Art Appreciation .............. Revisited

Jun 13, 2009 11:23 PM
Some people have mentioned that they miss the old art appreciation thread so this is an attempt to resurrect it. Rather than rehash what has been done, I hope this thread will be a continuation of the original thread. For those not familiar with the thread, if you search Art Appreciation 101 you will find the archive for awhile yet.

While the original thread was titled as a class might be, I did not intend for it to be a class. The hope was that this would be a place where art could be shared and discussed from a personal point of view. If some learning took place as a result, all the better.

The following is directly from the original thread:

I think it would be interesting to get people views about individual artworks and insight into what they consider to be good art. What makes a work of art good? Is outside validation about taste important or is just liking something good enough? Let us know what motivates you when you buy art.

The personal nature of art is what this thread is about. If you have works of art that you have questions about, posting them in a separate thread might be best. If you want to share your finds and discuss your love of art, this is the place.........

Show us your art!

And away we go........ Glad to see people jumping in!

Judy,

I really like your yard sale finds. The Moro is right within my collecting tastes. It has a nice WPA feel to it. The other is just a nice accomplished landscape. These are the kinds of finds that keep us going.......

JohnJohn,

Didn't we discuss these paintings here at some point? I seem to recall that someone was able to find a little something out about the artist...... They have a nice quirky sense about them.

Birgittaw,

Art that can still give you a pitter-patter after 20 years is great! I see the appeal....... there is something about the unseen/implied in paintings that makes for engaging art.

"Any real paintings I may have around here just showed up, without being collected intentionally"

Ahhhh...... Be careful. That is how it starts. Someone gave me a work I admired and I happened to buy an old painting for a good price soon thereafter..... That was about 20 years ago. I now have a couple hundred works of art at any given time. At one point, I had over 30 paintings hanging in my living room alone.

Now thats interesting! I bought these at a thrift about 5 years ago and they were filthy and in deplorable condition,so I wonder if the one you saw is related? The only artwork anyone in my family created were beer can hats!

Yes sir,I did post them on here once in my quest for info,we ascertained they MIGHT be by a certain artist, but have been unable to confirm either way.I contacted a lady at the smithsonian and she felt it could possibly be by the artist george demetrios, who worked primarily in other mediums, but felt the siggie, while very similiar, just didnt feel 'right'. George has a date of 1942 on the back, and demetrios was a student of german expressionism so who knows.
Birgittaw,I adore you painting,so poignant!

One of my primary interests in collecting is of paintings of urban or industrial scenes. While I prefer paintings with some age, I will buy newer works if the price is right. This little painting is by a New Jersey artist by the name of Carol Haas and probably dates to the 1980's. I have not been able to track her down but can't say that I have tried too hard. The title is Mood City. I like this because it is a night scene and I think the title suits it well. I bought this on ebay for a song a few years ago.

Brad I am so glad you started this thread! Am enjoying the variety of art, especially love the "winter scene" painting.

I would like to share some artwork too, I will start with this "creepy, sad" piece. This one was sold to me in a dust-covered stack of art that was leaning up against a tree at an auction last fall. I was after another in the bunch and this came with it. At first, with the dust and dirt on it, I thought it was a bunch of gypsies or something holding a seance. I love to decorate for holidays and thought this would be great to display for Halloween. Later, when I wiped it off, I realized it was a family sitting at a table together....and for some reason I couldn't stop looking at it! It appears to be an older print on some kind of particle board?, no sig, just a copyright sign and "V.G." in the lower right corner. There is the word "Vincent" on the back of the man's chair. What's odd is, the print appears older, but the frame and paper backing looks newer, as if someone had it reframed. But why? Who would hang this in their home?

I often look at this picture, wondering who these people are, their ethnic background?, why they appear so sad, there is almost a creepyness about it but maybe that's because it's so dark. What I like is how the lighting is used, it was hard to capture in the photos but the picture looks different from various angles due to the lighting, also the depth looks different depending from which view you look at it.

Am wondering if anyone has any idea on the artist or any information about it. I know it's not expensive fancy art but for some reason it stirred my emotions so I find it interesting regardless. :)

Birgittaw ~ It's an expressive painting, size-wise too.
I can see why most viewers would either love it or not, however I am torn.
I think I can easily move off center and into the "love it" category.
=)

Ah, well perhaps I'm confusing Johnjohn's paintings via auction format - as to having seen them posted here. I know I've definitely seen them before, and that would make the most sense. I can look in my archives to see if I can find anything more, but I doubt it at this point.

Brad ~ Definitely a night "Mood Scene" what an exciting painting! I like industrial / urban works, but am picky about the genre, color and format. This has everything going for it. The amount of "abstract" is not overwhelming, the lights of the city are very well done and everything about the genre matches itself - if that makes sense.

Is it oil on canvas board? How big is it?

Thanks so much Wendy...Van Gogh!?!!? Obviously I have a LOT to learn about art, when I think Van Gogh I think "Sunflowers" and "Starry Night" (one of my all time favorites). I would never have guessed Van Gogh (or any famous artist for that matter) for this, though the "dark & a little creepy" does match some of his other work. And I guess it explains the "V.G." in the corner...LOL! You are all probably laughing at me! :( Can anyone recommend an on line "Art 101" class???

That's my favorite kind of image display/decorating! Do you have it similar to the way that museums used to hang paintings at all levels, covering the wall? Can you post a photo of your living room? I'm sure that lots of people here would be interested. :)

And I love that urban painting -- once upon a time I lived in Chicago and it reminds me of the cityscapes I loved.

Caroline-------No laughing here! I never had the opportunity to study art and I am clueless. Every piece of art that appears here helps me learn, so don't feel badly. We have to start somewhere...........
