Canada to US... taking forever!

Nov 4, 2009 2:17 PM
Here's the computer I won on October 8: Link

Normally I wouldn't be so impatient but I'm leaving the country before thanksgiving and I need to take this macbook with me. It was mailed Canada Post and the tracking status has been stuck on "Has entered the US." I asked the seller to look into it and this is the response I got:

"First I want to thank you for your patience, I have contacted
Canada Post about status on this package they told me they only
are showing last information available when the package was
scanned in transit - because of this they are recommending to
put trace only if I am certain package could have been lost
during transit - I also have asked what option do I have and told
me to wait once more since Priority Mail International Parcels
waiting time varies from 2 to 5 weeks. I am not sure why this
long waiting since it is Priority Service also the package has
entered US already however I suggest to give this another 2
week before I am submitting a trace claim. Hope to hear from
you soon with good news. Happy Halloween !"

Do I have any other choice but to wait? Is there any way I could be refunded so I can buy another before I leave the US? What would you do in my situation?

Thanks in advance.

"Do I have any other choice but to wait? Is there any way I could be refunded so I can buy another before I leave the US?"

This would be very unwise, as it would tie the money up in a Paypal dispute for a minimum of 30 days.

As long as it still shows in transit, Paypal will give it extra time for it to arrive (International) Canada to USA.

Forget my first post after looking at the auction.:(

Your seller is new (under 100 Feedback) for selling, your payment WAS being held by Paypal for safe keeping for 21 days, until the seller proves with tracking the item was delivered, OR you leave Positive Feedback or the 21 days expired. The hold has now expired:_|

Once the funds are released to the seller and the item still has not arrived, you may want to file as early as possible.;)

When did you pay for the item and by what method?

If paid on the same day Oct 8 the auction ended it will be 30 days on Sunday Nov 8.

While it can take extra time USPS International Priority to arrive, I would think it should have arrived within 30 days.

In this case I would file the INR(Item not received) Now.

You only have a total of 45 days from the date of payment to file with Paypal.

Waiting in this case may not be the best idea.

It entered the USA according to the tracking, but if USPS can't give more info, it could be held up in US customs for some reason.

Have you tried asking USPS (your local Post Office) to run the tracking number/ or Customs # thru their system? If not, do that now and file with Paypal.

I would not refuse the package, if it arrives.

File with Paypal , check with your local PO and go from there.

While I understand your time constaints, it is not really relevent.

I would not wait to file with Paypal on this one.

Once you file, DO NOT cancel the dispute/claim , unless you have received the item in the condition as described in the auction.

Once you cancel a Paypal claim, it can not be re opened.

Once you file with Paypal, all communication with the seller should be via the dispute console only.

Did you get the other Mac you also purchased on Oct 8 ? Hopefully you can use that one to stay in touch with Paypal, while away.

Just to clarify, I misread your last sentence " Do I have any other choice but to wait? Is there any way I could be refunded so I can buy another before I leave the US?"

Please forgive me and ignore my post #1.

Yes I would file now, but it is unlikely the refund will be prior to your departure for the holiday.

It is possible, not guaranteed.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Now, should I immediately elevate this to a claim, or give the seller time to respond? Is it unreasonable to ask the seller to refund my purchase even though the item is still "somewhere" in transit?

I don't think you should be filing an INR this early in the game. Your seller seems to be on top of things and is actively trying to find out information about your package. The tracking shows the package in transit - it is not lost yet, just delayed.

I can certainly sympathize with your need to get it before Thanksgiving, but you still have plenty of time until then. You still have time until the 45-day deadline for filing a dispute.

International packages CAN take this long to arrive and still get there just fine. Insurance companies won't even generally pay out on an international package until it's been missing for at least 45 days, sometimes more. I had a package take almost a month to get to Canada from the U.S., and I had a seller send me a package from the U.K. that arrived a full month after the postmarked date. These were both air mail, BTW.

It isn't fair to penalize a concerned and helpful seller by jumping the gun on an INR when a package is being tracked and is still showing up in transit, no matter how quickly you need it. That isn't the seller's fault. Give it a little longer, don't let the 45-day deadline pass (if it were me, I'd put a reminder on my calendar to file on day 44), and never buy anything internationally that will be problematic if it's delayed for 6-8 weeks.

It's likely your Mac is in US Customs. IT isn't the sellers fault nor can Canada Post do much about it either.
You could file for item not received but you won't get your moeny back from Paypal anytime soon.

Well, it seems like I should file a paypal dispute just to be on the safe side... yeah this seller seems like a nice honest guy, but I don't want to end up with nothing.

The only thing you'll accomplish by filing it now vs. on day 44 is to create an adversarial relationship with someone who's been willing to help you so far. There isn't any benefit to it that I can think of.
