Attention Bentley Little fans!

Sep 25, 2009 11:20 AM
In case you didn't know, he has a new book out called, "His Father's Son".
It's on the way to my local liberry as I write this. :-x

I also came across a book called "Four Dark Nights", which contains a 100(ish) page novella by him called, "The Circle".
It also contains stories by Chistopher Golden, Douglas Clegg and Tom Piccirilli.

Zack, I was just wondering if you would post what you thought of "His Father's Son" if you read it shortly - I have about 3 books ahead of it on my "to read" list. I'm going to read it no matter what, but the reviews on amazon aren't great for it.

Out of curiosity, what is your favorite Little novel? I don't think I can name just one, but my top 5, in no particular order, are:

*Dispatch (reminds me a bit of King's Everything's Eventual short story with Dinky something, can't remember his last name, maybe Earnshaw?)

*The Store (that whole father/daughter thing was pretty disturbing)

*The Association (Stumpy!! Nice character there)

*University

*The Ignored

Even the books I'm not crazy about I still enjoy, he's one of those writers that I will read anything by. IMO he's not great with endings but I love the weirdness in his stuff. Maybe that's why I like his short stories even better than his novels.

Yes, master.

what is your favorite Little novel?

The Revelation.

The Store (that whole father/daughter thing was pretty disturbing)

Yeah, I could have done without that.
I didn't like the last 30 or 40 pages of the book.
Once the main character went to work for the Store, it just seemed to me like Little didn't know where to go with the book at that point.

The images of the dead walking (especially the one walking & walking & walking underwater) in (what else?) The Walking, always creeps me out.
Plus, I found the back story in that one as interesting (if not more so) than the main story.

Even the books I'm not crazy about I still enjoy, he's one of those writers that I will read anything by.

Me too.

he's not great with endings

Most endings don't really satisfy while building up to it in my head, so it's a good thing I just enjoy the ride to it, otherwise I may as well quit reading fiction. :^O

but I love the weirdness in his stuff

His "The Circle" is like that.
The ending didn't do much for me, but it has its weird moments.

Maybe that's why I like his short stories even better than his novels

My favorite ss of his is "The Washintonians".

Read His Father's Son, and was very disappointed.
It bored me to tears.

I mostly agree.

I finally read it about a week or so ago, and I think it was the least entertaining thing he's ever written. It didn't have the same feel to it as his usual stuff. The plot was pretty thin, it was just ok and I wouldn't recommend it. I don't want to give anything away b/c it's all pretty dependent on one main story point.

It did take me a little while to figure out what the short stories in the main story had to do with anything, but I was very disappointed with it.

Yeah, took me some time to figure out the stories too. They were probably the best part.

They were probably the best part.

And what does that say about the rest of the book? :^O

So I finally got ahold of The Circle, I started it today, and it is WAY better than the Father's Son book. It feels more like classic Bentley Little to me. I was laughing like a fool at the first part with the little boy and his unusual creations of jewels, it was pretty funny in that sick Little way. That's why I love BL - he is so off the wall. Zack, thanks for the rec!

I like the other authors in the book ok - hopefully the whole book will be good.
