Art Appreciation .............. Revisited

Jun 13, 2009 11:23 PM
Some people have mentioned that they miss the old art appreciation thread so this is an attempt to resurrect it. Rather than rehash what has been done, I hope this thread will be a continuation of the original thread. For those not familiar with the thread, if you search Art Appreciation 101 you will find the archive for awhile yet.

While the original thread was titled as a class might be, I did not intend for it to be a class. The hope was that this would be a place where art could be shared and discussed from a personal point of view. If some learning took place as a result, all the better.

The following is directly from the original thread:

I think it would be interesting to get people views about individual artworks and insight into what they consider to be good art. What makes a work of art good? Is outside validation about taste important or is just liking something good enough? Let us know what motivates you when you buy art.

The personal nature of art is what this thread is about. If you have works of art that you have questions about, posting them in a separate thread might be best. If you want to share your finds and discuss your love of art, this is the place.........

Show us your art!

dc, seems husband has a good eye. carl (karl) schultze might bring some broth on the table.
although it looks "near Stalingrad" it's not. :)

Fid, explain please! We couldn't find anything definite on Schultze there were a lot of them. We're not on art net or ask art so what you say is intriguing!

do you have your google settings to "english only" ? there's a few you easily find, some from german auction houses. just put it like that: "carl schultze".
not a fortune but he seems to bring over 500 $. not bad for a yardsale find.

Yes, I see!

We will be in Hamburg and Berlin in September, maybe we should bring it over! Ours is a little one, throw it in the bag. Thanks, Fid, don't mean to hijack the art appreciation thread.

Thanks for starting another thread, Brad.
I like the frames of the first two paintings.
*silly smiles*

Judy ~ I like the Moro one, how big is it? The slathering of the oil paint is lucious, the artist seems to have a good style going and he has good perspective too.

As for the snow painting, I think it's well done, what with the dirt shadows beneath the trees. I like the foreshortening from close up to the hilly woods line. I have somewhat a hard time "identifying" with snow paintings, not having much seen snow. The left hand side of the painting is boring by comparison to the right.

Judy, Glad to read it's worth something.

Thanks! :)

The Moro inside the frame is 15 x 11 1/2.

The Schultze is only about 8 x 11. DH doesn't think it's nearly of the value of those larger ones Fid found, but it's great to know that he was a recognized artist!

Personally, I like the red in the Moro, it looks great on our wall near a red box, I like the perspective and the bridge, you really feel as if you are inside the painting.

It does, Judy. That slurpy paint just sucks you right on in!
It's not that the perspective on the Moro painting is perfect, in fact, it's quite simply done, but it works for me too. If Moro is a prolific artist, I would think that this should be of some value (at least over time), especially in the locality. Both are keepers, imo.

DC, if you decide to sell #2, let me know

it very much reminds me of the somber beauty of how the lake ontario shore looks in winter. i grew up on lake ontario and my parents still live there...this really reminds me of that look

Johnjohn ~ I saw the George painting when it was up for sale here on ebay, and may have seen the others too. Did a family member (father?) paint these -- as I thought I read on the auctions?

Do you do artwork / painting too?

I like George; he looks like a weekend baseball player.

That Peekskill painting might bring some real money. It looks like something from the 1930s, and industrial mill town stuff from back the can be worth something. Add in the location right on top of West Point and New York and life could get interesting. The snow scene is more my speed though.

Ruth, thanks for mentioning the West Point connection! DH actually figured out the artist's signature by working backwards from McKellar's Mill (if I have that right). We were thinking it might be fun to see how much of that scene still exists. He did contact the main dealer in Moro a few weeks ago, but I think that person represents the Moro estate and wasn't interested in purchase. Since we like the painting we'll probably hold onto it as an "investment." The ones we were able to look up did sell in the thousands. (I am sure if someone offered us thousands we would rethink our position!) If anyone has an ask art or artnet subscription and can find out more for us we'd love to know more about price ranges for something like this. The Carl Schultze too, for that matter.

Judy, I think all those sites have trial offers -- I know I got a 14 day freebie once or twice maybe. Artnet I think. Take a look and see. Or save it for some time when you have a lot to check and do a marathon.

Here's my favorite of all times. Caution: Most people who see this absolutely hate it. No question. I love everything about it, even though it's not a skilled artist at all. Painted some time during WWII to 1950s, by a lady who was the wife of a diplomat. No one special. Oil on board. Poor frame. About 30x45". Needs to be dusted, I see.

To me it represent hope. Yearning. See the birds on the barbed wire? They're singing. See the eye in the bricks? I think that's what I love the most. Someone looking in, someone looking out? And of course, on the other side is whatever they're yearning for. Every time I look at it, something goes pitter patter inside. For the last 20 years. Not bad, eh?
