2 prints from France, Got questions

Nov 6, 2009 10:10 AM
I picked these upa t a garage sale. I just thought they were charming...especially for a buck!
I'm guessing these were tourist pieces.....?
Are they copies of some original work?
The back has paper glued to it so I didn't want to remove it. Says "purchased in France 1974." as you can see. There is a tiny number at the bottom right of each pic. What is that number? Series Number?

Any suggestions how to describe these in a listing?
Thanks you for your help!

Did you give measurements? I think these are pages from a book--I can't tell if it's meant to illustrate regional costumes or if it's a childrens grammar text. The words under the illustrations are kind of odd, though--even in French.

These are modern reproductions of very typical 18th C. French or British "occupation" prints.

The numbers are most likely their numbers in the original series of prints.

In such series' there might be depicted many occupations, often street vendors, in their costumes displaying their wares with a title or line or two of descrptive text at the bottom..

Here there is a goose fat vendor and a strawberry vendor.

Goose fat is still regularly sold in France.

Saw your other post.
Thank You
The outside edge dimensions are 8.5" x 5.75".
Didn't think of them being pages. So those numbers on the bttom right are page numbers?

I thought what was written on the back is the translation of what is printed on the front??????

Should I peel the paper off the back?

Yes. I at first interpreted the transcription to mean a seller of goose fat, but it may instead mean a seller of fat geese.
