Hello everyone, I will check in here daily also so if you have any questions about stoneware jugs, crock, or bottles I can try to help. My interest are mostly with New York stoneware but I do have books that cover most US pottery's.

I used to be a treasure hunter in the 80s searching for colonial and CW stuff in Virginia. When I excavated targeted areas, I found many old bottles but I never kept any of them because I thought they were junk. My regrets!

A big Welcome to all our stoneware and bottle collectors! I've linked to our Antiques sidebar and will also be doing so on Collectibles and Pottery & Glass. It would be lovely to get a good group together who share these interests.

Thanks so much, whiskey-klectr... lovely picture!!!

BERNHARD...it's not too late to start over...you remember where you were digging? Maybe you left some items behind that are collectible nowadays? I know many collectors are re-digging dumps that were 1st dug in the 1960's when the hobby was red hot & flourishing...they are finding some keepers and salables, too.

DAPHNE...thank YOU for the assistance on getting this forum going and for adding the additiuonal links...(((HUGS)))

I hope this is the right place to ask this. I have some old clay pots that have been in a barn.
I don't know any thing about them. Had one person tell their grandmother use to cook beans in them.
So I hope you can help. Thank you! Corrine

Well from looking at the bottom they don't look like anything made here in the states. My guess would be that they are redware cooking pots from Mexico or possibly a small chance they are indian made. Sorry I couldn't tell you more. Maybe someone else will come along and know more about them.

CORRINE...I know very little about pottery & stoneware, but will venture an opinion:::::they look to me like a hybrid copy of yellow ware and the more modern Hull utilitarian pottery...form is suggestive of 1940's or 1950's. Is that circular motif scratched in the glaze? And are those scuff marks on the sides where the glaze is gone? Is that kinda chalky there? If so,can't imagine anyone cooking in them as it would be too porous. As for glaze missing (if that's what it is),that couldn't happen on the older US made stoneware or pottery as the glaze is near impenetrable. Also, judging from the drippy-like effect of the glaze,I would guess it was a cheaply manufactured or rushed product. Have to concur with Judy probably Made in Mexico.

Thank you both for your help. The inside of these jugs are hard and very smooth. The outside it feels a little rough, the design that's on them is deep as several places that are rough the design is still there. Sure need cleaned. Neighbor said these were used in an open fire. I sure had no idea, but we aren't that far from Mexico. Thanks again for your help. Corrine
