Leaving feedback for a CRAPPY SELLER. Opinions, please.

Nov 5, 2009 9:08 AM
Hubby bought a hardcover, five volume set of Civil War books. They arrived today. Each book was wrapped in a piece of tissue and the entire lot was placed in a trash bag. The box had an inch of air around the books. There was a tear in the side and the single piece of tape on the bottom was almost off. I put my finger in the tear and easily tore the box open. Miraculously, the books were not damaged.

I am thinking leaving a nuetral with a 3 out of 5 for S&H. Too harsh?
As sellers, we work hard for our feedback and packaging can be the most important part of some items. I admit to being a stickler about it.
What do you think????? Ann

2. packaging can be the most important part of some items.

So what you are saying is you bought an item that arrived undamaged but you feel you should hold the seller to your standards that could not have changed the arrived condition?

Sorry… can’t hear you over how awesome i am.

Your right, you are full of yourself. A legend in your own mind! And what cracks me up is what your buyers have to say about your packaging!

Arrive with piece broken off wood box though.
Arrived with brokenoff lid. Two box packing but not bubble.

What do I think? Mabe you don't want to know the truth as you're so awsome you wouldn't hear it....

WOW Ann, looks like you got the brunt of someone's bad day and/or bad attitude. First, ignore the rude poster since he OBVIOUSLY has a problem and needed to hide behind his computer and take shots at someone he doesn't even know.

With that said, if the books arrived as the seller described them in the listing I would leave positive. Had they arrived damaged that would be a different matter but fortunately they are O-K.

As for DSR stars if the description, communication, ship time and cost were accurate then why ding the seller? It's tough enough dealing with the flaming hoops greedbay makes a seller jump through so cut the guy/gal some slack on this one. :-x I would send them a message, one busy seller to another letting them know I was unhappy with their packaging and suggest nicely they may want to put future items in a box so buyers who are hateful and rude won't neg them over something as simple to do as proper packaging.

That's what I think B-) Hug my furry man Huckleberry for me please :-x

Wow. That was odd. 2 thoughts-I will bet this was the seller on another ID and we rarely get trolls under the bridge here in TA land.
Anyhow, I rarely leave anything but poz, but hubby was FURIOUS. The post office clerk already had the claim taped to the box when she handed it to me at the window.
Books are very delicate and need padding.
I will leave poz and five stars.

Sorry you got the brunt of someone's bad attitude!

I agree that sellers should be more responsible in their packing. However you have 2 things against you:
1. It arrived in good shape
2. There is NOT a DSR category for packing

It sounds like you really don't have any recourse, but I do suggest sending an email to the seller. They might not realize the importance of packing right.

This is one thing (of many) that irritates me with the DSRs - no category for packing. You can be held accountable for shipping time, which is not really in your control, but who cares how it was packed. One of the many things eBay doesn't think fully through....

In some instances it is. If a seller takes a week or more to ship or states they are mailing priority, but ship another way, that impacts shipping time. But I agree that a seller should not be penalized for delays caused by the USPS or other carrier.

Of course, the books were not damaged, but shipping and handling charges do cover packaging. Handling charges are included to allow a seller to pack to avoid possible damage to the items being shipped.

In this situation, I would have probably not left any feedback or if I left feedback, not left any star ratings.

I weanied out and left poz with 5 stars. I left a kind email about the packaging.
Personally, I hope the seller appreciates how lucky he was that the books were't damaged.
DH and I treasure our books.
Thanks, Ann

PS All of you that sent me kind, helpful info I will mail out a ghost beanie. Just kidding.

WOW ANN! So sorry you had to take that crap from a newbie! NE Chileman...this is a very close knit, friendly group here...if you are hoping to be welcome on this board, you're going to have to find a more diplomatic way to get your message across :O

Too bad you didn't get that the caption goes to the dog, not the OP...you almost had me agreeing with you until you pulled that tangent in.

