Art Appreciation .............. Revisited

Jun 13, 2009 11:23 PM
Some people have mentioned that they miss the old art appreciation thread so this is an attempt to resurrect it. Rather than rehash what has been done, I hope this thread will be a continuation of the original thread. For those not familiar with the thread, if you search Art Appreciation 101 you will find the archive for awhile yet.

While the original thread was titled as a class might be, I did not intend for it to be a class. The hope was that this would be a place where art could be shared and discussed from a personal point of view. If some learning took place as a result, all the better.

The following is directly from the original thread:

I think it would be interesting to get people views about individual artworks and insight into what they consider to be good art. What makes a work of art good? Is outside validation about taste important or is just liking something good enough? Let us know what motivates you when you buy art.

The personal nature of art is what this thread is about. If you have works of art that you have questions about, posting them in a separate thread might be best. If you want to share your finds and discuss your love of art, this is the place.........

Show us your art!

Brad! I'm heading to bed but I saw this and wanted to just say hello and ask how you've been? You have been missed on this board. Are you in a better place and will you be here more now?

If I have any expertise in art, it is in early to mid 20th century American art. I also approach art from an investment perspective and own far too many works to display at any one time. As such, my viewpoint is somewhat skewed. However, I only buy what I like and have gained an appreciation for various types of art over the years. Being an investor/dealer has expanded my appreciation for art, if not my expertise. I hope others with different interests will share what they know about art here. The one thing I find intriguing about art is that there is not one definitive opinion about it.........

This is a painting that has hung on my walls for many years. It is about 9 x 12, oil on board, and probably dates to the 30's or 40's. It is signed L. H. Burnes. I have not been able to find anything out about this artist. I owned another painting by this same artist in an identical frame that I did not like nearly as well. I sold it off a couple of years ago and, unfortunately, do not have a photo of it.

I like this painting for its use of color and for the suggestion of the unknown. I like the fact that the trees are not really the main subject of the painting. There is a path leading somewhere.............

I also like the frame quite a bit. Someone has painted the inner portion of the frame white and I hope to strip it back to its more subdued original color someday.

I was wrong......... I do have a photo of the companion piece. I also restored the frame back to the original color before selling. What do you think?

"Are you in a better place and will you be here more now?"

I, at least , am a bit more settled and organized. I have been here a few time a week and hope to be able to actively participate in this thread. This could all change if I buy a house and move again........ :O I really don't see this happening too soon at this point.

I also like the first piece, the path, better than the second. The shadows on the path are what catch my eye. I get the feeling the artist was a weekend painter, a skilled amateur.

Not to knock your piece Brad, but I also think this artist was a “Sunday painter.” It lacks any sense of convincing perspective especially in the foreground to middle distance. The artist also had problems understanding light and shadow. Cheers!

I didn't say this was great art..... LOL! I don't disagree with this analysis. I do find the first one to be pleasing in the composition and use of color. The second one is very run-of-the-mill. I bought these as much for the frames as for the paintings. Unfortunately, the frames are an odd size and I would never find better works to fit them.........

I believe I sold the second one for just under $100.00. This more than doubled my investment for the pair.

Yep, the one with the path is the better of the two, hands-down IMO. I like the frames...I think that may have to be a siggie for me, LOL! :)Wendy

We'll play!

Here are two recent YS finds. The first is medium sized and signed Paul Moro, who was a Poughkeepsie artist.

with flash since it shows the brush strokes:

Second, a little one. Not sure why DH wants your opinions on this one, but here goes:

Both of them seem to use two trees to draw the eye back to what is behind them. The "path" picture is drawing the eye down the path and back to the sort of meadow that is behind it. The "pond/lake" picture is using the two darker grey trees to frame the body of water back there.

I like the frames, too. In the photos it seems that the white paint on the one is imparting more of a sense of depth to the frame, so the picture recedes a bit more. It reminds me of some of those old frames that are made with deep sides to look more like a box. The original color of the frame does not have that same effect... of course, I'm only looking at photos so don't know whether in person this comes across at all.

About art interest and discussing love of art that Brad mentioned... I don't really collect art, but have read quite a bit about art history and love to go to art museums! I do like botanical prints and have a couple of "real" engravings, and several other later botanical prints. But I don't collect paintings. Any real paintings I may have around here just showed up, without being collected intentionally. :)

My post was about Brad's, not the ones posted by dcjunker... our posts overlapped!

Correction on Paul Moro, not Poughkeepsie, but Peekskill.
