I used to be a treasure hunter in the 80s searching for colonial and CW stuff in Virginia. When I excavated targeted areas, I found many old bottles but I never kept any of them because I thought they were junk. My regrets!

BERNHARD...it's not too late to start over...you remember where you were digging? Maybe you left some items behind that are collectible nowadays? I know many collectors are re-digging dumps that were 1st dug in the 1960's when the hobby was red hot & flourishing...they are finding some keepers and salables, too. DAPHNE...thank YOU for the assistance on getting this forum going and for adding the additiuonal links...(((HUGS)))

I hope this is the right place to ask this. I have some old clay pots that have been in a barn.
I don't know any thing about them. Had one person tell their grandmother use to cook beans in them.
So I hope you can help. Thank you! Corrine

Well from looking at the bottom they don't look like anything made here in the states. My guess would be that they are redware cooking pots from Mexico or possibly a small chance they are indian made. Sorry I couldn't tell you more. Maybe someone else will come along and know more about them. ~~~~Judy~~~~

CORRINE...I know very little about pottery & stoneware, but will venture an opinion:::::they look to me like a hybrid copy of yellow ware and the more modern Hull utilitarian pottery...form is suggestive of 1940's or 1950's. Is that circular motif scratched in the glaze? And are those scuff marks on the sides where the glaze is gone? Is that kinda chalky there? If so,can't imagine anyone cooking in them as it would be too porous. As for glaze missing (if that's what it is),that couldn't happen on the older US made stoneware or pottery as the glaze is near impenetrable. Also, judging from the drippy-like effect of the glaze,I would guess it was a cheaply manufactured or rushed product. Have to concur with Judy probably Made in Mexico.

Thank you both for your help. The inside of these jugs are hard and very smooth. The outside it feels a little rough, the design that's on them is deep as several places that are rough the design is still there. Sure need cleaned. Neighbor said these were used in an open fire. I sure had no idea, but we aren't that far from Mexico. Thanks again for your help. Corrine

Wow, whiskey klectr, you did it! Probably I don't belong here since you all know so much more about bottles and crocks than I do. I just know the basics. But I've been collecting whatever I could dig up for years, and then trying to learn about them. Nothing I have is as beautiful as yours. But I love the old medicine and food bottles best. I have one old jug, blue, stamped E.B. Taylor, Richmond, Va. that I found in a creek. It's probably the most valuable find I have. Just a small, rounded curve was sticking out of the water in the creek. I thought it was a turtle shell at first! I tell everybody I don't have a specialty area--I specialize in "whole"! I think this board is a fun idea. I, too, will be checking it out often. Thanks!

TONYLEE...you sure do belong here. This forum is for beginners as well as experienced collectors (and I use term "experienced", loosely,as no one person will able to absorb all the knowledge about bottles, jugs, etc.,especailly with new finds being reported almost weekly, new books,et al.) This forum is also for those just curious about our hobbies or maybe seeking help with IDing an object....so welcome TONYLEE...and don't be a stranger,ya hear...? Nice find on that jug,ya lucky rascal.I dug a hole you could put a car in only to find a local whiskey jug with a missing handle...LOL.

Well, thanks! I subscribed to the Antique Bottle Magazine for several years--now there were some experts. Like Digger and Granny Kath. Are you familiar with them? I could never learn that much! I have answered questions on the eBay boards before, but as I said, just easy basic ones. At least your jug was already missing a handle. When I was new to digging, I once got impatient and tried to yank a jug out of a clay bank by its handle. You KNOW what happened!

TONYLEE... musta been a while ago, as Granny Kath has departed this world of collectibles and Tom Caniff took over her column...or maybe Doug Leybourne...I get the two columnists and the two zines mixed up. I have met Digger before at several bottle shows...he's an alright & friendly guy. I imagine we've all broken something while digging...hard not to, being as we can't see what's there until we hit it. I've broken necks off when I got in a hurry and tried to pull the bottle from the hard-packed ground...stuck my probe through bottles...knocked the mouths off with my shovel...LOL. Sometimes it can be heart breaking, too.

JANET...I don't know much about your pots except they appear crude and early. F.& J.Heinz C0. was established in 1877. It became the H.J. Heinz Co. in 1888,so the one pot could date from the early days.Check back later as JUDY should have some additional input. TONYLEE...where you be?

dateline: Jonesborough,Tenn. beginning Jan 11 and running through Feb 16,there will be a display of DECKER POTTERY at the Visitor's Center. $5.00 admission adults. Students & seniors $3.00.
Charles E. Decker was born in Germany in 1832 and arrived in the US in 1848. In 1872 he purchased 100 acres of land on the Nolichucky River in Washington County,TN. here he began the manufacture of pottery. He operated as late as 1904 according to the article I have...probably longer.
Here's a pic of his Family & some of their wares in 1904...
DECKER FAMILY ...
and here is a pic of some of the wares...
DECKER POTTERY
I'll be going down there one day to look at the display (which collectors from throughout Southern Appalachia contributed to)...and I'll take some pics and maybe pick up some pamphlets or other informative materials...will post additional info here for you to browse at your leisure.
