Nope, it's ridiculous.

If you are seeing it here spelled with an "e", it's just a misspelling :)

No, it is not rediculous. I hate that particular mistake, and I think spelling quality levels have gone down. Spell check is a pretty useful tool, is what I always tell my daughters. (who have pretty atrocious spelling sometimes)

Thanks for clearing that up! I can see where it's coming from with the pronounciation of the first syllable being re. Because American spelling is sometimes different to English, like the omission of the u (color - colour), it wouldn't have surprised me.

Some people just can't spell. My husband and 2 of my sons can't spell if their life depended on it. They are all Engineers and sometime spell check doesn't help...

I agree, Bambini, and bad spelling really annoys me, especially on business signs and in school newsletters (yes, it happens!). I have one dd who is an excellent speller without even trying and one who is atrocious...she's 6, so that's part of her excuse, but also, she never, ever wants any help spelling, it's all purely phonetic. First grade spelling tests are a struggle because she already *thinks* she knows how to spell everything. ;)

Oh no! I have always thought it was "rediculous". LOL. I guess because that's how I pronounce it, I had no idea I was spelling it wrong! I thought I was a pretty good speller, too. Geesh. Sorry, peeps! :^O :8}

I love how much I learn on this board. ♥

The problem is manifold, it has to do with the many origins of words we use in America, so there are no spelling 'rules' that apply across the board. It really has to be learned. The only one I can think of that might be universal is the "i before e, except after c" rule.
Also the amound of like words that mean different things, English can be a minefield linguistically.

Agreed, it is really difficult to "teach" spelling, other than just to have kids memorize each word in the English language. There are so many "rules" that are only rules part of the time. My ds4 is learning to read and write and he will ask me how to spell things before he writes them, but dd6 never would. She was too independent and never wanted help. Just different kids!

bambini, I took courses in the history of English language in college. Some of the absolute best information I've ever learned! It's made me a better writer, reader, speller, and I even picked up some useful history and literature tidbits. ;) It's amazing how a language can change so drastically in such a short period of time, yet when you know the history it all makes perfect sense.

I took an etymology class in high school and I believe it really helped me with both spelling and vocabulary. My dd9 is learning Greek and Latin roots as well in her 4th grade class, and I think it's fabulous. I think some sort of training in root meanings, etc., would really help kids with their grasp of the English language on many levels. It should be mandatory.

If you think it's bad now, just wait until the text messaging-generation reaches maturity.

I make enough typos that they don't usually bother me, but one that does is people who type loose instead of lose. I don't see it here very often, but on some of the other boards I frequent it is becoming the norm. I don't think it is just a matter of a typo, either, because the ones who bother me use it consistently in reference to things like losing a bet or losing weight. Grrrr....
