Do you think it is possible that John Sonsini painted this when he was 17?

Jun 25, 2009 5:23 PM
oil or acrylic on canvas...It is signed John Sonsini '67...I can't find any but his most recent works and have not been able to find out what his signature looks like...He was born in 1950 so he would have had to have been 17 if he painted this...Does anyone know of a resource I may be missing in trying to research this...it is an awesome piece...Faces and tribal masks? very muted colors and you don't notice all the faces until you get up close...anyway and help would be greatly appreciated...or even off the cuff opinions...tia

The writer, Jeremy Sigler, is making comparisons between racist thinking (from that point of view) vs. what the paintings actually are.
I don't believe Sonsini's work is being called racist.

Art*bird,
I didn't find a mention of Neel in the link's article.
They are or have been represented by that same gallery. Is she responsible for Sonsini being there?
I do see his work is compared to hers and others like them. What debt does Sonsini owe?

Yes, that is what I feel the article is partly saying.

I may have stepped over a line when it comes to personal privacy sorry folks...I will report the artist is very happy to confirm that he painted this when he was 17
and sold it at a street art fair

I don't know if his work even resembles Alice Neel...to me it is a stretch...

It is obvious he had talent at the young age of 17 ...Who knows who influenced him...

For that matter you could say we owe allot to life ...because lifes experiences influences us all as well

Art*bird,

Thank you for posting about Alice Neel.
I don't recall her work.
I ask because it isn't clear if Neel directly helped Sonsini or
you are saying he is influence by her.

Check out Ivan Allbright
Link

His painting,

Link

"Into the World There Came a Soul Named Ida"
reminds me of Sonsini's work, the rawness and critique of the human condition.

Yes I am familiar with Ivan Allbright

Shocking to many

at first look the flesh seems rotting then next look wildly prismatic

purely erotic in a paint way

I mean the colors are just so beautiful

FC, Alice Neel stayed true to her vision when the only vision believed true was abstract expressionism

Figurative work was looked upon as tired

There are many women artists similar generation and slightly younger than Alice Neel who never got the hip endorsement ever

Today there are many younger than Alice dudes who do get the hip endorsement

another of the older females is Yvonne Jacquette and there are many many many young dudes who follow Jacquette and win the hip endorsement denied to earlier artists who just happened to be female-- and the denial is/was gender based on bias
