Repair Shop In response to Daphne's request for new sidebar topics, I propose that we start a Repair Shop thread. I restore silver, brass and other metals for a living. I have a friend who cleans and repairs oil paintings. Ten years ago we started a club for people who restore fine objects and within a year we'd met quite a few (27) very interesting people - many of whom lived too far from Orlando to come meet with us, and all of whom were too busy to run a growing club. We don't meet...

I have three small bowls, measuring 5 1/4". The pattern is "Willow." It's exotic, like some of the patterns on older transferware I sold a while back (and will be selling again soon). potteries.org identifies this mark as being used from 1929 - 1942. But I'm wondering what we might learn from the green mark/symbol above it, and also from the impressed numbers. They're slightly different on all three: 1 over 28, 2 over 28 & 3 over 28. Here's an example (2 over 28): Thanks!

I posted this thread the other day and inadvertently included a link to a website where this artist's paintings are for sale, and Ebay quickly pulled the posting. The following discussion and pictures are SOLELY for the purpose of introducing my friends here to the oeuvre of a talented man. I don't own any of his paintings, and I have no financial interest whatsoever in this post. I have a favorite new artist, and he's from Oklahoma! I love it when someone helps dispel popular...

What is your view when you see an item listed as 18th century that is actuall 20th century, and other such misrepresentations ? Do you think this is simply a lack of knowledge on the part of the seller or a deliberate deception to fool the gullible ? Is there a reporting mechanism or some kind of arbitration as I see so many deceptions that it is beyond a joke. I'm genuinely interested as I believe there should be some safeguards for the unwary.

I have a Tea Caddy I'm doing research on. On the bottom it has the initials I.F.S. and a Hand holding a Hammer above the initials. What I have found is that this is the mark for Israel Freeman & Sons of England but, right below that is stamped Made in Italy? The Tea Caddy also has a Lion standing on it's back legs holding a Crown in its right paw on the hinged lid. Was there an I.F.S. in Italy?Strive for the Ideal but, Deal with the Real.

Hi, I just want to make sure that the metal is brass. I am not great at determining metals, so just wanted to be sure before I list. Also, do you think this would be considered Arts and Crafts? It sure has all the bells and whistles to make it appear so. I feel that it is very old, but maybe someone may argue that point, so I would be more comfortable if someone who has more knowledge could help me out. Any ideas of country of origin, value, age, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so...

Some people have mentioned that they miss the old art appreciation thread so this is an attempt to resurrect it. Rather than rehash what has been done, I hope this thread will be a continuation of the original thread. For those not familiar with the thread, if you search Art Appreciation 101 you will find the archive for awhile yet. While the original thread was titled as a class might be, I did not intend for it to be a class. The hope was that this would be a place where art could be...

Not to start another war question here, I have these cabinet cards that I would to enjoy learning a little more about. it only took a week to figure out where they've been hiding among the other stuff. The first one with the man standing in back, he is here in other pictures with his civil war uniform on. These first 2 look like hunting camping correct? I have 2 of this one and don't have the knowledge if this subject matter is wanted to collectors. there's a stove pipe coming out of the...

I was wearing this brooch one day and when I got home, noticed the front legs of the dog had broken off. Of course they were irretrievably lost. Is there any reason someone would broken bakelite? Also, the round yellow part looks different somehow. Does anyone ever paint this stuff? Any comments welcome!

I found this funky fish xmas ornament in a lot of vintage ornaments I purchased at an estate sale. It is very thin and fragile plastic (?). Its about 3" long. It has rhinestone eyes, sequins and faded tinsel fin. What is it? Is it some kind of folk art? How would you describe it? Link Link Link Link Click to visit my store

I have an antique (late 1960's) brass ships clock and barometer set. They were made by the "Time and Tide Company" 1967 from Miami, Fl. My Grandmother actually bought them from a jeweler in Massachusetts in the late 60's and said they were quite pricey back then. I still have the original box that they came in and also the instruction booklet. The clock is swiss and the barometer is German. (that's what it says on the back of them) The clock says 13 jewel time and tide inc. The barometer...

I ran across this pair of what I assume are salts in a local estate I bought earlier this year. Since then I’ve been trying, off and on, to find out who made them and when. I’m also curious as to the identity of the lad whose portrait is on each. Each is a total of 2” tall, the bowls each being 2 ½” in diameter. At first, I didn’t even notice the “eagle” below the lad’s chin. The only other marks, other than a monogram, are a “260” on the bottom of one and “261”...

DH came home with this honker. I couldn't find it on Replacements (no R and B tureens listed at all). It's about 10 inches tall, 11 inches from handle to handle. I assume most silverplate isn't worth much but am hoping this might be an exception. R and B seems to have a long history. Any chance that this is older? ~Judy~

I picked this up at a yard sale last summer. I though it was neat mostly because of the brass(?) case it came in. The figure is about 1" tall and the case top slides down over the bottom so that it fits the figure snugly. Any comments? TIA
