Trading Assistant name... time for a change???

Mar 13, 2008 2:49 PM
I too dislike the name "Trading Assistant."

I hated the old "Trading Post" name which conjured up thoughts of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and beaver pelts.

Who uses the word "trading" in everyday conversation?

I'm an eBay Consignment Seller. I know we all have favorite terms, but one can see when observing the many off-topic posts we get on this board that even eBay members don't understand "Trading Assistant".

Why should anyone understand the term or terminology - eBay has not explained it anywhere but here. And only people who have actively sought out the information have been presented with it.

Trading Assistant name... time for a change???

I have used eBay Selling Assistant, eBay Selling Consultant but I like eBay Broker - really that is what we are brokers of merchandise - but with all the regulations going on with the word auction I may have to get a stock broker license and study for my series 7 exam to do that...???

Hey - anyone wanna trade? I'll be happy to assist you! :)

Yes, the term Trading Assistant is pretty much outlandish. Trying to explain that to customers is sometimes a challenge, since no one really knows what it means.

On my listings I've entirely removed the "A" word and substituted it with other terms. In the last paragraph on the pages I had previously termed myself to be an Auction Broker - I've recently changed that to read "Consignment Broker".

Oh the joys of words! One will never really know what is "politically correct" or not. Similar to "Happy Holidays" vs. "Merry Christmas". :^O

I have used 'online auction selling assistant' - mainly because it tells them exactly what it is, and you may sell for them in more venues than just ebay (etsy, craigslist, wagglepop, half.com and more). Doesnt tie you down to just ebay.

Trading Assistant name... time for a change???

When I first began - every time I said the words "trading assistant" the person I was speaking to would say "a what?". So I started using "eBay Selling Assistant", "eBay Auction Services", etc.

I now advertise myself as offering "consignment services" because i'm not planning on focusing on eBay any longer. I am opening up my B&M to offer consignment/estate sale services as well.

Providing Auction & Consignment Services.

I like "Selling Assistant" best more several reasons.

It avoids the word Auction, which eBay trys to make us avoid using. The title also doesn't limit us in our services, meaning we could sell using any service, method or venue available and the name still works.

The phrase "Consignment Seller" also works but I think more people have a more negative view of that term vs. "Selling Assistant". By more negative, I mean many people may relate it to only B&M Shops and automatically assume high commissions and/or cheaper items (ie. lothing). JMHO - Dave

Ouch, that hurt! Brings back old memories. But where do we go from here?

Maybe add it on to the thread "Ideas To Improve The Program - Sharon's Request"?:

I don't like the term Assistant. It lacks something and does not sound like that person is a professional. Assistant sounds like an underling or someone beneath someone.

eBay Consignment Specialist. I think that says it all. Everyone understands what consignment means...it automatically defines the relationship between consignor and TA, and specialist...well, the education specialist program uses the word...why not us?

How about: "eBay Selling Specialist"?

Consignment Specialist surely is the right direction, however many people could confuse that with merely having to do with B&M.

Maybe then even: "eBay Consignment Specialist" would do the trick?
