OT: My cell phone just died! Where is my Obama phone?

I had a former employee call me earlier today inquiring about a job, and at the end of the conversation he gave me his phone number. I asked the former employee if this was a new cell phone number and he told me yes this was his "Obama phone." I asked him what an "Obama phone" was and he went on to say that welfare recipients are now eligible to receive (1) a FREE new phone and (2) approx 70 minutes of FREE minutes every month. I was a little skeptical so I Googled it and low and behold he was telling the truth. TAX PAYER MONEY IS BEING REDISTRIBUTED TO WELFARE RECIPIENTS FOR FREE CELL PHONES. This program was started earlier this year. Enough is enough, the ship is sinking and it's sinking fast. The very foundations that this country was built on are being shaken. The age old concepts of God, family, and hard work have flown out the window and are being replaced with "Hope and Change" and "Change we can believe in." Google a bit harder if you are interested in facts and not propaganda.

Sounds like obama got the credit for it and I am sure BO is loving every dependent that is leeching on. This is the first I have heard of this program so I do think it is an Obama phone.

In my opinion it doesn't matter who started it. It's ridiculous. Cell phones are not necessities and taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for them!

In my opinion it doesn't matter who started it. It's ridiculous. Cell phones are not necessities and taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for them!

Absolutely agree, you can give the whole safety speech but people live/lived just fine without cell phones. What will they think of next? Give everyone a car or a gas card each month. Please

Are you serious? I link to actual facts about who started this program and when, but you are just going to "go with your gut" on this one? Wow, ignorance at it's finest.

I see commercials on TV for these phones all the time. Not just welfare recipients but low income people period.

Well, I went 50+ years without a cell phone. I had flat tires, collisions, ran out of gas, kept up with my kids, took driving vacations in excess of 3,000 mile round trips, and kept up with current events, and, believe it or not, I did it all without a cell phone.

Cell phones are a luxury, in many cases a ridiculous luxury (6 & 7 yo's with phones).

This program has been going on for years. However, google Obama cell phones and you get snopes and every other web site with big honking eagles on it.


Welfare recipients have always had some sort of free phone service for a very long time. This program is decades old in one form or another, mainly to guarantee access to phones in case of an emergency. Since most welfare recipients are only on welfare for 2 years or less, that means that they are looking for jobs and you need a phone for a job.

The reason for the switch to Trac Phone is that they are giving a better rate to the government than the baby Bells and it isn't 70 minutes.

the lifeline program itself has been around for quite some time .. back when I worked for a phone company it was only landlines .. but still free service


could we call that bush phone


what if it goes back to Regan? :O

even if it does I would like to call it "Bush phone" much more comical

you do know that at least in California they disabled all the freeway call boxes and pay phones are few and far between

so if you're a woman stranded alone on the freeway with an infant, feel free to flag down a random stranger :|

I've been getting $10 off my phone bill since Clinton was in office.Currently,I'm using the money I save to print my manifesto.Previously,I was donating it to programs that support teenaged immigrant mothers on drugs.

Can we blame Al Gore?
