How can artists afford free shipping?

Nov 6, 2009 1:09 PM
I am trying to sell again on eBay after being away for a while. The first thing I noticed is the free shipping sellers offer on really large paintings. I have a lot of big paintings I want to sell but it usually ends up costing anywhere between 50 and 120 to ship them. I was wondering if they are getting some kind of discount somewhere?

Considering the dismal sales on Ebay, everybody is trying everything to get noticed. One of those ways is that offering free shipping supposedly gets you higher on the list, closer to the front of the listings. Whether the extra shipping cost is built into the selling price or not... I don't know. Other than that, sellers are choosing to eat the extra cost at a chance to get sales. I, for one, am not about to give Ebay a percentage of my shipping costs on top of their other fees.

Are they shipping them rolled up? I know a lot of the China sellers do. That might explain part of it.

I think many of them are offering at least some of their large paintings with free shipping. Its supposed to get them higher in the listings (but I wouldn't be sure about that) and they are probably using them to draw traffic to the rest of their paintings.

I always wondered, too! But I figure they probably add the cost of shipping into the price, or at least part of it.
