Thanks to you guys for writing so much because I've learned a lot just from reading.

I'm going to be starting an ebay business soon focused on consignments.

I'm going to start by selling my business to local churches to help them raise money. Church members will donate goods to the church which I will sell on its behalf.

This will also help me get much needed experience before I approach retail stores.

Because they are non-profit, I would think my 50% fee should be that much of a debate with them.

Have any of you TA's started out in your business by working the non-profit sector?

thanks

Re: How much should I charge to sell items for people?

We have worked with non-profits.

Our service involved two different models.

One was setting them up in mission fish and helping them run a fund-raising program in which people from home (all around the world as well as local)  can list items to ebay and using the ebay giving works program allocate all or part of the sale to the non-profit. We listed items locally for the people that did not do ebay but had items to donate.

We also have listed items for a charity that was not registered with mission fish and handled all the listing and payments like what you described.

You have more control over your commissions with the second example. We charged a service fee for the first option rather than figure out commissions on items we did not get a direct payment for.

Depending on the size of the campaign will determine which model is best for your non-profit you are working with.

Also, working with non-profits is an awesome way to market your services to those individuals and businesses that may want to use your services in a non-charity capacity!

I won't repost all I've had to say about listing for non-profits on this board because of time constraints. Search non-profits on this board domigaonline and glean even more useful advice. As the former manager of a 501c3 thrift store I can tell you it can possibly be a full time job for you if you have someone sorting that knows the junk from the good stuff. The income potential is through the roof if you have good people in there helping you find the money making items.

I wish you overwhelming success in your new venture and abundant blessing for your willingness to help a non-profit organization. These days they sure do need it.

I've been thinking about renting a store front in town and selling items, clothes and collectibles.  Would this be a good idea?  I've only been able to find info regarding what TA's are charging...not much information about the results of building an online store.  I would any suggestions and.or opinions.  Thanks! 50% sounds pretty dead on. If you sell an item for some one, no matter what it is, for say $100. Just the Ebay and paypal fees alone will exceed $20 easily. Even at $20, you the seller, are left with only a $30 profit after you give your customer $50. And you still have to take the time (and maybe money), to ship it out, on top of the time you took to list it.

So when all is said and done, for every $100 worth of merch you sell, your take is realisticly only going to profit about $25. Ebay and paypal get $25 and your customer gets $50.

If someone was going to hand me fifty cents on the dollar, and I don't have to do anything for it but give him my item to sell, i'd be ok with that.

Re: How much should I charge to sell items for people?

I would suggest a model that takes your % off the sell price & passes the fees along to your consignor out of whats left.

If you include it in your commission % you will see your commissions dwindle as ebay raises thier prices. Your only option then is to keep raising your prices. Consignors dont like that and that is a lot of paperwork and possibly advertising to redo your prices over and over.

A % plus fees allows your % to stay steady and you can them just blame the lower payout on ebays fee increases.

Just something to think about!

I list items on EBay, Craigslist, Amazon, local classifieds and local marketing areas for many people. My seller accounts range from 8K to 50+ sales. I am discusted by 50% charges. The idea of theft is the first to come to mind. I charge a 25% of sale price fee.

My clients are responsible for associated fees including Pay Pal fees. I work alone, extensivly research, describe correctly, appropriatly catagorize and accept responsibility for returns via description flaws. Funny thing is, I've NEVER had a problem because I am FAIR AND HONEST. I work when I want to, make an average of $300+ A DAY. One of my recent sales, i spent 13 hours researching and listing. at 25% I profited $525 for my efforts. I will  take $40+/hour any day. Good luck with your ventures, and do what you think will keep you in business. This business is VERY easy, and requires as much work as you feel like putting into it.

$100 sale lets get crazy and add $20 for shipping. $120 is our final value fee. Ebay fees are 9% = $11.80. The buyer pays via Pay Pal, $120. PP fees are .30 + 3% = $3.60.

TOTAL ASSOCIATED FEES = $15.40

Where do you get "exceed $20.00 easily?

@ 50% covering fees Co. makes $34.60 for an hour work, and the client makes $50 for their property being sold.

