I just got back from the college library (where I work) and I had gotten some books for my daughter. Her aunt took her to the library yesterday and she got books suitable for an 8yo (which she is) but she read all 7 of them in one afternoon. She reads at a 5th-6th grade level and those were not challenging to her at all. So I got her some great books suitable for her reading level. I mentioned to one of my co-workers why I got them and she said "I never FORCE my children to read anything,...

Given the questions and concerns that I've seen here and there on the boards about moderation and Boards policy, I recently spent some time in a Q & A session. As this was an impromptu, informal gathering, it did not involve much prior notice. It was a productive conversation, but I think there are still some more questions and concerns that could be addressed. And I would like to open this up for additional input from those who weren't able to join us yesterday. To read the earlier...

Hi, Given that there has been a fair number of questions pertaining to which pink manages which board, I wanted to offer a quick clarification. In the past when the community was smaller than it is today, each board was managed by a particular Community Development pink (staff member). As the Community grew, this became less and less feasible. Although you may see posts from particular pinks, there is no longer a particular pink managing each board. We have continued to develop...

Hello everyone, I will be working with this board for awhile and wanted to know if any of you would be interested in using this space to host some structured book discussions. Some ideas I've been tossing about are: asking a member to provide a book review and invite comments, searching for authors to talk about their work or we could form book discussion groups. Basing the discussion groups on a common author, time period, genre' or question might be an interesting approach. Some...

Hi Everyone, Some news networks like CNN, the BBC, and NPR are reporting that unscrupulous online scammers are trying to take advantage of people's generous outpourings of help for Hurricane Katrina victims. We'd like to reiterate some basic tips to protect yourself from spoof (fake) email and web sites, especially those pretending to be eBay and PayPal, or well-known relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross. Please follow these tips to make sure that your contributions go...

Hello everyone, We've been hearing from folks who use the boards that the expectation of "courteous and respectful posting from all participants" needs more attention. We've been troubled for some time that this essential element seems to fall by the wayside too often. We should all be able to have a discussion without attack. Debate can be conducted without insult. Frustration can be expressed without personalization. Interpersonal issues need to be worked out privately between the...

For those of you who live or do business in areas that are affected by Hurricanes, there are a group of members on the Miscellaneous board who devote a huge amount of time and effort to keep others updated when a Hurricane is reported and may be a threat. Hurricane Dennis is the latest threat and there is information updated regularly in the thread. Link

Hello everyone, Recently, a new capability was added that enables members to store and use Signatures Files in their posts to the Discussion Boards. Members also use Signatures on the Chat Boards. We've created guidelines for these Signatures to enable members to achieve benefit from and enjoy them while keeping them appropriate for the boards, as they appear in every post made by those who use them. The guidelines will apply to signatures on both the Discussion Boards and the Chat...

We wanted to take a moment to update you about a change to how long you may stay signed in to the eBay Community Forums (such as the discussion boards, chat rooms, eBay Groups, or the Answer Center) without activity. After you sign in, if you are "inactive" or "idle" for roughly an hour, you will be automatically logged out. After being logged out, you'll still be able to view threads and read posts, but to post, report a post, or vote in a poll, you'll just have to sign in back again. This...

General Guidelines: 1 - Members need to adhere to existing Board Usage Policies except where these guidelines provide exceptions and additional clarification specific to Community projects. 2 - Threads dedicated to Community projects must adhere to the Boards and Groups Projects Guidelines. 3 - The activity within threads should be inclusive of all members, and content should be respectful of all members.
