Repair Shop In response to Daphne's request for new sidebar topics, I propose that we start a Repair Shop thread. I restore silver, brass and other metals for a living. I have a friend who cleans and repairs oil paintings. Ten years ago we started a club for people who restore fine objects and within a year we'd met quite a few (27) very interesting people - many of whom lived too far from Orlando to come meet with us, and all of whom were too busy to run a growing club. We don't meet...

Well, I just need to get this off my chest, cry for a few moments, and then get on with my life.... About 3-4 years ago I attended an auction where I purchased a large, pulled loop ruby colored glass vase for about $50.00. I thought it was a fabulous vase. The bottom had an old piece of masking tape identifying it as Vineland Glass, NJ 1900. I tried the glass board to get a positive ID, and no response. Usually the glass board can ID almost anything so I was surprised no one recognized...

This is not really my sort of thing, it came in with some Edwardian greeting cards in it, but I was wondering if there was any market for this sort of thing, and opinions on how old it is. I'm guessing 1950 or so from the style, but it could be earlier. It is about 6 by 4 by 3 inches, and looks a bit greener in real life.In fact. if you mentally replace blue with dull green you have just about got it . I know it says 'World Famous' but I doubt if they were world...

Local school thing. I knew I was going and knew I would spend money. The pickings were very slim. I bid on and won these. 3 cups and saucers each marked differently on the bottom 2 with crossed arrows (Arnart?)one with numbers only. 2 lily vases both marked "MA". 1 little poppy cup marked "Italy" If it looks like something other than junque, I'll post on PGP. Patty Oh! and Happy Thanksgiving!

I've got the old perfume bottle from my grandfather and beside the bottle show "Prastara" made in poland so I listed it yesterday but today i've got the message from one of the buyer that "Prastara" is the trademark of his company in USA and tell me that I have to cancel the item immediately. Now I cancel this item already for that buyer because i know just a little about perfume but I really want to know about my item ! ! ! Because I'm really sure this perfume bottle is not a fake one...

I cannot find any documentation on this piece by 1847 Rogers Bros. The pattern is Heraldic. Bakelite knob on the lid and handles. Mint condition. Hammered with a very high shine. I know it's supposed to be plated, but it looks & feels like sterling, though not marked sterling or 925. It is 12" across including the handles. It is stunning. Does anyone have any info on this piece? Thanks!

Some people have mentioned that they miss the old art appreciation thread so this is an attempt to resurrect it. Rather than rehash what has been done, I hope this thread will be a continuation of the original thread. For those not familiar with the thread, if you search Art Appreciation 101 you will find the archive for awhile yet. While the original thread was titled as a class might be, I did not intend for it to be a class. The hope was that this would be a place where art could be...

Hello! I am trying to confirm, get additional info on these beautiful candelabras, and hopefully list them. I am trying to sell these for some friends and this is what I have been told: They are handmade, from the 1700s, they are french baroque, brass gilded and there are no stampings whatsoever from what I could tell. Can anybody confirm this, or add, and is there any other places we should be looking for stampings or markings?? Your help is greatly appreciated!! Eva...

A friend of mine wants me to sell two old American primitive type portraits that are from around 1830 or so. They are both off their frames, and the frames are very unattractive and basically trash. I know good antiqure frames and these are basically just basic wood that's badly damaged. They have hammered square-top nails in them and are fairly large, for pictures that are 26 1/2" by 22". I am thinking of selling the pictures on eBay but the frames really would be just a hassle...

Link Link Link Link Link This framed lithograph is in a 9 1/2" X 11 1/2" frame. The litho itself measures 5 7/8" X 8" and appears to be hand colored. Lithographer was Winkelmann & Son of Berlin. The scene is very similar to a Lerche oil sold by Christie's in 2007 titled "A Lapp family cooking dinner in a goahti, Lapland". There are slight differences between the oil and the litho. Questions: Worth eBaying? What's the title? (Please see last 2 links.) If...

These have a "clink" sound almost like pottery when tapped. Do they look like bakelite? I don't have anything handy to compare them too, and I know black bakelite is impossible to test with simichrome. At first glance, I didn't think they were, but now, maybe not sure. I've seen lots of deco chrome and bakelite here and there. I can't imagine what other material they would be. Somewhat cool to the touch, definitely not metal, not basalt or soapstone (I don't think) Help much...

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I really don't know too much about this kind of thing - but I have noticed that there is a similarity with items that sell for quite a tidy sum here on ebay. However, this one is unsigned. Does that make it worthless? Does anyone know how I can find out more about this or where I can ask?

Hi, I am trying to figure out the brand of this old hat. Does anyone recognize the brand? I have tried CB & Co and have not been able to find anything at all. Lot four charcoal sketches, possibly studies for murals and WPA (dated 1937 and 1938). As you can see, the images have that exaggerated look that at least I associate with that style, and since they go just about to the whole edge, mural studies seemed likely. Paper size is about 22x36 plus (I forgot to measure when I had them unrolled). Found in FL, but from auction in West Virginia. No other info -- seller couldn't make out sigs either. Tried searching on Kenneth, 1930s, mural,...

Below is a copy of a post I placed on the art discussion board. I am hoping for some helpful input there, but I am unfamiliar with that board. I know who knows their stuff and talks with a straight tongue on the antiques board, so I'd thought I'd post here, also. Let me start by stating I am not knowledgeable in art. This is an oil painting on canvas about 18" x 24". It is signed " G EARL ", and clearly in the style of the English painter George Earl. I know I have a long way to go...