@ 25% client covers fees Co. makes $25 for an hour work, and the client makes $59.60 for their property being sold.                                 Do you see much difference?  NO, unless the client is carged fees with 50%, but in that case why even pay the client?

Re: How much should I charge to sell items for people?

I do this almost as a hobby but have a number of clients including a large vintage consignment store. Right now I charge 30% plus Ebay and Paypal fees. I also charge the client if there are shipping overages but we try hard not to have those. The reason for the overages was that I was getting free business space from a local postal agency (not a post office) who did the shipping. That is the only reason they gave me free space and their shipping was expensive. Now I'm moving into another space where I can charge regular Ebay shipping so I hope those overages will go away.  I am thinking about raising my rates on a sliding scale for outside clients (not the store) depending on the selling price.  I'm in between the locations right now, moving my stuff! So I have a little time to consider it.

What works for one may not work for another. If you work from home, alone, making $25/hour may work for you and allow you charge less commissions to acheive that number.

Some work from a retail store with overhead. Rent, insurance, utilities, property taxes, advertising, payroll, etc........The owner pay comes AFTER you cover all the expenses. So some may have to charge more or have a sliding scale based on sale price. As well as a minimum value for items accepted for consignment.

There is no one answer for everyone.   But the cool part is you can run the numbers in advance and at least know what you need to charge and what volume you need to do per week to meet your goals.

I don't know if this was discussed in earlier posts because I didn't read all of them, but I will be selling items on ebay for an antique dealer. The thing is, I will be using their ebay account, not my own,  and no ebay or paypal fees will be coming out of my pocket.  I work in the same building as them so I will have to stay late or come in on weekends to post the items.  I also live an hour away from work.  What should I charge for listing these items? I am not an employee of the antique dealer.  Should I charge a percentage of the sale price of the item or a flat fee?

There is no "right answer" to your question.....

Whatever is comfortable between you and person you are selling them for. Do the math.

What is the average price of item you are selling? What is average amount of time it takes you the handle a listing? How much do you need to make to make it worth your time? Are you selling by auction or just listing items to a store for BIN's? If all BIN's then how do you know how many items will sell in any week?

You just dont want to end up working 40 hours a week for $50 a week, right? We dont know if you are selling $20 items or $2000 items. So we cant give you a pat answer. But assume that the items will vary in value. Then you have to find an answer to cover it all so you dont short change yourself.

Maybe come up with a flat per hour fee and a small % of sales for a productivity incentive.

Re: How much should I charge to sell items for people?

I try to keep it simple:

In my consignment agreement I list that I charge 50% of final selling price and 3 dollars to list each item.  I pay ALL fees out of that and pay for all shipping materials out of that.

If I know a customer has a HOT item that will sell, I don't charge any listing fees and red line that clause in the agreement.

If I go to a customer's house and they have junk, the 3 dollar listing fee per item serves as a deterent to have me sell and I do that intentionally.  It ends up being a polite way of not consigning for someone with items I won't make money on.

Re: How much should I charge to sell items for people?

Hi there.

So to sell items for other people sounds like a lot of work. So let me get this right, you would take the photos of the items for the client then you would upload all the photos,

write a description answer all questions from potential buyers then once item has sold you would also look at wrapping it and shipping it?

Wow that's a massive amount of work just imagine if you had 10 on the go at the same time that would do your head in but also great for you as you will be making a significant amount of money.

So I think 50% is a fair price no matter what anyone says. If you sold an item say a camera that's worth $100 then you will I'm sure the client will be happy with $50.00 it's easy money for them and you did all the work..

It is a lot of work; more than what most people realize.  For me, what I include in that 50% is;

  • I pay all listing fees for each item
  • I pay all final value fees for each item
  • I pay all PayPal fees for each item
  • I photograph every item
  • I write the listing text for every item
  • I clean each item to prep for sale
  • My mileage to meet with you, pick up items, mail items
  • Shipping materials for each item (boxes, bags, printer labels and ink, printer paper for invoices and packing slips, shipping tape, etc.)
  • My time tracking your sales documentation, invoices, etc.
  • I pay all income and sales taxes on your items

So, in short, I feel I earn that 50% fairly.
