Re: What would these types of old Nativity animals w/ wood legs be called?

They probably are composite over wood. My WAG would be 1930-50's German or Italian.

Thanks mebop, I checked under Composition Cow and did find one kind of similar but it said Putz in the title. I have seen this a lot with vintage Christmas items which is mainly what I sell but I never know when to use that word. I know the putz mica houses but other than that what does it mean? I googled it and believe me the definition had nothing to do with Christmas! Thanks again!

If you mean Putz, it's probably the name of the company. Composition materials can be made of lots of different things. I think these types are probably wood pulp with a hardening/stiffening agent. Here's the definition I think you were looking for:

I think these are more commonly called papier mache' nativity figures. Many of the earlier ones were from Germany. A quick search on ebay seems to suggest that the preferred way of listing is Paper Mache.

Here's the explanation of the German Christmas putzen, or putz, that you were looking for:

Just so this discussion is complete, educationally-speaking, Putz is a common Yiddish expression with a few meanings, one being a slang reference to a part of the male anatomy, but also meaning "fool" or "idiot" as determined by context.

I just coudn't pass up a chance to teach, y'know how it is.

*************** What follows is sig line*************
I collect fine cannon models (patent, arsenal, salesman, maker's, presentation), mug-type brass/copper gunpowder measures, artillery sights/quadrants/shot gauges, cannon firing flintlocks, percussion locks, early artillery books, manuscripts, artillery projectiles, original cannon barrels, etc.

definitely not yiddish in these circumstances, but hey who knows, perhaps they started to worship jaysus when they reached the land of milk and honey...

Putz is decoration in its widest meaning, from plastering on walls to women's headdress.

the use of putz for idiot may come from the original northern german use of the word for trolls, poltergeister etc.

"I googled it and believe me the definition had nothing to do with Christmas!" - *Christmas*past

ROTFL - I had the same experience years ago, *Christmas*past. Never look anything up in Urban Dictionary unless you are prepared to be shocked!

Thanks Taupou for the link that explains the word origin.

Hi Sue and Wendy,
During WWll here in the US you did not say sauerkraut it was referred to as Victory Cabbage. We had a social hall it was called the GBU which was Short for German Beneficial Union during the war it was changed to Greater Beneficial Union still the GBU but more patriotic
