Looks like an adult (father) giving a child (his son) a new toy which looks to be like a dish or something that spins or can balance on the string. My guess would be porcelain, but could be opaque glass?? Cool items. :)Wendy

JMHO. from the clothes and size of the persons, a dutch merchant inspecting a hornlike instrument and being offered a pot with those chinese mushrooms.

Do you have any worse pictures that you could post? Oops, I mean better. These look like panels that were removed from a screen. Could be authentic or could be repros. Your photos are killing you. At least take them outside and photograph them in natural light. And does your camera have a focus on it? Trying to help but can't get past your photos.

Sorry, the Chinese student couldn't make sense of it either. It might even be Japanese?

Yes, the script is Japanese and the people (at least the tall man) appears to be Dutch. ... he is carrying a fan .... a very Japanese motif.

I'd guess that these are the 17th century equivalent of postcards depicting Dutch "barbarians" in old Japan.

hmmm ... from the style of the engraving, I think the pics were done by a European hand, depicting the Dutch in old Japan.

the writing on the back looks like japanese script, but whether done by a japanese or by a European, I cannot be sure.

the treatment of the eyes of the characters seems oriental to me ... another nice puzzle.

Made in Japan ... depicting the southern barbarians ... maybe done by a Japanese hand or by a European who had lived for a long time in Japan.

I think they are old ... 17th or at most 18th century.

just my impressions and guesses. I like them anyway.

The decoration of these looks a lot like a class of Chinese Export Porcelain from about the 1730's to the 1750's. Paintings of Europeans on Chinese Export Porcelain has been popular for some time, and tends to be quite well painted, and potted, so therefore it is very expensive, and as a result has been faked with varying degrees of success. Whether something has a look of age or not, doesn't mean they are old, and it does seem odd that characters written on them would be in Japanese, not Chinese, unless the characters were added at some later point, but that would not be very likely to me, if they were period. If I had these plaques I would take them to an expert at a museum that has specialists in Asian Decorative Arts, or send the pictures to an good Auction House that has or uses specialists in Asian Decorative Arts.

Hi. I took better pics, including the silkscreens which are shown first. I did the best I could, checked my camera settings and it's raining hard so they are taken indoors. I believe the silkscreens could be as old as 16th 17th century. The more I look at the stones plaques, they are looking like either quartz or possibly white jade. I say quartz because they have that sparkly nature that quartz stones have. I thank everyone for their help and comments. This has been an interesting topic for me!

I posted this discussion on Asian Arts.com and hope to get a response there. If anyone has Asian antiques, it may be a good board to try!
