Thanks for posting, but some of that info/advice is totally slanted:

"Do you think the fees are too high in comparison to the service you receive?

ebay's fees have become frighteningly high;$40 per featured listing, free shipping (required by ebay for favored search placement), high final value fees, and of course, Paypals cut.

So by the end, on a painting that sells for $100, we actually get to keep about $25 to cover our time and materials. That amounts to less than minimum wage

-----

In actuality, a painter can sell hundred dollar paintings without spending $75.00 to do so here.

I would consider the source and somebody that doesn't want to be ID'd is not worth the time and effort nor does it lend credibilty, for all we know this guy is got so much red ink on his propoerted 900 sales, that he/she is self inflicted demise, for everyone that leaves there are a thousand others waiting to take their place, how do you buy art on E-Bay??

thank for noticing the obvious there will always be that 10%, and if you spend 75% of your asking price to sell your art then on a personel level I would also throw in the towel and call it a day. But the whole thing is staged and slanted for we all know are obvious discontent with those that cannot demand their asking price, in other words the market forces (buyers) have reject the item as being not worth it or over priced or both , buyers are baseball card collectors and the majority of the verbalized complaints are from that group it seems, certainly when I look at the completed listing the ones that have sold this appears to be the case, rather then trying a new approach artists get stuck, they platue out and never really examine the core problems of their inability to sell their works, that is too bad, but if you are going to be self representing artist you need to also be able to effective manage your skills as a bussines and have realistic goals not some fantasy of being the next rave of the art world which seems to change every few months.

Good article Marie. I know the top artists have been paying outrageous fees to "work the ebay platform". They can't operate any other way. I see taking away feature plus and just leaving feature first is going to damage a lot of their business - so I can well understand the complaints.

One gets what one pays for there are no free rides, did you think that it was never going to end, the blame can be placed directly on Meg, somebody is got to pay for the perks she walked with, you are experiencing the tail end of a failed management policy , and now she wants to be govanor of Califorina, that's like being queen of England.

what was so good about it , it said nothing new but merely echoed because the words are hollow, the change is going to occur like it or not, you can close your account if you do not agree with the new rules, but rather why not look how you can use the new rules to your advantage rather then complain about something that is beyond your control on decisions that have already been made, if you don't you will be certain to lose in the end, there is a whole new world out there of potential customers the longer you hestitate to further behind the eight ball you get.

Wow this thread has been severely infested already huh?

Looks like swiss cheese. full of holes!

Great blog posting. I think you're right about the costs. Sure you could list cheaper but sell much less, to make a living at it will take a miracle either way.

Wait until the Featured Artists learn that they will be paying for featured listings which will only be shown in one sort: best match

The new featured first will only be shown while a customer is browsing best match, any other sort like ending soonest, distance price, ect.
(the ones buyers actually use that don't stink) will not be showing the featured first listings like they do now.

Would you pay 25 dollars to only show in best match search?
Buyers can't stand best match which is the reason most buyers vamoosed the caboose!

Surprised that nobody knows about this. I think ebay did a good job of camouflaging it.

Featured First Listings = Will only show in best match sort.

Sorry guys I don't mean to attract the fly but I forgot to add.

The "artists" from the orient will have the 5 best match featured first listings pretty locked up. There are 2 constants up there right now.
Maybe they will change the category to:
Art direct from the assorted working children of Beijing, Hong Kong & China.

The system is easy to game when a best offer of 5 cents can be accepted in a hidden private listing therefore permanently boosting the multiple quantity child labor produced painted item in search and the final value fees on a nickle are very affordable and well worth the added exposure.

I really just hope there is no lead paint used in those things but I'd bet my pinkie toe they aren't painted with quality product.

Apparently when you think it couldn't get any worse you should think again and again. I think someone in charge here has purchased the all you can do to fail miserably and bring everyone down with you guide for dummies.

You would lose the bet that is why they are where they are, and they are successfull so it's obvious that they are doing something that others are not and are succeeding because they are in it for the money and that earns my respect regardless of what you may believe, it all becomes a mute argument.
