Seller is waaay overcharging me for shipping.

Nov 6, 2009 12:58 AM
I bid and won 13 seperate items from a seller last week. He said in his descriptions that he combined shipments. I had his ZIP code and knew the approximate weight of what I was buying so figured I had a rough idea of what the actual shipping charges were going to be (around $50), I also had no problem if he wanted to pop in $5 or $10 extra for handling. I get the bill though and he is trying to charge $97.12. This is not the total of the shipping charges listed in the individual auctions, so he didn't just goof and forget to combine. He's combining 13 items into two boxes that will ship for around $50 total and he;s only giving about $15 off what it would be if he mailed all 13 boxes seperate.

So far I have e-mailed the seller 5 days in a row simply asking him how many boxes he was mailing me and how much each box weighed. I have not yet said anything else or expressed any displeasure. He has not responded.

Will Ebay doink me with a non paying bidder over this? (doesn't matter, I will take it rather than hand this guy $50 free). Do they expect me to pay no matter what kind of outrageous charges he tries to drop on me? I say he is screwing Ebay out of revenue with the shipping charges, every auction he has lists charges that are about double the actual costs, now he is going for $50 all at once.

;)
Never presume the seller is going to discount s/h to what you think IT should be,
Always ASK FIRST, before making multiple bids/purchases.
IT would seem if the seller said in description that they would combine and ship at a discount rate, they will as soon as you pay. According even to you he did invoice you at what you think is a discounted rate. (he;s only giving about $15 off)

So far I have e-mailed the seller 5 days in a row...He has not responded.
;) ;)
I suspect that is not all that was asked. Thus the 1 possible reason for no reply from seller.
Will Ebay doink me with a non paying bidder over this?
IT is entirely possible, IF the seller pushes the NON-payment issue.

Do they expect me to pay no matter what kind of outrageous charges he tries to drop on me?
No. IF the seller was charging you the same or more than stated as a combined rate, that might be outrageous. You said IT was invoiced $15 cheaper. How is that outrageous?

I say he is screwing Ebay out of revenue IT would be YOU skewing ebay/paypal out of any fees.

Never bid on any auction , where you do not have a firm quote for S&H (combined or otherwise) Prior to bidding.

What are the auction numbers?

Nothing showed on your bid history for this user ID as won last week.

Did Ebay pull the auctions?

Will Ebay doink me with a non paying bidder over this? You may get doinked with 13 UID's over it, one or two might not hurt you, 13 could restrict your buying and selling ability, and WILL prevent you from being able to be on alot of peoples auctions since they can restrict their auctions to people with more than 2 UID's in a year.

If he just said he combined auction shipments and he ships them together he has followed his tos.
If he said he offers a discount for multiple wins shipping together but did not state what the discount will be it is on you to ask before bidding. He took $15 off so he is offering you a discount just not as big as you assumed. You assumed you knew what the shipping would be and you were wrong(never good to assume-better to ask)
Sellers are not required to offer discounted shipping just for combining.

OP, can I see an auction #? We might catch something in his TOS that you've missed that could help you.

I think you are all nuts.

and we aren't the one who agreed to the costs by bidding without asking about the costs first.

maybe you should just pay the seller as they did lower the shipping as stated by you.

We may walk a different path , but may be headed to the same place. So walk with me awhile when our paths cross. let's ease each other's load.

OK.

I think it's "nuts" to enter into a business agreement without understanding how much it will cost you, try to re-negotiate the deal, refuse to live up to your end of the deal, and think that you should be able to do this without penalty.

I also think it's "nuts" to believe that the seller should have to tell you the shipping details (weight, etc.) just because you "demand" it and want to use it as leverage to force him to change the deal.

Enjoy your unpaid item strikes.

That sums it up pretty well. Couldn't have said it better!

He said in his descriptions that he combined shipments.

Combined shipments doesn't mean the seller will give you a combined shipping DISCOUNT.

We really would like to see the auctions to see what the seller has advertised.

Whats nuts is not getting a firm combined shipping price before bidding.Asking for number of boxes and weight AFTER you win is pointless-you agreed to pay whatever the seller decided to charge when you bid without said shipping price
Would I do the same if I were the seller(I cahrge actuall shipping based on weight/size of box) -no -but it is his business and he is free to run it as he pleases within ebays guideline.

OK, so you know he's combined shipping as you say he is shipping 2 boxes instead of 13. And above you state he discounted shipping by $15 from what the total postage of 13 boxes would have cost.

Sounds like combined and discounted shipping to me. Just not as much a discount as you would like.

Since you didn't receive a shipping quote prior to buying all the items and you admit you only "estimated" on your own what the combined cost would be, you have no reason for complaint.

I will agree with you so far as I would not be happy to hand him a 49 dollar "packing fee" either. However, I do agree with the majority opinion here that the time to work out shipping costs and discounts is before you buy. I have some interest in doll clothes. The doll is about 5 inches tall so her clothes are very small and light. There is a seller who has lots of individual items for sale seperately for decent prices but the shipping per item would be outrageous (in my opinion anyway) I have asked and been told, I will combine. I asked if she discounts and was told combining would be the discount and she will not give me any idea of the shipping price if combined. I did not buy. If I don't know the cost, I don't buy. That was where you made your mistake.

I am sorry you have had to learn this lesson the hard way, but you do have the responsiblility to pay now that you have bought.
