Do you think it's worth it???

I talked to a lady today who wants to meet me tomorrow to sell me an international sterling flat ware set with 10 complete place settings and 2 serving spoons. She needs the money asap for her daughter's birthday, so she wants $100 for the whole set. So, do you think this would be a good resale investment? Is it worth what I would get out of the entire set vs. what I will be putting into it financially? Your advice is appreciated.

It depends on a number of things.

How many pieces does she consider a 'complete plate setting?' The more pieces, the more weight for a scrap sale, of course, but also the more possibilities for sale of individual 'replacement pieces.'

What pattern? Some are more desired than others.

What's the condition? Condition doesn't matter for scrap, but it would affect you potential for a higher than scrap resale of a popular pattern.

Well, I've looked them up online and I'm apprehensive because of the poor economy. I also still have to worry about the concern of her being a flake/ or assuming she could scam me because she thinks I will not know what I'm doing, but she sent me a photo and the case says International Sterling right on it. So, things look good so far. As far as I counted in the pic, there were 22pcs visible, and that's not counting that some are more than likely stacked underneath the others.

I'm bringing my body builder intimidating fiance with me incase this is one of those robbery attempts lol So?????

How did I miss Vitry's post? Strange things going on.

But that is a very interesting point. The "IS" mark on many of International's silverplate patterns could lead her to believe the set is sterling when it's not.

Just because the case says Sterling doesn't mean that's what's inside. ;)

I've seen all kinds of flatware in non-matching boxes.

It's possible she mistook it. Ironically, I recently bought a 15 pc set of International sterling (prelude pattern) flatware, so I'm hoping this is the same pattern.

Keep in mind that the blades on the knives are likely stainless, so they won't count in the scrap value.

Yeah, on the intl sterling I have, they say "sterling handle" and the blade is marked "stainless"

There certainly isn't 10 settings pictured

The color would make me suspect sterling

The plainish pattern suggests plate

I was just trying to estimate what's in the stacks and I agree with Terry. It certainly doesn't look like as many pieces as you might be lead to believe.
