Why is eBay penalizing sellers on the coasts?

I ship same or next day consistently - have for several years. I live on the West Coast, and my items are often too heavy or bulky to offer only Priority Mail.
A box of dishes weighing 12 pounds and over the 1 cubic foot size limit could easily cost $35-$40 to ship to Florida from WA. I can send the same package by UPS Ground for about $15.

Naturally, buyers opt for the slower cheaper method. A box sent out from the West Coast going to the East Coast on Monday is delivered generally on the following Monday - but that's NOT 4 business days.

So even though I offer a good value service - saving my buyer $20 or more - and even though I ship same or next day, I'm penalized BY EBAY for where I live.

And, when did eBay decide sellers are responsible for the carrier's time in transit?

I get hit on my DSR's from buyers that don;t understand the difference between when a seller ships and when a carrier delivers.

Now eBay furthers that misunderstanding.

Perhaps a better method of automatic five on shipping time would be either it arrives within four days or with proof that package was sent within one business day.

My PO does not scan upon receipt, which would be a problem as far as proving mailing date. But it usually would make it to the distribution center's scan in time. If it doesn't, I've got that other option of arriving in four days.

Neither option is perfect but at least there is a second way to get that automatic five stars.
================================

Di I will answer your question. Because eBay chooses to ignore the easily verifiable proof of the SELLER's shipping time. The seller could provide the tracking number and prove acceptance with the shipping service within 1 business day (or whatever is noted in the listing) and while it is easily verifiable online that yes indeed the seller shipped within 1 business day or as noted in the listing... ebay chooses to allow the restriction based on the SHIPPING service's shipping time, instead of letting buyers rate USPS, UPS, or FedEx directly... we get to bear the brunt for someone else's work that may or may not be performed perfectly to standard.

Speaking from the east coast.

A better question, maybe one that a non-seller could understand is... why are you not automatically 5-starring the shipping time when the seller proves they shipped it off within the appropriate time frame.

oH MY! PLEASE no automatic 1 stars....that may work for some folks, but not for everyone. I sell handpainted items, that require a lot more time. I try to use the ebay email system, but I often have to use regular email to communicate, since my messages can be longer than the number of characters allowed, and I have to send pictures. I certainly don't want to get dinged for my stars because I forgot to send a message through the ebay mail system, even though I've already sent several regular emails, and because I need more time to make my items than those folks who can just put an item in a box.

Also....why 4 days!? Holy guacamole....It wasn't that long ago when folks would buy something and be told to expect to receive it in 6-8 weeks, and nobody had a problem with that. I know times have changed, but my goodness, as a buyer I certainly can wait a week or two to get something in the mail before I even think about worrying about it.

Lest people here think this is sour grapes on my part, it isn't. I have a 5.0 in shipping time.

The point is, eBay is holding out a carrot that only SOME sellers are able to even reach for.

I ALWAYS offer Priority Mail in addition to a more economical service; and if requested, will ship by express, etc, if the buyer is in a real hurry.

I package securely, ship same or next day, and offer the buyer a choice of shipping services. Insurance is provided at no charge.

However, apparently, this does not meet the standard, simply because of my zip code.

So - why are sellers on the coasts being penalized????

Totally agree. The coast are totally being biased against with this feedback policy that eBay has instituted. My company has ALWAYS shipped out either same day or the next day after an item is ordered, but if I get TEN people out of ONE THOUSAND for the month that are unhappy that UPS Ground took 5 business days to get the item to New Jersey, then I lose my Top Seller status and my eBay fees discounts. How is this fair? What are the odds that I get 10 eBay customers out of 1000 that are totally clueless on how to accurately rate my company on the shipping time and only base my rating against some other eBay seller that got them their eBay purchase in 2 days since it was shipping in New Jersey.

This setup is VERY messed up!

Funny thing is eBay wants everything shipped out Priority Mail to get it to the customers quickly and THEN they also want us to sell everything with FREE shipping.

That may work for some items, but not many of the items that we sell.

Hello eBay,

Do I understand correctly that, in order to get the automatic 5 stars on shipping time, the seller must specify 1-day handling time? If we specify 2-day handling time, and the package gets to the buyer within 4 business days, we do not get the automatic 5-stars? Correct?

I'm trying to find out if I should always specify 1-day handling. In the past, I have specified 2 days, just in case a problem arose, though I always ship next business day (1 day).

Thank you.

How is charging my buyer $85 to ship a 45 pound, 24"x28"x10" package via Priority Mail, when I could charge them $15 to ship it via UPS, providing "the highest level of service to (my) buyer in California"?

I'm a buyer who lives in the northwest who also used to be an ebay seller. Asking packages to be delivered in 4 days is ridiculous. Ebay is promoting these want everything now buyers. Ebay will never be able to compete with Amazon, it's not fair to expect smaller sellers on the coast to be able to do that.

As a buyer, this is one more policy that will hurt buyers in the end. Just like all the other changes since 2008. As a former powerbuyer, I am not happy with Ebay railroading my smaller sellers out of business.

What about Canadian sellers that ship to the US? Our packages have to go through customs and Canada Post can take 8-14 business day. Are you telling me that I will never again receive a 5 stars on shipping because I am in Canada and the buyer is in the US?
Why would buyers want to purchase from me, even with the lowest price and free shipping, when it will take longer to receive their package then if they purchase from someone in the US?

Yes, the bar is tough as a coastal seller

Tough I can live with, this new rule (4 business days) is IMPOSSIBLE for those on the coasts that use UPS or FedEx due to size and weight of shipments.

UPS and FedEx both require 5 business days coast to coast.

For me, that is 4 or 5 states.

To me this is just another unfair rating based on "buyer feelings" not facts.

The seller does not deliver the item within 4 days. The carrier delivers the item within however many days it takes.
