Do you think it is possible that John Sonsini painted this when he was 17?

Jun 25, 2009 5:23 PM
oil or acrylic on canvas...It is signed John Sonsini '67...I can't find any but his most recent works and have not been able to find out what his signature looks like...He was born in 1950 so he would have had to have been 17 if he painted this...Does anyone know of a resource I may be missing in trying to research this...it is an awesome piece...Faces and tribal masks? very muted colors and you don't notice all the faces until you get up close...anyway and help would be greatly appreciated...or even off the cuff opinions...tia

Allbright (1897-1983), and Neel (1900-1984) are contemporaries.
I see more of Allbright in Sonsini's work than
I do Neel's work.
I understand now that for Neel time and place with the feminist movement makes her rep more of a maverick than Allbright.

The images posted in the original post are very accomplished and yes FC-- nothing like Alice Neel--- I was saying contemporary mature work of Sonsini is like Alice Neel

as for is the early Sonsini anything like Albright? my answer is not much

The early Sonsini is beautiful IMO and the color crimson appears both in the Sonsini aged 17 and in the works of Albright?

when painting with full palette prismatically everyone has crimson in their art--- at the least in mixes

Neel was 70 in 1970

her heyday was closer to the Sufragettes than what would be called Feminist movent

heyday is wrong word since she was alive and kicking as late as 1981--- the last time I met her and she was painting too

nite-nite:) from Sarah

Art*bird,

I thought you were talking about Sonsini as an artist owes a lot to Neel. I thought the two artists might have know each other, Neel mentored Sonsini or something like that.
I agree the Sonsini painting posted here isn't like Allbright.
For Sonsini's work today, what he is most known for reminds me more of Allbright than Neel.

It would be great if Sonsini would post here.
There may be artists he was more inspired or not by.

tee hee that phrase is not in the article bird...I was just trying to figure out what the author might have been trying to say...I was really just being flippant... I did figure out that the author was not saying that Sonsini (is/ was racist)...just clarifying that
