The Catcher in the Rye, when I was an angust ridden youth...I grew up in the 80's-90's, but that book really spoke to me then. Its still a sentimental fav, but I wouldn't say it 'speaks' so loudly to me anymore. Same with The Bell Jar, by S. Plath...:^O

I also just finished an intro to Philosophy class, and while I feel I may be a bit too riid in my thoughts to truly 'get' and/or embrace it fully,My Ishmel. I was floored by the concept that we accept that our food is under lock and key, and that we must work as individuals for it, rather then work together and all share it in (as in a tribe)...

Not a book initially but the film Fight Club which inspired me to read the book which eventually got me back into reading.Enjoying reading again has changed my life, provided more pleasure .Thank God for Palahniuk and Bukowski. The Road Less Travelled probably opened my eyes too.I guess it has all been for the best, but as Bukowski would say everything is escapeism.

I would have to say the "rich dad-poor dad"books have definatly changed my life , for the better. They give you a more realistic view of the way finaces are actually conducted and point you in the direction of weath accumulation. The books themselves are not that great, but some of the concepts are.But like any other information you have to 'do it' to gain any benifit.

As long as you don't take the book at a literal level The Celestine Prophesy has some very great ideas about human relationships with eacother and the earth. Very interesting concepts.

This isn't exactly one book, and it's kind of a dorky story. But, I'm a dork!

When I was about 13, I was given a T-Shirt that said "Celebrate Freedom Read a Banned Book" It listed by title and author 10 books that had been banned somewhere in the US in the last ten years.

I decided to read them. The first one I read was "Of Mice and Men". I know it's considered a short story. Also on the list were "The Great Gatsby", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Huckleberry Finn", and many many more. I read them all that summer.

I was always an advanced reader. At 12 (6th grade), my favorite authors were Stephen King, V.C. Andrews, and James Alexander Thom. All the other girls my age were reading the "Sweet Valley High" books.

Well, reading these banned books, none of which had been banned in my state, opened my eyes to a whole new class of literature. It really gave me a taste for the classics. After I read the books on my T-Shirt, I hit the rest of the books in the classic section of my small library. Dickens, more Twain, Shakespeare, Dumas and more.

what a truly beautiful post!

Often thought about folks, who initial response to stuff they don't understand is to try and bury it.

Thinking that all through our history on earth, folks who try to control others find their first instinct is to stop the sharing of ideas and thoughts, and it doesn't seem to matter whether it's done by a number of desperate ways.

They try to silence folks, by stopping them from speaking, from reading, from writing, from owning the tools of communication, and any all the ways folks have to grow and change.

And, it's always fear, that motivates them.

Fear of what is perceived to be different.

Fear of what is perceived to be a threat to their control.

Fear of what is perceived to be a change in the status quo.

And, maybe most fearful to these folks, be they despots, dictators, or just regular folks, is the complete fear of the unknown.

My only interest is in the book discussion - I meant how you found the book after reading it ... I'm not looking for anything else. Sorry if I gave you the wrong idea.

There is a lot of books that touch me deeply, and made some difference in my way of thinking, more than in way of living, but it is good and for good. Neverending Story Michael Ende Jonathan Livingston Seagull Richard Bach I saw someone already wrote this one. The Alchemist By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept Manual of the Warior of Light Paulo Coelho everything about DiscWorld Tarry Pratchet The Wheel of Time Series Robert Jordan And my sister thinks that everyone shoul read Tolkien, and she is very much right.
