Gamecube component cable- why so expensive?

Over $100 BIN (excluding that one $12 auction showing composite video cable and description mentioning AV not YPbPr by either ignorant seller or delibrately misleading seller)

One would think all these sellers are selling "Monster" branded component cables.

Seriously, why ovver $100 for a bunch of 10-year old copper wires? I'd probably get better price if I hacked my GC and replaced the dumb propriety port with standard RCA ports and use a run of the mill $5 cables from monoprice.  10 minutes that saves me 90%- beat that little lizard!!!

:O wow! good question?   doesnt make any sense,

people still play those??  lol

a better question is why would you want it?  cost far out weighs any benefit.

I'd invest that hundo into a new system that provides HD. ;)

Ignorance is bliss

component cables were not standard with gamecubes, so theres a much more limited market on them, just get the composite cable the difference isn't very big on the GC(or any nintendo system for that matter).. to note the same composite cable works for SNES, N64, and GC.. not sure on the Wii because I never got one.

Because  the component video encoder chip is IN the cable. You won't get 480p output any other way. No way to hack it, and it's a Nintendo proprietary chip so no one else can make it.

It's also rare because it was only sold in limited quantities in Nintendo's online store at a time when component video wasn't that common.

Also the guy above me that said the quality difference isn't too big is clueless. Most Gamecube games output 480p, which is twice the image information of 480i.

This had one manufacturer, sold in a limited number of countries, and wad discontinued long before the console's lifespan ended.

So you're also competing with overseas bidders. GC component cables weren't sold in Europe, Australia, or various other places.

The technical anwser is Gamecube outputs digital video and audio, true to that proprietary port's name. Which Nintendo never released any digital cable to use. Instead they made GC component cables turn video into analog, ignoring the audio.

It's the same with a lot of things that aren't sold much when they first come out, then later everyone wants one. Remember when Nintendo redesigned the NES as a top loader? They only sold it for a short time, so it became rare. Even more recently they released the Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii, but since it was a compilation of already-released games they didn't make a ton of them, so now you pay a high price to get a copy. Anything made in limited quantities has the potential to have a high price tag at some point.

If I may point out, the Wii is almost at the end of its life, the point being is that you could get a wii and component cable for fairly cheap, specially the older wiis that has full GC software compatibility (ones with GC pad ports) correct me if I’m wrong, but the wii can output to component this also includes GC games running at 480P

Ok, so here's the main reason--the Gameboy Player adapter.  This is the most current retail hardware means of playing the entire GB/GB color/GBA libraries using GC controllers with TV output.  There is no adapter for the Wii for this, so the GC is it, and those cables provide the best resolution for those large game libraries.  Otherwise, you'd just play GC games on the Wii and use Wii cables.  Of course there are other tweaks and methods, but this is non emulator or hack speak.

I see plenty in NEW packaging, which tells me this isn't a supply/demand thing, it's price gouging and "what the market will bear."  They'll probably get cheaper.
