OT: How to post pictures directly in a thread
Dec 14, 2010 04:21 PM
I didn't realize I hadn't changed to Photobucket directions to reflect the changes they just made so I'm reporting the other thread and posting the updated instructions here. My instructions are for Photobucket and Tinypic. If anyone else has ones for different photo hosts and different browsers please post them! Main thing to remember when posting photos is they need to be no bigger than around 640 X 480, which is a resize option on the two hosts below. Photos need to be CLEAR AND BRIGHT AND CLOSEUP!!! I can't stress that strongly enough. If you can't clearly see the details then try getting a better picture. Details are important. How something is made can provide huge amounts of information to the experts here. Also if there are any makers marks get clear, close up pictures. If you can't get a clear pictures of any marks try either scanning the mark or taking a rubbing with a thin piece of paper and a pencil lead. If all else fails try your hand at drawing it and taking a photo of your drawing. BOTTOMS ARE IMPORTANT!!! This is especially true for pottery and glass! Straight on pictures are a must! The top instructions are for Tinypic and below them are instructions for Photobucket. This is in Windows Explorer, I don't know the other browsers commands. 1. First thing is to open the thread you want to post pictures in. You will be leaving this open the whole time. 2. Type in your text, then space down (using the RETURN key) twice. If you want to title each picture then go ahead and type that now and space down (RETURN key) twice again. 3. Open a new browser window and use that one to go to Tinypic. You can only upload one picture at a time on Tinypic, which is why you need a separate browser window for it. Just a warning, anyone can change your picture in Tinypic, it is not protected in anyway. If you think someone might cause problems then use Photobucket and set the privacy setting so no one can copy, comment or follow you. http://tinypic.com 4. The main things you are looking for on the Tinypic front page are the “BROWSE” button, the “RESIZE” menu and the “UPLOAD” button. 5. Use the “BROWSE” button to find the picture you want. Left click on it to bring it into the “BROWSE” box. 6. Scroll down to the “RESIZE” menu and select “Message Board 640 X 480). 7. Click on “UPLOAD NOW” and type the text at the prompt. 8. When the picture is finished uploading you will see four boxes with URLs in them, you want the FIRST BOX with ------->HTML FOR WEBSITES<---------. LEFT CLICK in the box with the URL and it should turn black. Once it turns black RIGHT CLICK and click on COPY. You should now have the URL copied to Notepad. 9. Open your thread. Make sure the cursor is blinking where you want the picture to go. Right click in the text box of the thread and when the menu comes up click on “PASTE”. This should paste the URL into the thread. Space down twice (with the RETURN key) if you wish to add more text or pictures. 10. You will need to repeat steps 4 through 9 for EVERY picture you want to post. 11. Once you have all your text written and URL’s pasted, then scroll down to the “PREVIEW” button. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!!!! Click on the “PREVIEW” button and check your post to insure that it is the way you want it. You can always click on the “EDIT” button to go back and fix problems. 12. Once you have everything the way you want it, then click on the “POST MESSAGE” button and it should post exactly the way you saw it in “PREVIEW”. These instructions are for Photobucket. If you do not have a Photobucket account, go to the link and sign up for the free one. http://photobucket.com/ 1. You will see a large green button titled “Select Images and Videos”. Below the area with all the social networking places (Facebook, et. al.) there is tiny little blue print that says "Customize your upload options", click on this. This will bring up a menu. You want to set your "Resize my photos to this size" to 640X480. Make sure you SAVE this change. This will cause all photos you upload to automatically be sized to 640X480, which is a good size for the boards. 2. Click on the “Select Images and Videos” button and it should bring up a screen of various locations on your computer. For Microsoft 7, you’ll click on Libraries, Pictures and the folder where you have the pictures. Double click on the picture you wish to upload and it should automatically start to load. If you have more than one picture you want to upload, then hold down the "CTRL" button as you click on them. Once you have finished selecting all the pictures you want to upload, click on "Open" and they should start uploading. Once it’s finished uploading I suggest you at least give each picture a title, it makes it easier to quickly find them later. Once you’ve done that look down and to the right and you'll see "Save and continue to my Album", click on this to save the pictures. 3. When the picture(s) is(are) finished uploading put your mouse cursor over the picture you want to post in the thread, a box will pop up with two URL's, you need the FIRST URL in the---> “HTML for Websites”<---- window. LEFT CLICK in the window showing the URL and a "copied" should pop up. You now have the URL copied to Notepad. 4. Go to the thread that you want to put the pictures in and type in your text. After you have typed your text then space down TWICE and right click. Click on “Paste” and it should paste the code into the thread. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each photo you wish to post, making sure you space down at least TWICE between each picture. You can also type in text between the lines of code if you wish to identify each piece separately.

Trying to figure out how to post a photo by using the tree icon, but must I make an entire album "public" to share it via this method?

Ok, with photobucket and album set to "private", I was able to get the frog pic to show up in the "insert" box, but the blue question mark appeared in the post.

What am I doing wrong?

Is photobucker no longer a viable option for this here?

The tree won`t work for me either, no matter what method I use. I click and copy the HTML line then post here and click the HTML next to the tree and paste my code. But its still easier to use the Paperclip direct from your PC. Photobucket

Thank you so much for responding Davey, that worked.

LOL, I never even noticed the "html" icon there.

I see the horrid low resolution of my 400 pixel wide insertion.

Like everything else done, these "improvements" are confusing downgrades. Eb's been jumping the shark for years..

how do you resize it? It's either too big or too small. How do I get a size in between?

If you are using HTML, then the size of the picture will depend on the size of the picture who's URL you are using.  Resize in whatever photo hosting program you are using or on your computer before uploading to the photo host program.  Anything over 600 pixels wide will be cropped on the right hand side though.
