need help indentifying figures

Nov 6, 2009 4:25 PM
I know these are not antique but someone on another board suggested to come here.
I do not know what type of material these are but they weigh 5 oz each and measure 9" tall. Feel like stone of some kind. I have had these for several years (bought from an estate sale) but have no info. There are no markings that I can find.

The sort of think you might buy at an African airport to use up your last few Kwacha, and take your mind off the man using a hammer to fix the plane.

My guess would be, made of ebony, African and tourist souvenirs.

Thanks for your help. I did not feel they were "special" but just wanted to know if anyone could give any info.
Thanks

Somebody has to put Af on a British chat show or something. His comedy needs a wider audience than us! Too funny, Af! :)Wendy

....except that it wasn't a joke, entirely. A piece just fell off an American 777 and landed in some poor sod's front yard on Long Island. It beats having it land on the house of course.

Like some other folks have already said, they appear to be African souvenirs made from ebony. A quick search for African folk art statues shows some similar ones in both current and completed listings. Try posting your original question in the art and artists forum. Maybe there is someone there who specializes in collecting or sale of these. They are pretty interesting so there is most likely a following somewhere.
