Help with information on 18K gold Wilka Swiss watch. Age? History? TIA
Jul 23, 2012 05:12 AM

I am trying to find out anything about the Wilka or Lily Watch Co.  The watch has both names on the 17 jewel movement.   Any information as to age, quality, or company history would be greatly appreciated.  Yes it does work.  The movement reads LILY WATCH CO. 17 JEWELS 2ADJUSTMENTS 2 POSITIONS WILKA WATCH FY SWITZERLAND.  There are no serial numbers or other markings on the movement.  The case is marked 18K and S over C inside a G. Lightly etched into the inside of the case is 89067, MZ48 and EV39. Thank you for looking.

Typical 1920s generic Swiss watch.  During this time period, the case, movement and dial were typically made by separate manufacturers and then assembled by the watchmaker shops who sold them.  As you can see from plain dial, it wasn't marketed under any brand name.

Doubtful you'll find anything about the Wilka name as they were just a small movement manufacturer.  One of thousands of small manufacturers in this cottage industry that went defunct over the years.  The "CS" is the maker's mark from the case manufacturer.... also unlikely to have survived over the years or be known.

Thanks for the information. I was afraid it would be hard to identify, but knowing the age helps.

being 18K gold it has scrap value.

if working, the nice High Art Deco case could add a few bucks to the scrap value

looks late 1920 - early 1930's to me;

Not 1930s.  Definitely 1920s and early 1920s at that.  The large rectangular cases with so-called "exploding dial" numbers (numbers are distorted as if through a fish eye lens) came in use in the very late teens.... 1919-ish and were in style for a decade or so.  After that, typical cases started changing shape for more of a baguette style and some fancier shapes.

You can see the case trends if you study vintage watch ads.  There are also several books out such as "Vintage Ladies Wrist Watches 1912-1936 Art Deco,etc." published in 2008 by Lillian Lieb-Meyer which is an assembled catelog of old vintage ads for reference.
