Michael Jackson E.T. Shrink-Wrapped Album

Jun 27, 2009 11:11 AM
I am posting this inquiry on several Groups and Forums in an effort to determine the value of two significant pieces of rare Michael Jackson (R.I.P) memorabilia and where I might have one of them authenticated.

Back in 1982, Michael Jackson teamed with Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, and MCA Records to narrate an E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Storybook Album - a double-sided full-length 33 LP with a 20-page booklet and 22-inch square poster included within.

Since Michael Jackson was signed with Epic Records at that time, and since the storybook album was recorded on MCA Records, the album was considered a breach of contract and was pulled shortly after its release.

I possess two of those albums. One of them is in very good condition with pristine book and poster - and the other was never opened and is still in its original shrink-wrap packaging. Four questions:

1. Does anyone know of an appraiser or other expert within the Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland area who would be able to authenticate that the shrink-wrapping is indeed original (1982)?

2. What might be the estimated value of each of these albums?

3. Where might I find collectors who would be interested in the shrink-wrapped album?

4. From a value standpoint, would it be more appropriate to wait for a period of time in order to possibly increase its value and demand?

My daughter was a big fan and we have had these two albums for 27 years. I hope that someone else might now appreciate owning them as part of their collection and remembrance.

Any input that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

George

According to last night's sensational tv news, sales on ebay of MJ items were up 700% already.

I would list them to end Sunday evening, if I were you, Retirednavy.

Out of respect, I would wait until tomorrow before listing.

I don't think that I would try to find someone to authenticate that the shrink wrap is original. If you were the original purchaser you know that you can assure 100% that it is so.

My opinion is that the longer you put off selling the more of a chance that people are going to be "spent out" on his things and assumedly a relatively rare item such as yours might lose prospective buyers. Opinions may vary on this, it will be interesting to see.

I agree with Sal. Start your listing Sunday evening so it will end in 7 days on a Sunday night. (I always had good luck with Sunday evening listings.)

I have never once had any still sealed shrink wrapped record album "authenticated" as original shrink wrap. Never. I don't think you will have any problem with the fact that you've kept it in it's original wrapper.

Hey, if you have bills to pay you do what you have to. I'd hang on to it for another year, if possible; MJ stuff is going to have a spike right away, then fall off for a while before it comes back. It'll climb steadily after that, if it goes according to what has happened to other celebrity stuff.

To all that responded - I thank you very much. I realize that there isn't one best answer; yet you have given me good pros and cons - all worth taking to heart.

I had read earlier in collector guides that discerning collectors are often suspicious of scams where non-authentic items are sometimes later shrink-wrapped and passed off as original packaging; hence my question. I guess it would be just on a case-by-case basis on how it was sold and who would be buying it. But, with so many albums out there now (I hadn't realized that there were that many), it is probably a moot point.

There were a few responses from those who immediately called me a ghoul, grave robber and worse. I understand their viewpoint and perhaps my timing could have been better. But given the macabre media frenzy that has been underway from day one - and with USA Today hocking a quickly put-together booklet for $6.95 - perhaps my one question deserved some slack.

I respect Michael Jackson's talent; attended his Victory Concerts and am saddened by the loss of this fabulous entertainer. But I must advise that I have no debilitating emotional link to celebrities as some apparently do.

My question was about the value of an item; something I had intended to ask for years. It was a professional question placed in a forum of experts and professionals who might have reasoned answers to offer. For the most part, that is what I received. And I thank you all for your many valuable opinions and suggestions.

Yes, you are correct: every minute of the hour, every hour of the day, every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year, every year this decade, every decade this century, every century this millenium and on and on, somewhere, a person is dead...many thousands of people die every day.

Elvis is dead, too, as are many thousands of other celebrities whose memories are marketed in the form of memorabilia and other merchandise. To call for a moratorium on selling merchandise associated with any particular person is silly. There are many hundreds of websites, blogs, etc. dedicated to the purpose of mourning, moaning, pining, whining, whatever for the celebrity of choice. Meanwhile, eBay is a marketplace- that's its purpose. To confuse the purpose of the two venues is silly.