Kim...PUULLEEEEEESE dear, do NOT give Down-a-hole and company any ideas ]:) Heck, I think they look for newer, more challenging flaming hoops to make sellers jump through with one hand tied behind their back while blindfolded and in leg shackles so let's not give them any ideas on another flaming hoop they can put before us..O-K? :-p

It is a good point though and as arnoldtrading pointed out the cost should be covered in the handling fee. I think Ann handled it wisely by emailing the seller. If he/she doesn't take heed then their stars will tell the tale soon enough.

Ann,

Arrrgh... If you have already left him the poz then what is done is done, however this is a time I am going to side with you and disagree with Kim, Arnold and the spaz who left post number 2...

Lets say you order a pizza. The pizza guy speeds crazily to your house, cutting off people and running red lights. He also threw it into his car on top of a bunch of open chemical bottles and knives. From his nutty driving the pizza box was tattered and ripped. He then delivers it and miraculously, the pizza made it ok. Is that acceptable?

NO!!!!

The pizza boy has created HUGE liability for his company, and jeopardized the product. The notion of the pizza arriving safely was luck, and not a characteristic of following the proper and socially acceptable way of delivering said pizza.

In this case, the person created huge liability and did not at all process the order how people expect.

Bottom line, is that if you pack an item like the one you received 100 times, how many do you think would genuinely have some damage? Probably 95 out of 100? You probably got lucky, real lucky there was no damage. You should be killing the feedback, because he took no care for items that were important to you, and on the flip side a seller doesn't deserve 5 star positive because of pure luck, cause it sure sounds like they didn't do anything to earn it. Just my thoughts. Jason

As a buyer Ann, had you known it was going to arrive in that condition, would you have bid anyway?

I bet not.

Would you buy from this seller again?

I bet not.

They say for every 1 person that speaks up, there are ten that don't.

You took a bad deed and did some good with it by alerting them about the arrived condition of the packaging. If those folks are not hobby sellers and depended on it for their bread and butter, then even better.

I'd agree with the idea that this is such a rough rough venue to work all things considered, that the less pain we create for each other the better.

I don't know what their feedback count is, or what the real details are about. We could pretend all day and night -

Maybe it wasn't the original seller, maybe they weren't even the one that prepared the package - stuff like that happens...we all have real lives and things that go wrong. Maybe it was a family member stepping in and trying to help...

I think because we come at it from a business angle, we think business all the time.

eBay still has the Mom & Pop kitchen table going on, and this was probably a very human mistake from some very small hobby sellers.

There is no excuse for taking a moment out to rant and rave at a person asking a question.

Chili, consider yourself spanked and go to your room. Don't you come out of there until you can act right either.

In spite of all the above conjecture and what if scenarios the item arrived unscathed even though the package took quite a beating. We have all had packages that we know were packaged very well arrive damaged and/or the contents destroyed. Fortunately for you Ann luck counts and the books are as promised in the description :)

I would hope as a newbie or seasoned seller if a buyer had issues with my service they would be kind enough to contact me to share their concerns prior to leaving FB or star ratings. I have a sentence on my packing slips and a message in my shipped item emails asking them to do just that giving me a chance to correct any errors or issues they have with any aspect of their transaction. It's called customer service ;) and so far I've been able to make them happy and welcomed their thoughts on what they thought I should have done differently with their item. I've done this on all my selling ID's here and on other venues and so far (fingers crossed) that has worked well for me.

Slash and burn or take no prisoners feels good when we are dishing it out on someone else but some times it helps to know the other person's side of the story before we crucify them. At least I keep having to remind myself of this as I transact business on the mine field called eBay ;)

{{SHUDDER}} I hate fire.
The answer is complicated. This seller has been on Ebay 4 years with a 150 feedback, mostly buying. Not experienced. Again, how would they know if I didn't say anything.
Great thread. Well almost...
Love to most, Ann
