Restaurant Corner - A Discussion Thread for restaurant owners and Equip. Sellers

Aug 5, 2003 2:40 PM
Hello Restaurant folks!

EBay is one of the largest online resources for restaurant supplies and equipment, so I thought it’d be fun to spark some community discussion for all the restaurant owners, operators, and equipment sellers. Some ideas for topics could include starting a restaurant, operational strategies, marketing concepts, menu and recipe ideas, buying and selling equipment on eBay, etc, etc…

I’ll start the discussion with some fun facts about eBay’s Restaurant category – did you know…
1) EBay’s restaurant marketplace is running at about $40 million of equipment sold annually and is growing at close to 100% per year.
2) There are over 60 categories of restaurant items to choose from.
3) Over 4,500 pieces of restaurant equipment sell every week.
4) Over 27 pieces of restaurant equipment sell every hour of every day.
5) On a typical day, over 250 pieces of Hobart equipment can be found on the site.
6) About 21 vending machines sell each day.
7) A Bar & Beverage related item sells every 3 minutes.

Looking forward to chatting…

Cheers

-John

I am interested in opening a resturaunt and wouldn't mind knowing what I should consider before plunging head first into a business I know nothing about. Are there classes I can take? People to talk to? What would you tell a person that is new to the business besides "Run away as fast as you can!"?

Opening a restaurant is just like opening any business. You need to do thorough research and develop a formal business plan with projections out at least 5 years. Have funds available to support the restaurant for at least the first year.

Many colleges have continuing education classes about opening restaurants -- look at some local schools.

And always remember the three most important things -- location, location, location

Good Luck

Most states will require some sort of food handler or food safety certificate as well ( and even if they don't --- you should get one, poor food safety can get you closed by your local health department )

It's a fun business but might be more stressful than you might anticipate --- if you know anyone that owns a restaurant - ask them if you can visit for a whole day or most of one and try to go during their busiest hours.

Training of employees is critical so if you cant do it yourself, hire the best you can get to do it for you.

eBay does have some good deals on equipment --- try and find some local eBayers to save freight or postage.

Hey! Thanks for the replies! I appreciate it. This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have a whole sketch book full of plans, ideas, projections, etc... It isn't much but it is a start! Will check in periodically. BTW it is a Themed restaraunt and it would be in a great area. I pass by the spot every once in awhile and wave at the future "hot spot"! =0}

I want to add a note here. My company sells restaurant 'smallwares' - pots, pans, forks, knives, bakeryware, etc. I have awesome prices and would be in a GREAT position to supply restaurant owners who were looking to start up, or even that need stuff from time to time. I have an eBay store, sell stuff on auctions, as well as other options to sell kitchenware. What I am curious to know is how I can target you that are starting a restaurant to see if I can supply you with kitchen products? Is there somewhere that this type of person looks at first for product needs?

Thanks!

Mike

Ramkitchen,

Without committing fee avoidance, the best way to get your target customers to see your products is to post auctions, either fixed price or bidding formats. If you post enough auctions, the customer sill see you.

You can also participate in eBay's marketing programs such as the keyword program, the affiliate program or
co-op advertising. They all get your name in front of more potential customers.

However, asking customers to contact you directly for equipment you are not listing is 'fee avoidance' and eBay will react to that type of activity.

I have found that eBay's auction platform allows plenty of opportunity to merchandise your products and to build brand awareness without trying to get buyers to circumvent eBay.

Good luck!

Hello everyone. I just finished my basement complete with a bar. I had one question and think I found the place to have it answered. I'm trying to replicate a multiple beer tap on my bar. What is the mechanism that the taps screw into? Is that called a tap machine? I'm not looking for one to work just strictly for show. If anyone knows the answer to this question, I'd greatly appreciate your response and if anyone is selling one in good condition, I'm in the market. Thanks..

Restaurateurs, I'm sure some of you have seen Restaurant.com or have noticed their auctions on eBay. What do you guys think about the program in general? Do you like the idea of bartering marketing and advertising this way or do you think cash is the only way to go?

SCORE has much info available for starting a restaurant and its free. Go to www.sba.gov and start from there. Or go to www.yourhomeinportlandoregon and click on resources and view my online business resources. Restaurants are tough. If you can start a successful restaurant, you can run just about any business. Good luck.
